Rangers v Newcastle – Pre-season match preview.

Newcastle play their last scheduled game of pre-season at Ibrox tomorrow lunchtime as they go toe-to-toe with Glasgow Rangers.
There is a possibility of fitting in an extra game in midweek because of our opening game now being played on a Monday evening, although as yet there is nothing to report on that one.
So as it stands, this is the last chance for the squad to get a semi-competitive run out before they knuckle down for that last bit of training.
A positive result tomorrow would be nice to go along with our enthusing performance against Deportivo the other night and our spirited fightback against PSV last Saturday, but any result will have to be worked for as Rangers won’t give anything away cheaply.
Newcastle have no new injury or fitness concerns ahead of the match and will only be missing Tamas Kadar, Sol Campbell, Steven Taylor and Danny Simpson from the squad tomorrow. Sol may travel with the squad although I suspect he won’t make be making his debut appearance for the club.
Leon Best will be looking to continue his promising pre-season form whilst Peter Lovenkrands will be eager to play on his return to his old stomping ground. Andy Carroll is yet to get off the mark so it would be nice if he could grab a goal to give him a bit of confidence heading in to the new season, whilst whether or not Joey Barton’s moustache gets another run out is a question that is will only be answered tomorrow.
Rangers are suffering a bit of a cash crisis at the moment, which they can hopefully pull through from. As a result of that, summer spending, much like ours, has been restricted. In fact I don’t think they have signed anyone as yet, although I could be wrong on that.
A tough game can be still be expected however as the home side will want to impress in front of what should be a big crowd at Ibrox. Officially, there will be 3,850 fans in the Broomloan Road end although I dare say there is likely to be a few more dotted around in the home end, which should lead to decent atmosphere.
Personally, I want a result tomorrow, although some fans will say that the result isn’t that important as it is only pre-season. Of course we will need to ensure that we don’t suffer any injuries, particularly to key players, but there also needs to be a bit of risk involved in the quest for match sharpness.
In my opinion, this game should be used as a dummy run for the Manchester United game, or certainly a part of it should at least, and a result would give Newcastle that little bit of extra confidence in the run up to Old Trafford.
Howay the lads!
