A fond farewell from Toonsy.

Farewell, but not goodbye.
Farewell, but not goodbye.
It is with extreme sadness that I am announcing my intention to cease writing articles for NUFCBlog.org.

But I just wanted to pen one last article to thank each and every one of you for being so supportive during my writing tenure on this very site. So here goes.

A couple of years ago I only ever used to post comments on blogs and forums and never really thought about getting involved in the writing side of things.

I always thought, never having being the best at creative writing, in fact writing full stop, that I would never be any good at it. I guess that is something that is up to each individuals taste I guess, whether I was any good with writing articles, but I decided to ask and see if I could give it a go, and Workyticket very kindly gave me the opportunity to do so on here.

I’ve made many friends on here and try to get on with everyone, although obviously things get heated from time to time. Still, I caught the bug and enjoyed writing about everything that happened to be going on at our beloved Newcastle United at any given time. Usually there is quite a lot to talk about when it comes to NUFC! (more…)

Wigan v Newcastle – Match preview.

Not a good sight for Newcastle!
Not a good sight for Newcastle!
Newcastle head to Wigan this afternoon in what is shaping up to be a very important game for both sides aspirations of staying in the Premier League this season.

A win for Newcastle will take them to at least 10th, whilst a win for Wigan will see them leapfrog us and will ensure that Newcastle drop down two places in the table, ever closer to that rather ominous Premier League trap door.

Given the way we generally play when we go to Wigan, I have to say that I am not entirely confident about getting a result, although I do live in eternal hope that we can perhaps one day end our run of poor results, and poor performances, that seem to harvest themselves every time the team set foot in Lancashire!

Both teams are missing key men, with the main question being which team will miss their key player the most? Charles N’Zogbia will miss the game for Wigan as he starts his three match ban after being sent off against Arsenal, whist Newcastle look set to be without Andy Carroll after he picked up a thigh strain. Who is going to miss their player the most? I fear it may be us….. (more…)

2010 – A year of relative stability on Tyneside.

2010 - The year in review.
2010 - The year in review.
Well, that is pretty much it for 2010 as the cover begins to close on a relatively stable yearbook for Newcastle United.

Yes, that’s right, this year has been pretty stable for us in comparison to years gone by, although there have been brief moments of turmoil spread throughout the year, just to keep things interesting.

I thought it might be a good idea to look back on the year and recount some of the events that have made us tear our hair out in frustration, brought a smile to our face, made us angry and so on.

Things went pretty smoothly for us in the first quarter of 2010. The January transfer window saw us strengthen the squad and cement our position as league leaders. Results were good, performances were largely good, we were playing some decent stuff and we were hammering some teams, namely Barnsley and Cardiff. (more…)

Carroll injury concern opens the door for Nile Ranger.

Ranger to supply the danger this Sunday?
Ranger to supply the danger this Sunday?
Andy Carroll looks likely to miss the game against Wigan on Sunday, and he could also miss the home game next week against West Ham after picking up a thigh injury.

Undoubtedly it is a huge blow to Newcastle as they face a very important week in the quest for Premier League survival as they come face to face with two teams that are battling it out at the bottom of the league currently, but being realistic there was always a risk that Carroll would pick up an injury at some point.

So now we must prepare to do battle against two teams that we are competing with without our star man. Kevin Nolan will return to the side to at least add some goal-scoring capability, but the main point of all this must be the fact that Nile Ranger will surely get a run out in the first-team in the absence of Carroll.

Many people have clamoured for Ranger to get some decent game time, and with Shola Ameobi still recovering from a hamstring strain, and now with Andy Carroll on the treatment table the time has surely come for our highly-rated youngster to attempt to make his impact on the first team. (more…)
