It looks like Newcastle are set to capture their second signature of the summer as a loan deal for Manchester United’s 20-year old youngster, Tom Cleverley, looks set to be announced imminently
This comes hot on the ‘eels after landing Perch from Nottingham Forest yesterday, and after such a slow start in the market things now appear to be picking up for Newcastle United.
Cleverley signed a new three year contract at Old Trafford not so long ago, so the chances of us being able to sign him on a permanent basis after his anticipated 12-month loan deal expires look to be slim, but on the other hand it does point towards the fact that the Manchester United hierachy must rate the kid enough to offer him a new deal, unless it is a new contract put in place purely to ensure that any bidding club will have to pay top dollar for the central midfielder. Newcastle are apparently interested in bringing Manchester City’s Young Player of the Season, Dedryck Boyota, to St James’ Park on a season long loan deal.
Why, I don’t know, but it is a story that has been doing the rounds for a few days now, and after the stunning revelation about Newcastle in todays Sunday Sun, it could actually be an avenue we end up exploring. I’ll pick holes in the Sunday Stun later on, but for now lets focus on the boy Boyota.
As mentioned earlier, Boyota managed to bag the Man City Young Player of the Season award despite only making seven appearances in the first team. The 19-year-old defender from Brussels seems to have impressed boss Roberto Mancini enough to start putting him into the first team, with perhaps the most notable of his performances coming against Manchester United in the semi-final of the Carling Cup, which does sound promising. Speculation has been rife regarding the acquisition of loan players arriving over the summer to bolster the Newcastle squad for their Premier League return.
Players like Tom Cleverley and Jack Wilshere have been mentioned as possible candidates to make the temporary switch to Tyneside, but is that really the way we should be going?
The thing about them two players is that they both play in a position that is aready equipped to get by in the Premier League, so would we really drop the likes of Kevin Nolan, Danny Guthrie, Joey Barton or Alan Smith in favour of playing a player that will only be with us on a temporary basis? I can’t see it personally, which is why I think the mention of loan deals is being very exaggerated. (more…)
Speculation regarding interest in signing Jack Wilshere has been doing the rounds again today, and Hughton has finally admitted to being interested in securing the services of the highly rated Arsenal youngster.
Which is a confusing one really as I covered the story about Wlishere and a possible loan switch to Tyneside a few weeks back, and whilst it would appear to be a move that would be welcomed by Newcastle fans, Chris Hughton moved quickly to dismiss any interest in the player who spent the back end of last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers. Something must have made Hughton have a change of heart though, especially after what was a very quick dismissal of the kind of player we are crying out for has been followed by this recent admission of interest in bringing the player to the club. Well, it’s the weekend, which obviously means the papers crank up the printing press and churn out that little bit more speculation and gossip.
In spite of that though, it is actually pretty quiet on the Newcastle transfer speculation front today, which is surprising and not what I want to see when I wake up on a Saturday morning.
Ultimately this time of the year always leads to speculation from fans across the country. It’s a little bit different this year due to the World Cup, but the focus of fans of clubs across the country remains on their respective clubs for the time being. One new link today has been regarding Chelsea player Slobodan Rajkovic. The controversial defender has been on loan for three seasons and has spent the majority of that time in Holland, with the pinnacle so far being a league winners medal won last season with Steve McClaren’s FC Twente.
