Carroll and Taylor will be needed next season.
Steven Taylor will be offered a new contract at Newcastle before the pre-season training campaign gets underway in early July, according to The Journal.

Much of the debate that has taken place this summer has been around how much money we have to spend, or indeed if we actually do have any money to spend.

Whilst that is important, there is also another matter of upmost urgency at hand, and that is to make sure we keep hold of the players we already have that can help survive and thrive in the Premier League, players like Steven Taylor and Andy Carroll for example. That is a point reiterated by Chris Hughton today as he moved to quash rumours that two of our local lads, and better players by all accounts, could be on their way out of St James’ Park. (more…)

Carroll and Lovenkrands - The deadly duo?
Carroll and Lovenkrands - The deadly duo?
Well there isn’t much in the way of news as yet today, so I have decided to take a look at just how some of our players may fare in the Premier League next season.

I think it’s widely percieved that the squad at least needs depth added to it, so for a change I wont be looking at what players we may or may not get in, or indeed whether we are going to spend money or not.

What we can have a look at is what we have in the squad right now, and why not start with having a look at our strikers? Andy Carroll and Peter Lovenkrands have been rather impressive throughout the Championship campaign, and the pair of them have forged quite an effective partnership up front for Newcastle scoring 35 goals between them. The big man/little man combination seems to be working, and it’s an understanding that can only get better in my opinion. (more…)

Carroll to Chelsea and Campbell to Toon?

Campbell - Back in the frame for Newcastle?
Campbell - Back in the frame for Newcastle?
Well it is Sunday again, and various news outlets have again failed to disappoint in there outlandish transfer gossip.

Amazingly, none of it regards Steven Taylor, although there is still plenty of time for that to change throughout the day.

One of these pieces of transfer gossip seems to think that Chelsea are lining up a bid for striker, Andy Carroll, whilst the other thinks we are back in the market for Sol Campbell who is again available on a free transfer after his short term contract at Arsenal expire.

Campbell was heavily linked with a move to Tyneside last season after he walked out on Notts County. He was spotted at the ground at everything and apparently told people he was all set to join Newcastle. In the end he didn’t, and when his old club Arsenal came calling he scurried off back down South, although I will admit that he did play some blinders last season, to the surprise of a few who though he was perhaps a bit too old for the rigours of Premier League football. But the thing is, if this rumour was true, at 35-years old now, has Campbell got another season left in the tank? I mean, it’s that little bit easier playing in defence for an Arsenal side who can actually maintain possesion and keep the pressure off their defence as opposed to what it would be like for us next season, where the defence will arguably be our most called upon position. Carroll: New contract talks in the offing?
Carroll: New contract talks in the offing?
It looks like Newcastle are going to make a move towards securing the future of one of it’s rising stars, with Andy Carroll tipped to start negotiations on a new contract.

The Chronicle say that Carroll will be offered the chance of securing his long-term future on Tyneside, which is something that will come as a blow to the likes of Bimingham and Stoke who have both been long term admirers of Carroll, apparently. The constroversial Gatshead one-punch machine gun made a move a few weeks back to distance himself from leaving Newcastle and insisted he is happy playing regular football for his boyhood club. And now it appears that he will be offered the opportunity to spend his his next few years developing on home soil, whilst also upping a sale price if any club should come sniffing around for the player. Carroll to plead ‘not guilty’.

More Carroll controversy.
More Carroll controversy.
Whilst stuck in the middle of this latest bit of media frenzy surrounding Newcastle and their finances, it can be easy to forget the real things that matter to us, like the playing side of things.

I am of course talking about Andy Carroll who has today reported to Newcastle Crown Court to enter his plea against his charge of assault occasioning actual bodily happened regarding an alleged incident that happened back in December, a charge that he is expected to answer with a ‘not guilty’ plea. At least it gives us something else to focus on other that worrying about what latest financial pearl of wisdom happens to come from our club, or from the newspapers about our club, I should perhaps say. And Newcastle fans will need to have one eye on this court case, and more particularly what the outcome will be regarding a player that is likely to be the focal point of our Premier League attack next season.
