Niall Quinn thinks Newcastle are playing transfer market games.

Quinn - an unwashed legend.
Quinn - an unwashed legend.
Our unwashed friends from down the road have today had their say on just how they interpret the revelations that Newcastle could be the poor relations in the North East next season.

Sunderland Chairman Niall Quinn is wary of the statement issued by Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley that claims we wont be spending much money over the summer, or any at all depending on which version of capital outlay you lean towards believing.

But let’s not turn this into another debate about what capital outlay means eh? A lot of clubs will be cutting their cloth in the near future, anxious not to follow in the footsteps of teams like Portsmouth and Hull with teams like West Ham United and Liverpool balanced dangerously on the edge of a financial precipice. Despite this though, Quinn has doubts over the sincerity of our apparent new austerity measures: (more…)

More delusions of grandeur from Allardyce.

Allardyce - Thinking above his station.
Allardyce - Thinking above his station.
How do you know when Sam Allardyce is talking garbage? Simple, his lips move. Following on from last weeks outburst, Big Sam has again seen fit to question something that has nothing to do with him.

Following on from last week where he very bitterly blasted Newcastle fans, Allardyce has now directed his venom at the current England boss Fabio Capello over his squad selection for the upcoming World Cup. He feels that Capello, who has overseen a remarkable transition in the England team since the departure of the wally with the brolly, has made a huge error in leaving Paul Robinson out of the squad, and blames it on some personal vendetta that Capello must have against Robinson. It isn’t the first time Allardyce has played the victim card either, more of which I will detail later, but in the meantime our former manager had this to say: (more…)

Magpies modern classics – Howay 5-0 video!

The year is 1996, the opposition was Manchester United, and after missing out on the title the previous season, Kevin Keegan and his team wanted to prove a point.

That was of course a ten minute clip of one of our greatest memories in recent times. That score sent out a message to our rivals that we were not to be messed with. (more…)

Andy Carroll – Can he cut it in the Premier League?

Carroll: Tipped for the top.
Carroll: Tipped for the top.
Andy Carroll has been one of this season success stories as he finally managed to establish himself as a regular in the Newcastle United starting line-up, and scored 19 goals in the process. But will he be able to make the step up next season?

Carroll has earned praise from some of the highest corners this season, with Alan Shearer in particular quick to praise him earlier in the season. Now more praise has come from another former player, captain and manager in the shape of Glenn Roeder, who believes the big lad can “wreak havoc” in next seasons Premier League. The number 9 in waiting has come on in leaps and bounds since Christmas time, not just with his goalscoring ability, but a general improvement in his all round play, an improvement that has seen Carroll linked with a move away from St James’ Park and alerted the England setup who believe he could be a future international player. More of the Williamson’s, less of the Marcelino’s.

Williamson: Settled Toon nicely.
Williamson: Settled Toon nicely.
Mike Williamson has been somewhat of a revelation since his arrival on Tyneside, which is more that can be said for other more high profile names that have had the chance to wear the famous Black & White stripes of Newcastle United.

Williamson was signed by Portsmouth in September 2009 but was subsequently forced to play in the reserves as the financial rot set in at Fratton Park. That meant that the South coast club couldn’t afford to pay any more of the fee owed to Watford if he made a first team appearance, which was a shame on a personal level for him but ended up being beneficial for us.

When the new season starts and August rolls around it will see Mike being given the chance of playing top level football for the first time in his career. Again, the ability of Mike to be able to make the step up has been cause of debate between some fans. Some argue that he hasn’t played top flight football for a reason, others say he was just unlucky at not getting his chance last year with Portsmouth. Given that he hasn’t put a foot wrong, other than on his surf board, since he has been here then surely he deserves his shot at the big time, and I will be backing him to succeed. (more…)
