Yannick Djalo in sensational Newcastle switch?

Toon target Djalo? Nee chance man!
Toon target Djalo? Nee chance man!
News outlets in Portugal seem to think that Newcastle are lining up a bid for Sporting Lisbon forward, Yanick Djalo.

In amongst all this World Cup malarkey we mustn’t forget that it is still a Sunday, although I am not entirely sure whether the Portuguese press are as bad as the English press when it comes to making stuff up, but either way it seems highly unlikely that the 24-year old will be heading to Tyneside anytime soon.

Djalo nearly left Sporting Lisbon during last season but decided to stay and fight, fight, fight, fight, fight for his place in the team. Whilst mainly being a striker, Djalo can also play on the wing, which would be ideal for us as we need cover in both positions, in my opinion anyway. Everton are also supposed to be interested in the player, and it’s sad to say, but if they did come calling then it would more than likely be with an offer that would blow us out of the water. Hughton again hints at new signings.

Confident of signing new players.
Confident of signing new players.
Fully refreshed from his recent holiday, Chris Hughton today returned to work in the cauldron that is Newcastle United, and was promptly put on the spot by the local press.

It seems that although Hughton has been away from his office, work has still been ongoing to make sure we have a squad capable of competing in the Premier League next time around, with the gaffer sounding decidedly optimistic regarding bringing in new faces. Rumours have been rife regarding the signing of some veteran players in the shape of Sol Campbell, Andy O’Brien and Jimmy Bullard, the latter of which is apparently joining Celtic, although Hughton has revealed that we were never really interested in any of them anyway, with the focus thought to be remaining on signing players who still have their best years in front of them rather than behind them. The transfer rumour that wont go away.

Kris Boyd: Talking up a Toon move?
Kris Boyd: Talking up a Toon move?
We are in that horrible part of the year between football seasons where nothing appears to be happening. Not just at Newcastle, but also in general.

Transfer activity is still low throughout the Premier League, the statement has been done to death, there is no fall out from relegation, we have no fixture list to look forward to. Nothing. Could you imagine how bad it would be if we didn’t have the World Cup to look forward to?

Through all that though, the rumour mill is still working at full capacity. We have had players linked with us, and then never heard of the link again. But one rumour that does seem to be standing the test of time is regarding Kris Boyd, who is now a daily feature in the newspapers round these parts.

Rumour has it that Boyd would be well up for playing for Newcastle next season, and he does seem to fit the bill with regards to what the club are apparently looking for in their signings. Boyd wouldn’t cost a penny in transfer fess, his wages would be reasonable, and he is only 26 years old. Add his goal record into the mix and I reckon we could be onto a winner, and he could be that fox in the box type player that we desperately need. (more…)

We played our part Ashley, now it’s your turn.

Ashley needs to play his part now.
Ashley needs to play his part now.
Reports at the weekend from a certain news outlet claimed that Newcastle had been in touch with them to clarify any rumours about transfer speculation, and whilst they were at it the club casually clarified that “no new capital outlay” actually meant no money to spend.

Now of course this has played right into the hands of some who choose to believe what the Sunday Sun publishes, and has raised fresh doubts and given a new avenue for criticism towards the club, despite an official statement saying that the club would not be confirming or denying anything unless it came through official channels, a fact that appears to have been forgotten by quite a few people. When it suits eh? (more…)

Onouha and O’Hara? Forget about it.

O'Hara: Too expensive, apparently.
O'Hara: Too expensive, apparently.
Over the past couple of days strong links have been bandied around regarding the possible signings of Nedum Onouha from Manchester City and Jamie O’Hara from Tottenham.

It looks like both of these deals are non-starters now, as both Tottenham and Manchester City have slapped high price tags on their respective players.

Man City have slapped a price tag of around £6-£7 million on Onouha whilst Tottenham have revealed it would require a similar fee to secure the services of Jamie O’Hara. Unfortunately, and as much as I would like to see both of these players at St James’ Park, at that price it just isn’t going to happen. Or perhaps it still could, I don’t know. But at a guess I would say that those prices take them players above what our owner is willing to spend, and if by some twist of fate we do have that sort of money to spend, would it be wise to lay all our eggs in one basket, or two in this case?
