The Toon – Twelve months on.

One year ago!
One year ago!
I’ve was just picking through some of the older articles on this site, and very good they were too, so credit where it is due. Then something struck me as I heard an advert on the TV in the background.

The new Championship season starts tonight. Remember that? You know, that thing we were in last season?

I remember the feeling back then, I think most if us do. Nobody knew what on earth was going to happen in a league which we hadn’t frequented for 16-years. It was a worrying time. I was there in our first game away at West Bromwich Albion, facing the unknown, well the relative unknown anyway as West Brom had been relegated with us. (more…)

Rangers v Newcastle – An away day guide.

Ibrox - Home of the teddy bears.
Ibrox - Home of the teddy bears.
Newcastle United head north of the border for their final pre-season game on Saturday, and will be taking at least 3,850 fans with them.

That is the official allocation of tickets given to Newcastle, and all of them have been sold. Fans will be located in the Broomloan Road stand upper and lower tiers.

I’ve been asked to provide an away fans guide for the match, so that is just what I have done. The last time we were at Ibrox was back in 1993 for Ally McCoist’s testimonial, so a lot of things would have changed in the past 17 years. If you feel I have missed anything, or if you have anything to add, then please don’t hesitate to leave a comment at the bottom of the page. (more…)

Barton is the latest in a long line of Newcastle’s mustachioed wonders.

1. Joey Barton.
1. Joey Barton.
Newcastle may have won a trophy the size of a real lighthouse on Tuesady evening in Spain, but that was merely a sideshow to the real talking point of the evening – Joey Barton’s moustache.

Joey Barton sported a rather eye-catching moustache that evening, and it is his upper-lip slug that has caused some humour amongst fans. In light of that I though that now may be good time to take a trip back down memory lane and see which other black and white heroes have sported the dignified moustache in the past.

1. Joey Barton – I had to start with him as he has started this malarkey off. Apparently Barton has grown his ‘tash to aid team bonding and to keep spirits high with the camp, and it appears to be working. Could he be the trend-setter needed to kick off a moustache growing revival? Each to their own and all that, but I most certainly won’t be growing one in the name of fashion! (more…)

Newcastle bid revealed as Ben Arfa saga rolls on.

Hatem tuned up for Toon?
Hatem tuned up for Toon?
Newcastle have actually bid for Marseille’s Hatem Ben Arfa, and the player is keen on joining us according to reports in the French press.

The French publication La Mercato is reporting that Newcastle have had a bid turned down for the player who was once dubbed as the future of French football, but talks will continue in the hope of reaching a deal.

It sounds like the player wants to come to Newcastle despite interest from Italian clubs AC Milan, Genoa and Parma and German outfit Hoffenheim. Deals including those four clubs are favoured by Marseille, but it is the player who is holding things up by waiting for Newcastle to make another move as he would prefer to come to Tyneside instead. Premier League? You’re having a laugh!

Welcome to the twilight zone.
Welcome to the twilight zone.
Thoughts on Tyneside are beginning to turn towards the start of the Premier League season and the return of real football, not this World Cup malarkey.

That task at hand is simple, survival is the minimum target. That’s not to say we can’t finish higher up the table than 17th place, but let’s just say that if somebody offered me 17th place and a guarantee of Premier League football in the 2011/2012 season right now, then I would snap their hand off.

But that got me thinking. Should we really be settling for 17th place? Can we not push on a bit higher than that, even with the players we have now? Am I being hopelessly optimistic by even contemplating this? Probably yes, according to some, but I don’t see why we can’t push on this season and secure safety in comfort. The Premier League holds no fears for me. (more…)
