The next in a long line of legends? There has been a certain shirt that has remained empty for sometime now, and even the last player to wear it didn’t ‘fill’ it as such.
I am of course talking about the legendary number 9 shirt worn by club icons such Alan Shearer, Jackie Milburn and Hughie Gallacher.
It is a shirt that has remained vacant since the departure of Obafemi Martins around a year ago now, although Chris Hughton has dropped his strongest hint yet that our wait for a new number 9 could be over pretty shortly, and it we wont even need to go out and sign someone. Yes that’s right, Andy Carroll, number nine, come on down. The local lad looks set for the number nine jersey, which could be a masterstroke. I have talked before about what is required and expected from a number nine, and although Carroll is very much a rough diamond, I believe he will thrive under the pressure and expectation it can bring. Ginola: A fantastic player in his time with us.Amidst all the speculation and statements, former Newcastle star David Ginola has today heaped praise on current Newcastle boss, Chris Hughton.
Ginola is back in the area promoting something or other, and will be at PC World in Team Valley on Friday if anyone fancies popping down to get an autograph. Ahead of that though, he gave his thoughts on Chris Hughton.
We know ourselves that Chris worked a minor miracle last season as he took a team that was devoid of any confidence and was surrounded by turmoil to the Championship title, and by some margin to boot. David worked with Hughton at Tottenham so knows our current boss better than most, and he believes that there will be no need to call for a big name manager whist Hughton is in the hot seat. (more…)
Hughton: In no particular rush.Chris Hughton has today reiterated his intention to play the waiting game and not rush into the tranfer market.
Players have been linked with moves in and out of Newcastle for some time now, and the amount of links each day is increasing. Most of these will of course be pure rubbish, but we wont know that until the transfer window slams shut at the start of September.
Hughton has insisted all along that there will be signings this summer, although it looks like it will be a case of evolution rather than revolution for the team over the close season. That admission comes despite the appearance of a rather unclear statement from the board which ended up confusing things further rather than clarifying them, something that we have a new PR person to help sort out in the future, possibly, hopefully, maybe. Could a deal for Wilshere be on?Speculation regarding interest in signing Jack Wilshere has been doing the rounds again today, and Hughton has finally admitted to being interested in securing the services of the highly rated Arsenal youngster.
Which is a confusing one really as I covered the story about Wlishere and a possible loan switch to Tyneside a few weeks back, and whilst it would appear to be a move that would be welcomed by Newcastle fans, Chris Hughton moved quickly to dismiss any interest in the player who spent the back end of last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers. Something must have made Hughton have a change of heart though, especially after what was a very quick dismissal of the kind of player we are crying out for has been followed by this recent admission of interest in bringing the player to the club. These two are going nowhere. The last few days have seen various media outlets peddling rumours about inbound transfers at Newcastle United. It has also been working the other way aswell, with a couple of players linked with moves away from the club.
As ever, one of those is Steven Taylor who seems to be attracting the usual transfer window gossip. You all know the drill by now. Aston Villa, Tottenham and probabaly Everton at some point will all be linked with a bid to tempt Taylor away from Tyneside. Perhaps a lot of it is being perpetuated by the fact that Taylor only has one year remaining on his current contract, something that will no doubt be talked about when the team return to pre-season training in early July. Chris Hughton has today had his say on Taylor: (more…)
