Fancy coming home, John?I think all in all it’s fair to say that yesterday was a rather busy day with regard to activity around the club.
First there was the matter of Andy Carroll having to face court in the morning, then there was the revelation of his strange bail conditions whereby he must live with club captain, Kevin Nolan.
The final piece of action on Tyneside came yesterday when Colin Calderwood called time on his Newcastle career as assistant manager in favour of a move north of the border to manage Hibernian. Personally, I’m not so sure just what Calderwood used to do at Newcastle though. By that I mean I am unsure just how important he has been. It has been Hughton has taken the plaudits whilst Calderwood just got on with things quietly in the background. Nonetheless, Newcastle must act quickly to find a replacement, but just who is that going to be? (more…)
Calderwood: Leaving for the "Hibees".Newcastle United first team coach, Colin Calderwood, has left the club to become the new manager of Hibernian in Edinburgh, who are currently lying eighth in the Scottish “Premier” League.
It has been no secret that Calderwood was being interviewed for the position, as it was reported by the BBC earlier today, with the announcement of his appointment finally coming later on the official websites of the respective clubs. NUFC.co.uk also reported that the Stranraer born ex ‘Spurs and Scotland defender was approached by Hibs themselves, and couldn’t resist a return to the manager’s hot seat, having enjoyed previous spells as manager at Northampton Town and Nottingham Forest before joining the Magpies.
Calderwood himself said on the move and his time at Newcastle: (more…)
Hughton - Can he cut? Maybe he can...I think it’s fair to say that the feeling of a fair few Newcastle fans would be lifted by us claiming three points against Wigan at the weekend.
It’s a must win game in the eyes of many, a feeling that I tend to agree with. After disappointing home defeats to Blakpool and Stoke, Hughton will need to ensure the team bounce back against Wigan.
In fairness we have been playing well, really well at points, and we have deserved more than we have got out of some games. Some poor luck, like against Blackpool, and some awful decision-making from certain match officials have transpired to work against us at times this season, and I feel that is contributing to the sombre (ish) mood amongst fans at the moment.
The reality is that depsite the bad luck and despite the fact we have been playing fairly well, it doesn’t change the fact that we have just the seven points to show for our efforts so far this season. It’s about time that changed! (more…)
No need for new signings says Hughton. It looks like the players that Newcastle have now will have to make do until the end of the season, if you go by what Chris Hughton has said today.
Hughton insists that he will not be tempted into making any new signings when the transfer window re-opens in January.
The news will come as a blow to fans who had hoped that January could see some reinforcements drafted in, especially given the fact that we have now lost one of our summer acquisitions for quite some time in the shape of Ben Arfa.
Speaking to the official club website, Hughton had this to say:
“I’m disappointed to have lost a player of Hatem’s quality – but we’ll not overreact to one injury in what is a very strong squad. We won’t be adding to the squad in January; I feel we have a lot of strength in depth with the players we have already and there’s no need to add to it.”(more…)
