Newcastle United v Fulham, 2011/2012
Jolly exciting!
Good afternoon Geordies. We’re up against Martin Jol’s Fulham at St James’ Park today as we attempt to continue our unbeaten start to the season.

Fulham have a good record against us and lead by 26 to 24 in the winning stakes and they apparently conceded fewer goals to set pieces than any other Premier League team last season, which is a shame as that’s been the best part of our game recently.

European football will no doubt have taken its toll on their players though and they’re without John Arne Riise as result of their midweek game against Dnipro.

For a full analysis, see Jimbob’s excellent match preview, but I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that although our Prediction Competition is well under way, although there is still time to catch up if you haven’t entered yet.

As it stands – with yesterday’s results in – ‘sveinstrand’ and ‘El Toro’ are joint top of the table with 23 points each.

Ahead of the game Martin Jol has said:

We have to do better. We have to play to our strengths and of course we could say we have got a lot of defensive qualities.

The second half against Aston Villa and Wolves showed we are capable of scoring goals. But you have to do the business – score the goals and get the results. If you don’t do that, you play for a 0-0.

Thursday, of course, was over two games so we were okay but to lose a game away from home was not what he wanted. For the confidence of the team, it is always better if you score a couple of goals and win these games. But we didn’t so it is still a worry but hopefully we can score against Newcastle because that is what we need. We need a result.

It looks like Alan Pardew will be sticking with Ryan Taylor at left-back and Taylor will be looking to score in his third game on the trot. Pardew said:

That is Ryan’s strength – he has a fantastic right foot and he can use it for a pass or a shot.

And presumably for walking, hopping, swimming and a whole host of the other usual right foot uses too.

  1. Any links for today’s game would be greatly appreciated lads.

    Gotta work today. :( (Kind of) ;)

  2. HWTL 2-0

    I hear that we have made an offer for Bendtner that was accepted but his wage demands were too high – good!
    It also stopped a swap deal with Everton
    but he may be more reasonable at the last minute, arsenal have made it clear he will not play for them again – I’ve got a feeling he’ll be in blus or B&W next week – not sure how I feel about that, but we must get someone so I’d take him

    “Nah it’s been taken down now. Bah!”

    If you mean the link you posted above, it’s still working for me Phisix.

  4. Whats the point of playing 4-4-2 when you’re midfield four are playing too narrow and your two forwards are shlte ?

    Pardwho is some sort of clown playing Best, Loven and Obertan all in the same side. 25 minutes in and still waiting for a real shot on target.

    “Commentator asking if there’s a game changer on the bench ?
    Yeah bring on Sammy”

    Stick Barton on!

    “Commentator asking if there’s a game changer on the bench ?
    Stick Barton on!”

    Sorry WT Barton’s gone because he was shlte according to those on here. Nolan went too because he was too slow according to some on here.

    Thank god we’re so much more adventurous now they’ve gone. First save by Schwarzer at 43 minutes

  7. Barnstorming first-half lads. Wow.

    Good job Fulham played on Thursday night, seems like the crowd are asleep as well.

  8. Obertan beats a man !!! Shot on target !!!! Cabaye and Raylor both go close. The 42,684 are getting their money’s worth !

  9. Possession
    * Newcastle 54%
    * Fulham 46%
    Attempts on target
    * Newcastle 4
    * Fulham 3
    Attempts off target
    * Newcastle 2
    * Fulham 1
    Corners
    * Newcastle 4
    * Fulham 3
    Fouls
    * Newcastle 7
    * Fulham 6

  10. That was a clever shot by Cabaye, would have loved to see him get that goal. If we ever get a LB, Raylor needs to play Rb as he has been immense this season. Don’t know why we did not play him more last season.

  11. Wow such a s@#t game so far. . . Cmon lads do somethng and show the world what it really means to play for NUFC!!! HWTL

  12. workyticket says:

    “We were better in the last few minutes though Andy.”

    WT we play 4-4-2 because we’re at home and supposedly have the advantage. So why don’t we feed these two strikers with quick, incisive passing moves ?

  13. Phisix says:

    “Cabaye to get a goal this game!”

    Scores mostly from penalties, but not hugely prolific otherwise. Usually more of an assistant.

  14. workyticket says:

    “Divven’t knaa why so many people moan about Best so much”

    Surely you havent forgotten S C U N Thorpe already WT ? He’s not the most deadly of strikers but maybe this will help his confidence ?

  15. Phisix says:
    August 28, 2011 at 2:34 pm

    “I’ll tell you what, Krul will be out no1 keeper for many of years now. He is utter class.”

    Still makes a few too many mistakes for my liking.

  16. Leon Best is now our joint top scorer this season, with non of our other ”main” strikers making any impact and yet he was the one that Ashley and co wantd to sell. . . He proves his worth time and time again, this season and last!!!

  17. Phisix says:

    “And we win. 7 points from 3 games a great start to the season.”

    Bloody lucky sometimes the way we’ve played in first halves in the last two games Phisix.

  18. WT says:

    “Bloody lucky sometimes the way we’ve played in first halves in the last two games Phisix.”

    Maybe they’re all fasting for Ramadan WT ?

  19. We have a knack for sucking in the first half and coming out all guns blazing in the second. It’s about time we got some luck Worky, but if our players keep gaining confidence we should do even better as the season goes on. We just need to get a proven goal scorer and a LB and feed Smith to the sharks.

  20. ” ‘sveinstrand’ and ‘El Toro’ are joint top of the table with 23 points each.”

    El Toro leading with 24. I thought he wrote that he forgotten to do them this week. Sneaky Devil!

  21. Eden Dzeko is making Danny Simpson’s “He’s pony” statement look stupid. His 4th goal was class… :-)

    On topic, Tiote had a bit of mare again, not a good performance either if I’m honest, but great start so far! Best in the Premier League for a long while (I think).

    “On topic, Tiote had a bit of mare again, not a good performance either if I’m honest”

    Ref let him get away with it a few times Jimbob.

  23. Talk about Pardew’s questionable tactics at times…Redknapp started with Krancjar and Modric in the centre of midfield with Lennon and Bale out wide… Not surprised they got smashed.

  24. Either my link was lagging or did we look slow today? I suppose Thursday night might have something to do with it, but Fulham didn’t look sluggish and passed with some urgency. We never really ‘clicked’ today.

    Oh well, Best’s goals probably now mean no striker is needed…

  25. loads of empty seats today,even some of that dreaded black fabric and a sports direct banner,over the seats.
    i hope ashley doesn’t think we need another striker,after bestie knocked two in.
    some people reckon leon is not good enough,he’s a better finisher than strolla,no danger.

  26. aye worky, looks like few are starting to vote with their feet.fulham only brought a mini bus full,but it’s still ten thousand off the gate.

    “aye worky, looks like few are starting to vote with their feet.”

    More room for Sports Direct promotional materials Trojan. :-)

  28. Looking at that Citeh team today I cant help but think why the feck didnt Mansour buy us :(

  29. aye worky, he’ll probably drape a huge sports direct banner down the leazes end,with a massive cardboard 70% off tag at the bottom.
    well apparently it was a category c game,if ashley doesn’t get his finger out,within the next few days,someone will end up as a category a,for doing him in lol.

  30. andymac, you do get a lot of fans who’ll say, they wouldn’t want to go down the rich owner route,as they think it’s cheating.f**k that,give me a mansour anyday,i’ll glady take the chance of seeing world class players on the pitch.couldn’t careless if they bought the title,as long as our name was on it.

  31. Considering we’ve won nowt major since 1969 :lol:

    I’d love it if we had the riches of City, Mansour wanted to buy Newcastle but Ashley wouldn’t sell as he’d just bought the club. I remember reading the interview.

    When Pardew keeps saying “we can’t spend like City” it’s annoying because everyone knows that and no-one is asking the club to spend like City, just spend the same as clubs around us and match their ambition…

  32. Twas slightly tongue in cheek Trojan. I dont want to buy the BPL but we’re only three quality players short of a decent side IMO. If the Fatman went down the road of downpayments with added sums paid over the course of the contract – like almost everyone else does – we could have:

    Krul
    Back Four incl LB
    Tiote Cabaye
    RW/Jonas Gosling/Vukcic HBA/Marveaux
    Quality Mobile Striker

    Jobs a good un :)

  33. Was at the game today and got to say the majority of empty seats were in the platinum club area where you couldn’t get tickets as they were all season ticket seats.
    Saying that, next to me there were three empty seats, so I had plenty of room to dance around like a prat when we scored.

  34. Agreed with others. We aren’t asking for £35m players. We are asking to get the £6m players we’ve been looking at to getv signed up.

  35. Should have scored against the Gooners on the opening day :) How many can the Mancs get now, 7-2 ??????

  36. hey, guys, see!! im not sure many of you would know me but i posted a comment on thursday giving my opinions on bestie, he’ll get good when he regains his confidence, i believe he’s got that now with his two goals, the 1st was a poacher’s goal, great positioning and awareness, 2nd, superb turn and quick feet. He held up the ball really well, i liked the play involving him laying the ball off for cabaye, showed great awareness really, knowing who’s around him, makes good decisions too really. So ppl, if you really bleed B&W like me, you’d realise bestie has ability, start supporting him, he really deserves it. He might not get us 20-25 goals a season but i reckon 10-15 would be achieved without injuries and given playing time.

    Also guys, Alan Smith might be totally crap and useless these days, but I’ll never slag off on him for what i credit him with. When Newcastle were in the worst times, relegated, he really stepped up and showed the passion and desire to don our stripes with pride, he battled for us in the lower league and was crucial for our promotion push. I’ll be happy to see him on our bench as cover for Tiote this season, seeing out his contract. I’ll bid him best of luck and support the player whoever he plays for after us.

    On a positive note, we won, great start to the season but lets not get our hopes up, we’ll struggle away against most sides this season without further reinforcements. I’d love to see Pieters and a striker here before the window shuts, I think Toivonen of PSV would be great, what do you guys think?? :) cheers and enjoy the win.

    That bit I agree with sunny (btw are you able to buy happy waccy baccy where you live ?)

    Realistically do you believe that Best is good enough to take on the top defenders in the BPL ?

    Dont disagree with your sentiments sunny but as a player worth allegedly £50-£60k a week, you’d have to agree that Smith is in the last year of his contract and his ability. Which is probably why Fatman doesnt want to pay over the odds for a player on long term contracts. Believe me he’s not worth bench status.

    This season will be sheer hell if we dont have a decent striker and a LB but then again we’re used to Sheer Hell :)

  38. what’s happy waccy baccy?? im not brittish, not familliar with your slangs… just cause im not brittish does’t mean im not a real fan, i tell you where i live you hardly get championship or carling cup telecasts, and being me, i had to watch newcastle in the championship so it was really difficult getting online and finding links streaming the game….

    Marijuana sunny. I’m sure you’re a real fan, I’ve met ’em all over the place. If you were one of these gloryhunters, you’d probably support Manchester United, Chelsea or some such.
