A season of exaggerations for Newcastle United (+win a Toon shirt)

Rafa - Manager of the Season?
Rafa – Manager of the Season?
Going on recent history, it is of course understandable to expect the worst at St James’ Park, but whilst fears of another potential relegation for the Toon were somewhat exaggerated earlier in the season, three wins on the spin has taken things in the opposite direction, with the hyperbole starting to go into overdrive. GQ magazine even went so far as to claim that Benitez has performed a “miracle” and that this miracle deserves to be rewarded with a ‘Manager of the Year’ award.

Don’t get me wrong, I am very glad that Benitez is our manager, I thought he was an excellent manager many years ago at Valencia and always thought he would do a very good job on Tyneside in the long run, but steady on! (more…)

Vote for Benny’s Blackburn bombshell in the FIFA Puskás award

Benny’s 3rd round FA Cup goal against Blackburn Rovers from January 2012.

You may have heard already that Newcastle United’s Hatem Ben Arfa is one of ten candidates for the FIFA “Puskás Award” for the best goal of the year.

However, this competition is also up for a public vote on FIFA’s official website, and I wouldn’t be doing my duty if I didn’t encourage all you Toon fans out there to get on the site and vote!

To crib unashamedly from the Wikipedia, it is described thusly: (more…)

It’s time for change!

New stuff on the way!
Dear readers, just thought I’d take some time to let you all know, especially you regular readers out there, what’s happening with the site.

As you may have realised, there have been less blogs than usual over the last few months, and no prediction competition for the first half of this season too. My colleague, Hugh, was in charge of the prediction competition and has been busy working hard for the last few months. Because the prediction competition we run on this site is quite time consuming to set up and run, I’ve been busy too, and there have also been alot of other things besides just writing the blogs which need catching up on, I decided to leave it this time. However, I havent discounted the possibilty of running a second competition later in the season IF enough people are interested. Sorry about that! (more…)

Cisse and Ben Arfa signed photo competition: The answers, the winners!

Cisse and Ben Arfa signed photos.
Who are the winners?
Well, it time to give the answers for our latest competiton and announce the winners. Before I do, please accept my apologies for the slight delay in posting this.

The biggest hurdle for most who entered the competition, so much so that I began to doubt my self and all the statistical data I used (including the Premiership’s “OPTA” stats and several others) was the question about Papiss Cisse’s “minutes per goal scored” ratio. Lots of you got all the other answers correct but this seemed to be the real stumbling block.

Anyway, without further ado, here are the questions again, this time with the answers:

Last chance to win signed Cisse and Ben Arfa photos!

Cisse and Ben Arfa signed photos.
Up for grabs this week!
Welcome to the second and final part of our latest competition to win a 16″ x 12″ signed photo of Papiss Cisse, and a 12″ x 8″ signed photo of Hatem Ben Arfa. Both are genuine, hand signed photos signed by the players themselves and would look great on any Toon fan’s wall!

Before we get to the second set of questions, the first part is here, but I will also repeat the first questions below, as well as rules of the competition.

Please note! Someone entered the answers for the first three questions on Papiss Cisse in the comments section of the last post (though one was actually incorrect, I won’t say which one!) so I’ve added another. Before I get to the second part (on Hatem Ben Arfa) here are the first four questions again. (more…)
