Marveaux clarifies his ‘first choice’ statement.

June 23rd, 2011 | 44 Comments |

...or was it?
Newcastle was not my first choice.
After yesterdays comments, Chateau Nouveau Unifie’s new signing Sylvain Marveaux, came out today in hopes of setting straight some things that may very well have been taken out of context, or as a not-so-wise man once said (I won’t name any names because workyticket deserves his privacy) – simply got lost in translation.

Yesterday he spoke exclusively to nufcTV and perhaps made an enemy of himself with some fans by claiming that Newcastle United was not his first choice of club. He also said a rather cryptic comment regarding meeting either the club or Hatem Ben Arfa at Clairefontaine without ever really specifying who this conversation was with – maybe it all happened in his head or maybe the conversation was planted in his subconscious while dreaming. We shall never know, sadly.

If truth be told, I was happy for the honesty he displayed. A lot of players read from a script and past players comments and it all gets a bit boring after a while. Hearing about how they were childhood fans and slept in their Fairs Cup replica shirt as a child that they bought from Toff’s during the families annual pilgrimage to St. James Park to worship Joe Harvey only sounds genuine to the ill of mind. Joey Barton: “I love this club and everyone knows that.”

Wants the gold logo to mean something more than a colour.
Joey Barton wants to bring silverware to NUFC.
Danny Simpson once talked Joey Barton into joining Twitter, a place to express your daily life in 140 characters or less and has lived up to his outspoken personality in such a public domain, speaking about his frustrations at Newcastle with the hierarchy and, of course, the wonderful fans.

Today after talks of Kevin Nolan being at West Ham for a medical, Joey Barton responded in typical Joey Barton style, mentioning their friendship and stating in (hopefully) tongue and cheek fashion that he was to be sold along with José Enrique and Jonas Gutierrez. Of course, Enrique was punished for stating he would not make the team due to an injury so if there’s truth to what he said, he could end up being in big trouble with the club.

Talking to Sky Sports earlier, Joey reiterated his passion for the club and his desire to stay:

“I love the football club, without a shadow of a doubt, and I think everyone knows that, I have a great working relationship with the manager and a lot of the other players, obviously the other senior players who have been through the ups and downs – the likes of myself, Kevin Nolan, Stevie Harper and Smudger.” (more…)

Best foot forward – New striker chomping at the bit!

The masked assassin strikes.
The masked assassin strikes.
Leon Best has been speaking of his elation about sealing a deadline day move to Newcastle United. The 23 year old could be set to make his debut against Cardiff City on Friday night, and many fans willl be hoping for an instant impact against an in-form and free scoring Bluebirds team.

It’s a novelty we haven’t been used to recently, players giving interviews describing their arrival at the club, but we have been spoilt in the past week! The Republic of Ireland international said of his move;

“I am over the moon with this move. I think this is the best thing that could have happened to me.”

“I heard little bits and bobs at the start of the transfer window that Newcastle were interested.”

Enrique Calls For Backup As Colo Turns Down Real!

The bull wants reinforcements!
The bull wants reinforcements!
On another slow Newcastle United news day, Jose Enrique has urged the club to capitalise on the fantastic start to the season by adding the extra players needed to give us the best shot at finishing the promotion job off.

It appears Jose is fearful of the fact that losing too many players could jeopardize the Toon’s lead at the top of the table. The former Spain Under-21 international added:

“We need new players, some have already gone.”

“We’ve got a good squad, but when people go then we need to get replacements.”

I’m sure Enrique would be alluding to the likes of Marlon Harewood and Zhurab Khizanishvilli who have both returned to their original clubs. It does seem though that Jose is remaining generally upbeat about the manager’s chances of bringing in the required players. He added:

“I am sure that Chris has this situation already in hand – if he wants my recommendations I hear that Lionel Messi and Ronaldo would be great signings!”

“It’s a big club with a lot of fans and we’re a good bet for promotion.” (more…)

Aston Villa offer Harewood back to Toon, as Leeds play hard to get over Beckford!

Back for good?
Back for good?
Interesting article from the News Of The World, which reports today that Aston Villa have offered striker Marlon Harewood to Newcastle in a permanent deal. In all honesty, we probably would have signed him by now had Aston Villa not wanted a £250,000 loan fee plus player wages of £28,000 per week paid by us!

The Midlanders have pitched their price at £1.5 million, presumably to try and tempt us away from their target, Leeds striker Jeramine Beckford and get us to plump for the experience of our former loanee instead. Marlon Harewood scored 5 goals in his loan spell earlier in the season but has yet to win all the fans over yet, his seemingly lazy and lethargic attitude being a contributor to that.

I’m not sure what to make of Harewood? Can he score goals at this level? Yes! But is also 31 years old now, so we would be signing a player with a limited amount of fuel in the tank. (more…)
