Toon’s Steven Taylor looking to be Everton mint?

Out me way, that's the 3.30 to Lime Street!
Out me way, that's the 3.30 to Lime Street!
Unfortunately, this article isn’t quite as sweet and palatable as the retro chewy mint and not just because of the quality of the writer. Despite writing about it twice already, I was fairly convinced of all the bad things to be visited upon my club this year, a home-grown talent like Steven Taylor leaving would be something I would need not worry about.

However, according to Sky Sports source, Everton are currently in talks with him over a proposed move to Merseyside.

Despite, being watched by several clubs, including Fulham, Aston Villa and Liverpool it’s claimed Everton have stolen a march on the others in their bid for Taylor, presumably in a bid to fill the void by the inevitable departure of Lescott, who was left out of his club’s recent squad to add fuel to the fire.

It’s thought that Everton representatives were at the game last night and discussions are taking place, though a transfer fee has not been agreed. (more…)

Do Toon fans give a hoot about Sheff Wed game?

Football focus
Football focus
At this rate, tomorrow night’s game against Sheff Wed is likely only to be important to many Newcastle fans for three reasons. It’ll either be staged after a takeover in the morning, it’ll be over-shadowed by a takeover on the night or it’ll be closely followed by a takeover at some point in the near future. That’s if we get taken over of course (but positive thinking and all that).

So an outsider reading blogs and forums, could be forgiven for thinking that we’ve lost the focus again after we found it at the weekend. Saturday was all about the good things in football. A fine tribute to Sir Bobby, his protégé netting his first hat-trick, while we won 3-0 at a relative canter to lift the mood on Tyneside albeit briefly. However, no sooner was the celebration of that victory over, than further rumour and speculation sought to dampen what little spirit we cling to.

Uncle Jimmy who knows Gav at the bookies who is married to Jean who cuts the hair of John, Barry Moat’s window-cleaner, and he heard that Barry will be in by Wednesday, Shearer is in charge, nobody else is leaving but players are coming in, ticket prices are down, season ticket holders will be given soft cushions and the drinks are on him. Everton rivalled by Liverpool, Villa and Fulham for Toon’s Stevie Taylor?

Looking forward to a pan of Scouse?
Looking forward to a pan of Scouse?
According to The Mirror (ahem), local lad, unfinished article and all-round top bloke Stevie Taylor has more than one suitor. It would seem the England U21 centre half is being pursued by Everton but they will be challenged to his signature by Fulham, Aston Villa and their Merseyside neighbours Liverpool.

The Mirror suggests his future has been thrown into doubt with recent open and negative comments about the current regime, which is probably not totally unfounded but let’s be honest, we won’t have much of a squad left if they keep selling those who speak up about the situation (oh hang on…..). Allegedly, Taylor was on Shearer’s list of ‘untouchables’ but considering Beye, Owen and Bassong were apparently also on it, that would seem to hold little sway within the transfer decision-making. Fulham boss Craven Duff.

Cottage industry beckons?
Cottage industry beckons?
Reports in the media tell us that Roy Hodgson has confirmed Fulham are very close to clinching a move for Damien Duff. Apparently the London club are prepared to offer the mooted £4m for the Irish winger. Of course, Roy Hodgson knows Duff well from when he became a regular at Blackburn in the late ’90s, while Hodgson was in charge.

He rates him very highly and according to the rumours Duffer is more than keen to get back down south, knowing the area well after his Chelsea days.

“The clubs are talking and I hope the deal will go through. He’s a player that interests us,” Hodgson said. “Damien and I go back a long way from when we worked together at Blackburn. He wants to come back to west London.

“Damien had injury problems at Chelsea and has done well at Newcastle given the turmoil there. Every time he’s played for Ireland he’s consistently been one of their best performers. We know what we’d be getting with Damien – he’s an experienced and quality player.” (more…)

Oh Danny Boy – another Man Utd kid comes to Toon on loan

Oooh you devil!
Oooh you devil!
Nicely timed to contradict my previous article, comes news of our first signing. Take a bow Manchester United’s Danny Simpson, who we have taken on loan until January. The 22 year old has joined us in time to make the sqaud for our game against Reading and could and takes shirt No 12.

Simpson follows the recent path of Guiseppe Rossi who had a relatively unsuccessful spell on loan up here, mainly due to lack of opportunities. Having had a number of loans spells, notably at the new home of our old pal Big Sam at Blackburn Rovers, unfortunately he also sullied his reputation by turning out for the unwashed in 2007.

Having played over 50 first team games so far, he seems like a reasonable talent although as ever with Fergie’s fringe players, if he was good enough he’d have probably made it by now. Perhaps he’ll find his level in The Championship and do a job for us. (more…)
