Hughton has his say!
Hughton has his say!
Well the England game has been and gone, and so has the tug of war between Newcastle and England that looked like it could boil over.

Carroll’s groin has been a major point talking this week after the striker looked like he could miss the opportunity to make his England debut against France last night.

The concerns from the club appeared to be unfounded, and Andy went on to make his debut anyway amid reports of the club contacting the FA via e-mail.

Basically, the rumour suggested that Newcastle had asked the The FA for Carroll to be withdrawn from the squad for fear of aggravating the groin injury that he picked up against Fulham, although with no confirmation on that from the club you could be forgiven for being a tad sceptical and putting it down to yet more press rumour-mongering.

But this time it appears that the press were right, and there was indeed some contact between Newcastle and The FA. (more…)

Steven Taylor: "Out for a while" says Hughton.
Steven Taylor: " Out for a while" says Hughton.
While last night’s worrying hamsting injury to very important left back, Jose Enrique, has already been covered in these pages, Newcastle United manager, Chris Hughton, has also been looking at the other injuries within the squad in the build up to the weekend’s away game at Leicester.

On casualties, Shola Ameobi (shoulder) and Danny Simpson (ankle) he said:

“I know Shola will be touch and go, Danny Simpson probably not, but certainly the Cardiff game.”

Moving on to longer term knee casualty, Steven Taylor, who is probably suffering with a “grade one” ligament sprain, he added:

“Steven Taylor will be out for a while, certainly a good few weeks, but at the moment, I’m not sure how long. He’s just being assessed by a couple of people.” (more…)

Shola: "50-50" for Palace clash.
In an update to our earlier story, more news has come in from Chris Hughton on the Newcastle United injury situation with centre back, Steven Taylor, midfielder, Nicky Butt, and striker, Shola Ameobi.

As reported earlier, the three hapless unfortunates were all knacked in the two titanic encounters with the butchers of West Bromwich Albion, with Shola’s shoulder, Taylor’s knee and Butt’s calf all under the spotlight.

Speaking to NUFC tv, the Stratford Supremo reported firstly on Taylor, saying:

“Steven will miss Wednesday’s game. He tweaked his knee last Monday and we’re still assessing the injury”

Although things are far from certain until all the test results have been assessed, the current Taylor situation seems a long way away from the prognosis of the Times’s North East football scaremonger, George Caulkin, who confidently asserted that the centre back had knee ligament damage that would keep him out for the rest of the season.

Moving on to Ameobi and Butt, Hughton said: (more…)

Taylor: Divven't knaa how long yet.
Newcastle United manager, Chris Hughton is playing the waiting game as he counts the cost of two costly games against fierce Championship rivals, West Bromwich Albion.

Firstly, centre back, Steven Taylor “tweaked” his knee in the thrilling 2-2 league encounter with the Midlands club, and the Times’s North East football corresspondent, George Caulkin, had reported that he would be out for the entire season. In the second FA Cup fiasco meanwhile, Fenham hitman, Shola Ameobi feel badly on his shoulder, and old midfield grunter, Nicky Butt, “felt his calf” in the build up to the cup game.

Hughton said on the carnage:

“Steven tweaked his knee against West Brom and we’ll learn more this week on the extent of that one.”

On the Shola shoulder scenario, he continued:

“Shola landed awkwardly on his shoulder at West Brom and he’s another one we assessed but we don’t think it’s anything major”.

Finally, on Butt he concluded: (more…)

Hughton: “It’s about keeping players fit”.

Hughton: "Lady Luck plays a massive part".
Hughton: "Lady Luck plays a massive part".
Chris Hughton has been talking about the issue which has been one of Newcastle United’s biggest bugbears in recent times, injuries.

So far, with a few exeptions, Hughton has managed to largely buck the trend, despite playing a longer season in a supposedly more ‘physical’ league. However, despite some clever rotational policies and the use of loan players by the Cockney Colossus, there have been some players who have proved to be indispensible to the cause this season, players such as Jose Enrique, Fabricio Coloccini, Alan Smith and leading goalscorer, Kevin Nolan.

Hughton said on the challenge:

“It’s about keeping players fit.

“When you look at the squad, we’ve got a lot of players who have played a lot of games.

“They’re good, tough individuals. (more…)
