Here’s hoping we aren’t Toffee hammered.Venue: Goodison Park, Liverpool. Date: Mon 30th Sep, 2013. Kick off: 8.00pm. Referee: Phil Dowd (Staffs). UK TV: Sky Sports.
Hello, good evening and welcome to our “match banter” feature for this evening’s game against Everton.
As I mentioned in my earlier mega-match preview for this game, this is always an interesting encounter as Everton are the closest team we can compare ourselves to, a kind of benchmark test against a team with similar resources to Newcastle United. Everton are the team we should fighting with for 7th place, though sadly, thanks to the dysfunctional nature of Newcastle Unoted under it’s current ownership, they have usually done better then we have. Here’s hoping we can reverse the usual trend this evening though. (more…)
The Magpies face a tricky Toffee test on Monday.Venue: Goodison Park, Liverpool. Date: Mon 30th Sep, 2013. Kick off: 8.00pm. Referee: Phil Dowd (Staffs). UK TV: Sky Sports.
Everton vs Newcastle United, or indeed, Newcastle United vs Everton is always an interesting encounter, a kind of benchmark as in recent times, they have been the closest side to ours in terms of the strength of our respective squads.
Above, there is a runaway top six (you know who they are), with a big gap separating them from Newcastle United and Everton. Then, behind the magpies and the Toffees there is another chasm, until we find a chasing pack consisting of the likes of Blunderland, the rapidly rising Swansea and Southampton squads, moving down through the Aston Villas, the West Broms and so on down to the poorest, Hull, Crystal Palace and Cardiff. Hence, it should should usually be a very close game.
Thinking about Newcastle vs Everton in very recent seasons, I usually end up recalling Alan Pardew’s comments about the two respective teams back in May 2012, one of those classic ‘foot in mouth’ moments he does so well. Whilst it was widely quoted that Pardew said Newcastle United “operate in a different league” to Everton, what he actually said was more like: (more…)
Basically, it is my thoughts on the following exchange between two Newcastle United fans’ representatives (Phil Patterson and Chris Forster) with unnamed representatives of the club at the recent ‘Fans’ Forum’ meeting at St James’ Park.
Cisse – Back in the goals against Leeds. My latest blog at metro.co.uk is now up!
Now entitled “Left-field selection Sammy Ameobi helps Papiss Cisse break his Newcastle scoring duck,” it orignally had the same title as this piece until a sub-editor got his or her hands on it. Thankfully though, they seem to have left the story intact this time, apart from taking my correct spelling of ‘Yoan Gouffran’ and changing it to ‘Yoann Gouffran’ like another French player, Yoann Gourcuff.
Enough of my petty griping though, the piece itself takes a look at the return of Papiss Cisse to the score sheet in Wednesday evening’s League Cup game against Leeds United. It also takes a look at the role of two of the best players in that particular game, Sammy Ameobi and Yoan Gouffran. In particular I look at how, for a change, Alan Pardew actually had a left footed player, Ameobi the younger, playing on the left hand side rather than a right footer who would constantly cut in. This resulted in a superb left footed cross by the big lad for Cisse’s goal, with Ameobi also playing a role in Gouffran’s spectacular second goal in what was an excellent performance overall on the wing from the youngster.
