Toon target Europe within a year according to new signing

Cabaye says Newcastle United are targeting Europe within a year.
Europe in a year?
New Newcastle United midfield Yohan Cabaye talks about Europe and how other new recruits will be joining him during this transfer window.

New recruit Yohan Cabaye seems generally impressed with things at Newcastle and hopes we’ll be in Europe within a year. In a recent interview he said:

I am going to play in the best championship in the world for a club who want to get back into Europe within a year and one who are building an ambitious team.

He is talking about Newcastle isn’t he? Just thought I’d check.

He then goes on to suggest that he’s just the first of many signings the club has planned for this transfer window, saying:

I am the first recruit but I have discussed things with manager Alan Pardew and I know others will follow. The directors have assured me on this point.(more…)

Erding, Sow, Gomez? Just who is the mystery striker?

Erding may be on Newcastle's wish list.
Erding - mystery striker maybe?
Newcastle United are allegedly planning a ‘mega-bid’ for some ‘mystery striker’, but who could it be?

That idea of ‘mega-bids’ and ‘mystery strikers’ does sound like The Sun is spicing up the story a bit. Having said that though, it’s probably true within reason. We certainly need a striker and there’s no denying that it’s currently a mystery as to who that might be, and ‘mega-bid’ is a woolly term that could mean anything. One man’s mega-bid is another man’s cheese sandwich as they say (although not often).

I would therefore suggest that The Sun’s story is completely true for once.

It’s up to us to try and guess who this mystery striker might be though.

About 10 days ago I picked up some rumblings in the foreign press about our potential interest in Melvut Erding (or Mevlüt Erdinç if you like) and I still think he’s a likely candidate.

The 24 year-old Turkish striker plays for Paris Saint-Germain and has 22 goals in 51 games for them. He has also played 10 games for Turkey, getting the ball in the net once. (more…)

Nolan unhappy with top 7 finish clause in offered contract?

June 12th, 2011 | 76 Comments |

Newcastle United's contract offer to Nolan included a top 7 finish clause.
Future unknown
Allegedly the new contract that Newcastle United offered to Kevin Nolan was only due to be activated at the end of next season and then only if the club finished in the top 7 in the Premier League.

The Mirror is attempting to shed some light on Kevin Nolan’s contract situation, although whether that’s the light of truth or some light of their own invention is open to interpretation as no official sources are quoted at all.

Allegedly the contract Nolan was offered was not due to be activated until the end of next season and would only be viable if Newcastle secure a top seven finish. The contract apparently included a bonus and a £10k/week rise although that, like the contract itself, would only be activated if the team finish in the top seven.

But Nolan didn’t fancy the look of that sort of contract and rejected it.

I can’t say I blame Nolan to be honest. Unless every player’s contract is dependent on a top seven finish it hardly seems fair to single Nolan out as he can’t get the club into the top seven on his own. (more…)

Gameiro definitely a no-no. Nolan possibly a go-go.

Martin Jol is interested in Newcastle United captain Kevin Nolan.
Fancied by Jol
Martin Jol is allegedly interested in Newcastle United captain Kevin Nolan and Kevin Gameiro rules out any chance of comin to Tyneside.

I think we’d all pretty much accepted that Lorient’s Kevin Gameiro wasn’t coming to Newcastle and the player himself has now confirmed that, saying:

I’ll think about my future in the coming days.

It will be Paris or Valencia. The two clubs are very good.

I will calmly make my decision over the next days.

I love both clubs. I have always been attracted to Spain.

We will see what will happen. An agreement has yet to be made with Lorient.

So we can scratch that one off the list.

There is still the question of Lille’s Gervinho of course and whilst he’s confirmed he wants to play in the English Premier League, he’s also said that he wants to prove himself in a ‘large European club’. That could be taken to mean a club playing European football next season, which would make Manchester City and Arsenal the favourites of his alleged English suitors.

Rumour has it that Alan Pardew has cut his holiday short to officially welcome Yohan Cabaye to Newcastle United. That could happen today and whispers of press conferences have reached my delicate (and rather fetching) ears, although such rumours may of course be total bunk. (more…)

£3m for Nolan rejected, but do we need him anyway?

Newcastle reject West Ham's bid for Kevin Nolan.
£3m from West Ham rejected
Newcastle United have allegedly rejected a £3m offer from West Ham for team captain Kevin Nolan.

I have to say up-front that solid quotes about this matter are sorely lacking but it seems that West Ham’s bid of £3m for Kevin Nolan was rejected.

Definitive information about Nolan’s contract situation is also difficult to pin down. The rumour is that Kevin Nolan was offered a two year extension to his contract, which he refused because he wanted a five year deal. This has led certain elements of the media to conclude that the 28 year-old is now ‘unsettled’ at Newcastle. Whether there’s any truth in that matter is yet to be seen, although we do know Nolan’s contract negotiations were under way and then we heard nothing else about it, possibly pointing to some sort of problem with the negotiations.

The Daily Mail goes one step further than the rest of the media and suggests that Newcastle want £6m for the player who, they point out, scored more goals than Wayne Rooney last season. Although they could simply have plucked that figure out of thin air.

But do we need Kevin Nolan anyway? (more…)
