Jonas: Would he stay? Or would he go?
Jonas: Would he stay? Or would he go?
Of course, as most of you no doubt know, Magpie wing wonder, Jonas Gutierrez, will be playing for Argentina in the 2010 World Cup finals within the next few weeks. The world leading squad will include the likes of Champion’s League winning Diego Milito and Walter Samuel from Inter Milan, from the other finalists, Bayern Munich, Martín Demichelis. The Premier League will be represented by illustrous players such as Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez, along with Manchester City dynamo, Carlos Tevez. From the top of Spain’s La Liga, there’ll be players such as Royal Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuaín, Athletic Madrid’s Sergio Agüero, and of course, a certain fellow called Lionel Messi from Barcelona. There are many more, yet in this exalted company, Argentina’s coach and one of the most legendary figures of them all in world football, Diego Armando Maradona, has even remarked that Gutierrez was automatically the third name to go on his teamsheet, which is praise indeed. Whether a great coach or a madman, a man of Maradona’ undoubted talents should be able to recognise a top player when he sees one. (more…)

Spidey: Representing Tyneside in South Africa.
Spidey: Representing Tyneside in South Africa.
With the World Cup only a short couple of weeks away, it seems inevitable that the focus of many football fans across the world will be shifting towards what is happening in the biggest football tournament on the planet.

In a change from years gone by, Newcastle have only one representative at the World Cup after Fabricio Coloccini was cruelly axed from the preliminary Argentina squad by boss, and cheat, Diego Maradona.

That means that Jonas Gutierrez will be the only player flying the black and white flag when the tournament kicks off in earnest, and Wor Spidey reckons his colleagues back home on Tyneside would rather root for Argentina than England. Sounds a bit far fetched to me like, but then it is from an interview in The Sun, so who knows what snippets of information have hit the cutting room floor? After all, the press aren’t our friends at the minute, are they? (more…)

Jonas jets off for the summer.

Heading away for a well earned break.
Heading away for a well earned break.
After getting the chance to lift a trophy in front of the home fans last Saturday, Jonas Gutierrez now heads off to the sun for a well earned rest before the start of the World Cup in the summer.

There is no need for him to stick around Tyneside when he isn’t needed and all the targets that really matter are all sorted already, so why not give a player that is sure to be heavily involved this summer the chance to rest for a while? After all, he has been one of our most consistent performers of the season and has worked wonders when combining down the left hand side of the pitch with another one of the three amigos, Jose Enrique. We have even got to have a look at this Spiderman mask malarkey that we had heard about, the one that the Premier League wouldn’t allow as part of it’s ‘no fun’ policy. As it happened it was largely irrelevent anyway as Spidey never really looked like scoring in what was a fractured team last season. (more…)

Chris Hughton: The sixth manager to gain promotion for NUFC.
Chris Hughton: The sixth manager to gain promotion for NUFC.
On the event of Newcastle United’s promotion to the Premier League, I decided to take a look at some of the statistics of Newcastle United’s season in the Coca Cola Championship, and here are some of the results.

Chris Hughton is the sixth manager in Newcastle United’s history to acheive promotion into the top tier of English football. The first was Frank Watt and the Newcastle United Selection Committee of 1892-1929. Watt was the longest serving and most successful manager in Newcastle United’s history, though his teams were selected by commitee. The full list is below.

1897-8: Frank Watt and the Newcastle United Selection Committee
1947-8: George Martin
1965-66: Joe Harvey
1983-84: Arthur Cox
1993-4: Kevin Keegan
