Santon: "Very glad" to be at Newcastle United.
New Newcastle uniited defender, Davide Santon has revealed the reasons why he joined Newcastle United in an interview with Italian sports journal, Corriere dello Sport.

The player had also been linked with Italian Serie A club, Roma, though one of the player’s representatives, Claudio Vigorelli, conceeded shortly before the move that Newcastle was the preferred destinaion for the much vaunted utility man when he said:

“At this time, there is no possibility that Santon can join Roma because right now the aim is Newcastle.”

In Santon’s interview, he revealed that while “i Giallorossi” were the only Italian club he’d have accepted with enthusiasm, they were only looking for a loan deal from former team, Internazionale, whereas the Magpies took him on a five year contract for a fee thought to be around £5 million. Llambias: Understands fan's frustrations?
Llambias: Understands fan's frustrations?
Most of you will be aware by now that yesterday, Newcastle United’s Managing Director, Derek Llambias, issued a statement on the club’s performance in the latest transfer window. It read:

“Now that the transfer window has closed, we have had some time to reflect on the business we have conducted over the summer.

“Our aim was to secure young players who represented value for money and could add real strength to the squad. The majority of our transfer dealings were completed in the early part of the window and we feel we have signed some players of exceptional quality. Yohan Cabaye, Sylvain Marveaux, Mehdi Abeid, Demba Ba and Gabriel Obertan were all brought in early and we have seen these players settle quickly into the squad and perform well on the pitch.

“Earlier this week we were delighted to sign Davide Santon from Inter Milan to fill our left-back position after the departure of Jose Enrique. Davide is an excellent young prospect and we’re sure he’ll be another superb addition to the squad. We also welcomed young goalkeeper Rob Elliot from Charlton Athletic who will help us retain healthy competition for that position after loaning out Fraser Forster to Celtic. (more…)

Davide San-toon speaks to nufcTV

Italian starlet gives his first interview in Toon
We learned today that Davide Santon was officially a Newcastle player and that, begrudgingly the Daily Mail was correct. Again.

Personal bias aside, the 20 year old utility man gave his very first interview to nufcTV and discussed a few things. An interesting note is that, like many of the new lads through the door, he barely speaks a word of English so perhaps communication could be a problem on our back line?

As always, Rob Scanlon conducted the interview with the new lad and as always, I’m here to give you a taste of what was said.

RS: Davide, welcome to Newcastle United what made you decide to move to England, and why this club in particular?

DS: I came here because it’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League. And to play for Newcastle is even better – to play for such a historical club and such a great club.

RS: Was it a difficult decision leaving the country of your birth?

DS: It’s never easy to leave any country, never mind Italy. It was a difficult decision, but I’ve only been here a short while and I feel comfortable. (more…)
