Santon: "Very glad" to be at Newcastle United.
New Newcastle uniited defender, Davide Santon has revealed the reasons why he joined Newcastle United in an interview with Italian sports journal, Corriere dello Sport.

The player had also been linked with Italian Serie A club, Roma, though one of the player’s representatives, Claudio Vigorelli, conceeded shortly before the move that Newcastle was the preferred destinaion for the much vaunted utility man when he said:

“At this time, there is no possibility that Santon can join Roma because right now the aim is Newcastle.”

In Santon’s interview, he revealed that while “i Giallorossi” were the only Italian club he’d have accepted with enthusiasm, they were only looking for a loan deal from former team, Internazionale, whereas the Magpies took him on a five year contract for a fee thought to be around £5 million. Santon said of the interest:

“I was very close to joining Roma and they were the only Italian club I’d have accepted with enthusiasm, because the new management gives space to young players.”

“Roma enquired after me several times, proposing a loan deal, as did Newcastle. With three days of the transfer session left, the British club made the right proposal to Inter.

“I was very glad, as otherwise I risked staying at San Siro and sitting in the stands for the whole season.

“It was over at Inter. My adventure had concluded and I would not have had the opportunity to prove myself again.”

  1. This does look like a very good player and the only real question now it what to do with R.taylor as far as the defense is concerned. r.taylor with his free kicks earning us points already seems to valuable to leave out of the starting 11, he;s either going to be put on the right wing where barton played or is competition for simpson at rb.

    ………………..krul…………..

    simpson…s.taylor ….colocinni…santon

    ……………….tiote……………..

    r.taylor……..cabaye…….gutierrez

    ………..best………….ba…………

subs: obertan, shola, sammy, vukic, abeid, williamson, gosling, lovenkrands.

the squad has plenty of players who can play winger/centre mid/striker but if more than 1 defender is injured/suspended the back 4 is in trouble I think, if we lose 1 defender then r.taylor can step back in but if we lose 2 we are really weakened.

key players for top 10 success this season: coloccini, ben arfa, cabaye, gutierrez, Ba and best for the goals.

  2. Let’s hope he’s given chance to settle in.

If Llambias isn’t sacked for his abject failure to get a quality striker into the club, then Ashley really is taking the p.

I think “Llambias Out” should be the aim.

  3. @MrFlibbles

    Aren’t Shola & Willo crocked …?

I think your starting 11 are about right.
Obertan for Raylor for me with Raylor coming on for Obertan last 15-20 minutes and taking the late free-kicks that we seem to get thanks to Jonas.

Fingers crossed we don’t get an injury or suspension to a CB or we are screwed big-time … bloody fools gambling to save peanuts.

  4. Weird that so many people have voted poor and very poor, we’ve brought in Cabaye, Santon, Ba, Obertan, Marveaux and Abeid – 3 of those are proven international players !

  5. if we’d have brought in a striker I would have said we’d had a very good window, however we didn’t so voted well

  6. Just imagine what the reaction would be like if we weren’t 6th.

Marveaux looks like a canny player, i look forward to seeing more game time from him.

There are teams with smaller squads than us.

“Weird that so many people have voted poor and very poor”

I suppose it depends how you look at 4411, ie whether the starting point was augmenting an already strong and settled side, or having to replace several key players such as our two highest goalscorers and our two previous players of the season.

  8. I voted average before Santon signed – but I’d up that to good now

Like every else I’m still mega annoyed about no CF, but I’ve had my rant and thats it – lets now support what we have! Especially our forwards – Bestie needs our support to get 3-4 games under his belt to build his confidence. He has shown skill, positional sense and can score good goals – his superb first touch, turn and shot from Ba’s cross was top class – if a chelski or manure megabucks foreigner has scored it everyone would be drooling!

so come on – get behind the lad! with good wing service he can do well!

Clint, the estimate on that World cup medal seems very low. If I was the gadgie who found it, I’d have sent it down to Budds in london for sale when there was a World Cup on.

I seem to recall the last example of one of those, and there aren’t many, was estimated at up to £20,000 at a Budd’s auction at Sothebys, not £3-5000. Depends on condition / provenance though too.

  10. I voted Poorly, but I am not saying the likes of Cbabaye are bad signings. It is mainly due to the failure to address the striking department after 7-8 months of searching. For me, there’s no excuses and a big minus.

  11. I think we done wel in the market dis year I know the striker situation is not ideal but only because they are similar in style shola best and ba,mcloven isnt good enoug and sammy has to prove himself more yet. Im a tipperary man same as shane long and I met him sat night in Dublin I asked him why he didnt come to nufc he told me “whenever they want me” . Not being patriotic but I see him as the perfect complement 2 our midfield dependant strike force.hard working, intelligent and fast.dont take this as bashing the lads we have im fully behind em and still think we wil finish in top ten. I jus feel we missed out on a great player to mention one thanks to fcb’d tightness. Only hope the famous sign was taken down for a big for sale sign!

  12. ANY1 NOWS IF SAMUEL ADGEI IS STILL PLAYING IN NUFC RESERVES? His a wounderkid we sign in 2009 just like vuckic.he is a swedish CF DUBBED THE NEW IBRAHIMOVIC,HES OUR FUTURE NUM9,I WAS EXPECTING HIM TO BE PUSHING 4 A FIRST TEAM SLOT OR SEND ON LOAN 4 EXPIRENCE,ANY1 WITH INFO ABOUT SAMUEL?

  14. this is a big chance for the youngins sitting in the background to step up a level and mark there place, is that not why we invested in a good youth policy ? i,d like to see sammy get more of a chance, he proved he can score and change a game, vukic is also a good talent so things are,nt too bad at all, i,d let sammy step up the mark , people say he,s not ready but he,s put an extra spark to the game every time he,s came on

  15. with Santon know here id play a 4 , 1 , 4, 1 with ba on the left spiderman on the right and R taylor sitting behind tiote & cabaye up front prefer sammy to best . And make Ryan a free roaming position (fill the gaps in defence and midfield.

  16. I think we have done well in the Tranny Market, we got our LB, we actually have more than 1 winger in the team. Only downside is we have not bought another striker, but it would not be fair on Ba and Best to get pushed down the pecking order for the new striker and Ameobi

  17. i think sammy will be our third striker behind best and ba bring sammy on 15-20 miutes he would change the game he is the one to keep an eye on
