Come on England! The second game of England’s World Cup campaign gets underway soon where we get the chance to pit our collective wits against Algeria in Cape Town.
A win is a must if England are to ensure that their path through to the knockout stages stays in firmly in their own hands as the competition begins to show signs of hotting up at long last.
As ever, this is the place to come together and piss and moan about the England game, and at least it offers us a welcome change from pissing and moaning about Newcastle, for the time being anyway.
After a disappointing start to their campaign against the USA, the England team know that they eyes of the nation will be on them and that the press will be sharpening their knives in anticipation of another potential slip-up.
For a bit of background on the match you can take a look at my World Cup match preview here should you choose to, or alternatively you can join in the fun and banter straight away by leaving your thoughts below. (more…)
Come on England!England head into their second game of the group stage of the World Cup on Friday evening looking to put a disappointing performance against the USA behind them.
A 1-1 draw with the States left an entire nation asking more questions about the various merits of the squad, and whether or not this England team would be able to live up to their label of third favourites for the tournament.
Since then a lot more football has been played, and it does appear that Englnad were not the only team who have failed to play to their potential thus far. That is not to say that the USA didn’t play well, but for a team that is supposed to be third favourites, England should really have been expected to win the game.
But that has gone and we now move on to Cape Town where we go toe to toe against the Desert Foxes of Algeria who face the possibility of their exit from the tournament being confirmed tomorrow evening if results earlier in the day go against them. Basically, if Slovenia beat the USA and Algeria lose against England then there is no way back for them and they will bow out of the tournament. (more…)
Idiot!England and the USA played out a pretty even 1-1 draw last night in the opening match in Group C last night, but the scoreline doesn’t really reflect the real story of the match.
The match stats will suggest that England had more shots, more corners, more possesion and a higher passing accuracy, but that also doesn’t really tell the whole story. All I need to do is utter two words – Robert Green. His failure to get the basics of goalkeeping right ultimately cost his country the win. Going into the tournament there had been plenty of discussion regarding who should get the nod between the sticks. It turns out that Rob Green got his chance to shine on the world stage last night, and that howler against the USA will ensure the debate continues as to who should be our goalkeeper. (more…)
Come on England! For fans of England and the USA the wait is nearly over. The first game of our respective World Cup campaigns will be under way, and the two favourites to progress from the group face each other in the opening match of Group C.
Both teams will obviously want to win their opening game, but unfortunately that is something that can’t happen. A draw probably wouldn’t be the end of the world for either team, as both teams look to strong for the either Algeria or Slovenia and would probably go through to the knockout stages anyway. Sod that though, I want an England win. Come on England!
This may well be a special version of our infamous match banter articles, but the theory remains the same. As ever, this is the place to come together and piss and moan about all things to do with the match, with a little bit of friendly banter mixed in for good measure.
You can read my England v USA World Cup match preview here if you haven’t already, and mull over the team selection aswell as digest a few selcted statistics from previous encounters and tournaments. (more…)
Believe...England kick off their World Cup campaign this evening by taking on the USA in Rustenburg’s Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
England boss Fabio Capello will have his men drilled and will be expecting to take three points from the opening game of the group, although the USA should by no means be under-estimated. The Americans are currently ranked at number 14 in the world, and although that is six places behind England, it could indicate that the result tonight is far from nailed on.
Today is the day the World Cup really starts for me as depsite how nice it was to be able to watch the football get underway yesterday, nothing beats the chance to see your own country represented on the world stage.
Team selections have been understandably kept under wraps although I reckon that I can make a pretty good fist of guessing who will play, although I guess you guys will decide on that later whilst I am in the pub. The opening match is always a hard game to judge as there are so many questions to answer. Will we start off slow? Will the USA start off fast? Whatever happens, we will all have a better idea of just how both teams look by later on tonight. (more…)
