Toon search for a central defender sees bid for Mariappa rejected

Too get bids rejected for Mariappa.
£3m bid rejected, apparently.
Having strengthened the forward line, Newcastle United continue to pursue some cover in central defence. Although without much luck so far.

Now that we’ve unexpectedly strengthened our strike force with the addition of Papiss Demba Cissé, the club’s attentions have turned back to what they said was the priority position they need to get cover for. Namely the central defence. A fact that Pardew reiterated yesterday when he said:

We want to bring a defender in, that’s what I’ve said and we’ll try and do that if we can because we ain’t got no cover. If we had an injury at centre-half, we’re going to look vulnerable. The phone will be switched on and I’ll be monitoring the transfer window

According to Sunday’s Sun, Pardew still has his full £8m transfer budget available to him as the money to buy Cissé came from the summer transfer budget, and Pardew said:

I wouldn’t bring a player in if I didn’t think he could challenge for the first team – full stop. If I don’t think a player can come straight into the first team, it makes no difference to me.(more…)

Papiss Cisse signs for Newcastle!
Cisse: He's here! He's gone! But he'll be back!
First of all dear reader, I would like to apologise.

I meant to have this posted yesterday evening. However, due to a certain bearded Newcastle United shirt sponsor, his chronically unreliable Broadband and constantly engaged customer service (who’s existence I am beginning to doubt), that sadly wasn’t possible in the end. As a certain Mr.J.Rotten once (rightly) said in regard the fellow in question:

“Never trust a Hippy.”

But I suspect that you don’t really want to read any more of my enraged rambling (unless perhaps, you want to know which Broadband provider to avoid like the plague) so I’ll get on with it!

Below is the interview given by Papiss Demba Cisse to “NUFC TV” after his signing was confirmed yesterday, along with additional verbiage from Alan Pardew and Derek Llambias (Booooooo!)

This is what Cissé had to say on his signing: (more…)

Papiss Demba Cissé
Papiss Demba Rodney Cissé: No plonker when it comes to goals!
Papiss Demba Cisse and his current club Freiburg have now agreed a deal in principle for the player to join Newcastle United for a fee of around £7.5 – 9 million according to Sky Sports’ David Craig, though the deal will be subject to a medical.

The player was spotted at the club’s Benton trainng ground before he departs to join Senegal teammate, Demba Ba, at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equitorial Guinea.

As I pointed out in a September story, Cisse is the striiker that Newcastle United should have been going for all along, and he should already have a very good understanding with Ba with their previous experience together in the Senegal national side. (more…)

Carroll, Morrison, Hoilett and Zaha. All rumours – no action yet.

Zaha allegedly a Newcastle United target.
Zaha allegedly a Newcastle United target
Rumours abound about Andy Carroll, Ravel Morrison, Junior Hoilett and Wilfried Zaha but so far there has been no action from Newcastle United in this transfer window.

After yesterday’s rumours about Andy Carroll‘s potential return to Newcastle, people have been queueing up to dismiss it all as twaddle. Apparently Newcastle have denied they’ve had any contact at all with Liverpool about Carroll and Carroll himself allegedly Twitted that it was rubbish, although the only quoted denial I could find was from Kenny Dalglish, who yesterday said:

Och aye the noo, I am worried about the people that invent these rumours. They have absolutely no foundation whatsoever. I don’t need to justify what is in the paper. I have stood up – and always will stand up – for the players.

And yet the rumours seem to persist and a lot of the press still think Carroll will eventually return to Newcastle, possibly at the end of the season. Make what you will of it! (more…)

Is Carroll set for a return to the promised land after a year in the wilderness?

Andy Carroll rumoured to have been offered back to Newcastle United.
Back in black and white?
Newcastle United appear to be interested in a couple of strikers if press reports are to be believed, one of which could be Andy Carroll.

The big news to hit the press today is the rumours that Newcastle may be trying to strike a deal to bring Andy Carroll back from Liverpool.

Our friend the Daily Mail says that a top agent rang Newcastle to offer them Carroll for just £20m, which we refused, and then the agent came back and offered him for £15m plus add-ons (whatever they may be), which again was refused by Newcastle. The Mail goes on to suggest that Newcastle are prepared to offer £10m for the player – substantially more than Derek Llambias’s previous estimate that he’s worth “eff all” – as long as Carroll takes a substantial cut in his £90k/week salary.

Carroll has only managed 6 goals in his 31 appearances for Liverpool since his £35m move a year ago in contrast to the 11 he scored for us in 20 games in the half season before we sold him. He has had to content himself with coming on as a substitute for Liverpool more often than getting a place in the starting XI. (more…)
