Toon search for a central defender sees bid for Mariappa rejected

Too get bids rejected for Mariappa.
£3m bid rejected, apparently.
Having strengthened the forward line, Newcastle United continue to pursue some cover in central defence. Although without much luck so far.

Now that we’ve unexpectedly strengthened our strike force with the addition of Papiss Demba Cissé, the club’s attentions have turned back to what they said was the priority position they need to get cover for. Namely the central defence. A fact that Pardew reiterated yesterday when he said:

We want to bring a defender in, that’s what I’ve said and we’ll try and do that if we can because we ain’t got no cover. If we had an injury at centre-half, we’re going to look vulnerable. The phone will be switched on and I’ll be monitoring the transfer window

According to Sunday’s Sun, Pardew still has his full £8m transfer budget available to him as the money to buy Cissé came from the summer transfer budget, and Pardew said:

I wouldn’t bring a player in if I didn’t think he could challenge for the first team – full stop. If I don’t think a player can come straight into the first team, it makes no difference to me.

If press reports are to be believed we haven’t had much luck in our pursuit of defender so far though. We have allegedly had 3 bids for West Ham’s James Tomkins turned down and now turned our attention to Watford’s Adrian Mariappa instead. However, according to the Daily Mail we’ve had a £3m bid for him turned down too. Some slightly earlier reports suggest that we also had a £2m offer turned down, but I don’t know if that means we made a £2m offer first and then improved it to a £3m offer or whether the press was just confused about how much we offered.

Much was rumoured about Montpellier’s Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa at one time but I’m not sure what happened to that.

Meanwhile, moving away from the defence, it seems that Auxerre striker Alain Traoré claimed that he had ‘received a proposal’ from Newcastle United’s directors a few days ago, although his club’s president insists there have been no bids. It could be that there was some interest in him before we got Cissé but have now cooled our interest.

We are also apparently watching French Ligue 2 winger Anthony Knockaert who, when asked by Football Mercato “Newcastle monitors your performance. What exactly?“, said:

They are in touch with my agent. Now, I take care of my work and nothing else. My agent does not put me in mind for all that I can demonstrate the best way. He lets me work, I do not take myself too much of a lead. I do my job, many young take the steps themselves, I do not take the lead.

This definitely looks like ‘one for the future’ though as the 20 year old Guingamp player only has 25 Ligue 2 games to his name (and 2 goals).

Right, well I’m off on holiday for a few weeks now so I’ll catch you all when I get back. In the interim all I can say is Howay The Lads!

  1. Well I’d rather have a 20 year old Guingamp player only has 25 Ligue 2 games to his name than that lump of wood known to us a Strola playing thats for sure… especially if he’s go the hump because we’ve brough in Cisse to play along side Ba….

As for defenders, why would we want this guy, he’s no different to Perch ffs… I’d rather have a under par Kadar as backup than spend over £3m on someone who’s not going to improve our squad any… the fact that no one know much about him says he’s a nobody & we’ll just have another squad players who’s picking up wages & getting no games… don’t we have enough of those already!!!

Have a good Hol Hugh, hope yer still gonn awatch the games while yer away.. where too btw???

Toon, I think he’s running around like a blue arsed fly before buggering off so I’ll answer for him. he’s off to India. Divven’t knaa if he’ll be watching the games but whenever I’ve been in India and SE Asia it’s easier to watch the games than it is over here!

  3. @1 mariappa is one of th best young defenders in the championship. come on a hell of alot. deffo worth a gamble.

  4. Have a good hols Hugh :)

Aye we could do with a decent centre-half, but I’m still equally concerned about big last minute bids from so-called “big clubs” for some of our stars like Strolla and Lovenkrands…..

  5. We should put a bit in for alex or samba we could get them for 5 million and there proven in the premier league.

  6. I’d look again at Bassong – he’s now 26 and his only way out of spurs looks like QPR.

We sold him in 2009 for what I understood was for an initial fee of £8m which would rise to £12m on performance- related conditions.
Did we ever get the extra £4m?
Are we due a cut if he goes to QPR?
Would we get a discount if he returned?

  7. “neither fits in with the clubs “buying strategy” as they are over 25” – the club statement says that is only a guide – we would take asuitable older player if need be.

  8. BTW – less than a week left of transfer window. There is a rundown of transfers until midnight on an extended MOTD next tuesday night.

  9. Hear we put in a bid of £750,000, for Mariappa, surely not ?
    Though i hav,nt seen the guy, £750,000 ?
Guess things dont change, buy em younger, cheaper and better.
    Joey was right.

  10. Samba ?
Four year contract and you have the best playing years of a footballer, 28 through 31.
With size to dominate both in the air and on the ground, an under-rated player, who would do a lot for this back four.
Hell i would sell Colo. then buy both Samba and Mariappa.
But then what do i know ?

  11. I’ve been doing my research, as I did with Cisse for several months, and I can say that Jan Vertonghen is the defender we SHOULD be going for.

    “Why worky, in your humble…”

No, in my not so humble and very well informed opinion Clint. Alan and Graham took my advice about Cisse and they should with Vertonghen too.

    “Aye,
but why, what have you found out?”

Just that he is a top of the range player who is highly versatile in almost all defensive positions (including mid like Mr.T). But as you should know I don’t say such things lightly, I do it on the back of extensive research.

  14. Originally brought to the fore during Jol’s time at Ajax, he’s a complete defender who can score wondergoals. Trained by the likes of De Boer, Bergkamp, and possibly even the greatest Dutch master of them all since he returned to Ajax as a member of the supervisory board. Ashley would have to really stick his hand in his pocket though as he’d probably cost a “Coloccini” (£10 million+)

  15. Actually, I correct myself a little about Vertonghen. He can play centre back, anywhere on the left side and defensive mid.

It was Cruyff who put me on to him, he’s a great admirer and you don’t get higher praise than that.
