Newcastle United vs Manchester United match banter.

January 4th, 2012 | 132 Comments |

Newcastle United v Machester United.
Magpies host Grumpy's wounded animals this evening.
Good evening Geordies and welcome to our latest match banter feature, which sees the Magpies hosting the team who have almost certainly been our fiercest foes in the Premiership down the years. I am of course referring to Manchester United.

This match will be all the more difficult for the Mags too as Manchester United will be allowed to field their twelfth man for this match. I am of course referring to referee Howard Webb, who will be on penalty awarding, sending off and extra, extra time awarding duties for the Red Devils this afternoon. The Manchester club will also come into this game as wounded animals though, having gone down to a shock 2-3 home defeat to Premiership bottom feeders, Blackburn Rovers.

If you would care to peruse some in depth background to the game, I would exhort you to check out UTD111’s excellent and extensive match preview for the game, which really is a jolly good read! May we also remind you that we will also be posting our usual match report, along with match highlights and post match interviews from the game when they become available.

NUFCBlog competition results.
Close finish!
The first ‘season’ of the NUFCBlog competition finished yesterday and it was pretty close!

First of all, Happy New Year everyone. I hope it’s a good one for you all (and for the Toon of course).

Now, as to the competition, I note that three people were inconsiderate enough to finish in first place, which is a poor show.

Clint can’t claim a prize as he’s a writer here – sorry Clint but congratulations on a good finish. So that leaves El Toro and GeordieMagpie as joint winners, with GrandPooBah in third.

The draw means we have to implement the competition’s version of a Duckworth-Lewis rule, which involves much differentiation and integration. I worked on the calculations for 8 hours last night, using up much time on IBM’s ‘Big Blue’ supercomupter, and found that after much mega-mathematics it resolves down to merely totalling up the first and second prizes and dividing them by two.

Thus El Toro and GeordieMagpie will get £75 each (£100 + £50 / 2) and GrandPooBah will get £25.

Well done guys. The new competition will start in a few week’s time.

Ladies and Gentlemen, as the end of the year draws nigh, so does the end of our current score prediction competition. It is currently reaching it’s thrilling climax with the top prizes still undecided even in the last game!

Anyway, this article is just to let you know if you don’t already, or need reminding, that a whole new series will be running from the new year until the end of the season.

With two games per season, that’s double the chance to win!

The huge, life changing cash prizes on offer will still be the same, ie £100 for the winner, £50 for the runner up and finally, £25 for third place.

The first games for the new competition will be taking place on Saturday 14th January 2012, but the the predictions will have to be in shortly before these games start, so don’t be late! One final thing is that all competitors will have to be registered members of the site so don’t forget to sign yourself up first too if you aren’t already a member. (more…)

Like winning the World Cup

News regarding the NUFC Blog prediction competition in relation to the Christmas/New Year fixture schedules.

GeordieMagpie and El Toro hold the number one and two league positions in our prediction competition, but with 4 sets of predictions still to go there’s still a lot of points up for grabs. There’s still scope for an exciting finale.

I do, however, need to clarify some things because they faff around with the fixtures lists a lot over Christmas and New Year, which means there’ll be some odd times by when you need to make sure you’ve done your predictions.

This weekend – Week 16 of the prediction competition – is a normal weekend and predictions need to be made by midday on Saturday (17th) as usual.

Week 17 covers the games on Tues 20th, Weds 21st and Thus 22nd of December and predictions for those games need to be completed by 19:00 on Tuesday 20th.

Week 18 covers the games on Mon 26th and Tues 27th December and predictions for those games need to be completed by midday on Monday 26th December.

Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle United League Cup match banter! (And competition update)

September 20th, 2011 | 200 Comments |

Nottingham Forest v Newcastle United, League Cup.
Third away trip in a row.
Venue: City Ground, Nottingham
Date: Tuesday, Sept 20th, 2011
Kick-off: 7:45pm
Referee: Lee Mason

Hello, good evening and welcome to NUFC Blog’s match banter feature for this evening’s League Cup encounter with Nottingham Forest at their place.

Forest have been struggling of late under former England manager and Dutch accent specialist, Steve “Wally with the brolly” McClaren, with the former double European cup winners languishing in the bottom three of the Championship table. However, before we get arrogant, it should not be forgotten that League One relegation candidates, Scunthorpe, really gave we Magpies a run for our money in the last round of this competition, with only an extra time goal separating the the sides in what was a very close contest. Don’t forget that for a more in depth look at the upcoming game, you can always check out Jimbob’s excellent match preview.
