Chris Hughton post match interview.

Post match interviews from Chris Hughton and Blackpool manager, Ian Holloway, following The Magpies’ desperately disappointing 0-2 home defeat to the Tangerines earlier today.

At this point I was going to work in some joke about us being ‘Tango’d’ or somesuch, but it looks like Toonsy got there first in his match report. Let’s hope we have more luck against the Toffees next time! (more…)

Mags v Tangerines, this time it's Premiership!
Welcome to the NUFC Blog match banter for today’s home encounter against Blackpool with your’s truly, Workyticket, standing in once again. As usual, for more in depth pre match stuff, you can always check out Toonsy’s excellent match preview, and the maiden article from new NUFC Blog recruit, Paul Reece, with his “Top Ten facts and stats to know about Blackpool F.C.

Last time we faced the seasiders of Blackpool at home, promotion from the Championship was assured and there was something of a party atmosphere. However, it should not be forgotten that Blackpool were one of the few teams to beat us last term in the earlier fixture at their place, Bloomfield Road.

Seen by some as the Donkeys of the Premiership, it also shouldn’t be forgotten that the Seasiders have already won a resounding 0-4 away victory at Wigan, something United manager, Chris Hughton was quick to point out in a pre match interview as he warned against complacency. He said: (more…)

Does Hughton deserve a new contract?

Hughton - To sign or not to sign?
Hughton - To sign or not to sign?
Most of us are aware that our current manager only has a contract that will take him until the end of the season.

He is paid peanuts (reportedly £5,000 a week) in comparison to most, if not all, Premier League managers, yet he just does what he always does and gets on with the job in hand.

There is no doubt that Chris Hughton has been just what the doctor ordered to calm down the mad house that was Newcastle United. He won the Championship last year at a canter and has brought a calmness and togetherness to Newcastle that hasn’t been seen on Tyneside for many a year. He has worked within a small budget and got the best the players he could with what was available, and he seems to be in a position where the vast majority of fans are backing him. So surely it would make sense to tie him down to a new contract now, wouldn’t it? (more…)

A strangely formidable partnership?
A strangely formidable partnership?
Newcastle seem to be getting the hang of this transfer window malarkey, as evidenced by the way business has been done in the last two transfer windows.

It is just my opinion, but I would class the last two transfer windows as a success, and that success has been achieved without the club spending a fortune.

I think that by now most fans are aware that the days of signing stupidly overpriced players, like the Mackems did with Asamoah Gyan, are behind us. That is fair enough, but the club must make make sure that they don’t go too far in the other direction and end up not spending enough to improve the squad. (more…)

One Chrissy Hughton….

Hughton - A crowd favourite?
Hughton - A crowd favourite?
Chris Hughton has had to endure some critics ever since he became manager of Newcastle United, but the number of critics is most definately reducing.

Talking to fans in the stand at Molineux yesterday, there seemed to be a growing respect for the man that has overseen somewhat of a transformation at Newcastle in the last 12 months or so.

There is now a bond that seems to be forming between Hughton and the fans, and that was echoed by the chants of ‘One Chrissy Hughton’ from the stands, a chant that Hughton duly acknowledged by giving a wave. The groundwork for this bond was set last season as he led us to promotion, a 102 point haul, and The Championship trophy. He really couldn’t have done much more last year, but he still had to prove to some fans that he could cut it as a Premier League manager. He seems to be making a good fist of it thus far. (more…)
