Khizanishvili is coming to Toon.
In the wake of Newcastle’s pummeling by the frisky Tangerines on Wednesday, United’s manager, Chris Hughton, has drafted in Blackburn’s benchwarming defender, Zurab Khizanishvili (try saying that without sounding inebriated).

He will be arriving, like previous loanee, Danny Simpson, on a three month loan deal, and is widely expected to slip straight into the squad to face Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

Whilst struggling to get a place in the first team at Blackburn this season, Khizanishvili is a highly experienced international for his home country, Georgia, with no less than 62 caps. He signed for Blackburn from Rangers three years ago for a modest £500,000.

Speaking of his new aquisition, Chris Hughton said:

“Zurab is an experienced defender and we’re very pleased to get him on board.

“He knows English football very well and will be a valuable addition to the squad.”

  1. Good signing. A centre back was a priority and I dare say Zurab will be better than Cathcart. Cathcart didn’t look big enough to be a centre back. Hopefully a winger or two will follow.

  2. Coincidentally, Viktor Hambardzumyan, one of the founders of theoretical astrophysics is, like Zurab, from Tbilisi.

  3. A very good addition to the squad , has experience at the highest level of the game . Hopefully we will get another striker and at least one more defender in soon

  4. He was thought of highly when in scotland, not sure how well he’s played since joining blackburn.

    So was Jean Alain Boumsong….

Although I find it hard to believe he won’t be better than him.

He’ll do ok in this division. I hope….

  6. You’re getting a decent player here. Zurab is definately premiership quality he’s just unfortunate we have other, marginally better defenders ahead of him. Always does a good job with the minimum of fuss.

  7. Cheers UJN, got this feedback from my pal (a Rovers fan) – “Zurab will be an absolute star in the Championship, mate. He’s never let Rovers down at either centre back or full back but, unfortunately for him, he’s always had someone just in front of him in the pecking order. When he’s played for Georgia he has consistently been their best player. I think that he’ll really enjoy playing in the North East. He’s an ugly bastard so he’ll settle in quickly and feel at home in no time, I’m sure. If he could put on a few stones he’d pass for a local.”

So good craic so far about him, on three then – “Give me a K…….”

  8. Replica Shirts for this guy only available in XXL, it’s the only size that they can get his name to fit across.
