Blackpool 2 Newcastle 1 – like taking candy floss from a baby!

No fun at the fair for Toon fans tonight!
No fun at the fair for Toon fans tonight!
Just when you thought we’d turned some sort of corner, Blackpool go and ‘tango’ us. Well admittedly, I had to rely on the eyes of the commentating duo of Mick Lowes and John Anderson but the performance sounded as bleak as the conditions and there was nothing pleasurable about the trip to this beach. And the 2-1 reverse, might well have spoiled the plans of some Mags intent on North West revelling.

The first half sounded pretty much all Blackpool as we struggled to contain a busy and industrious side, clearly willing to take the game to us. Boasting forward players with top flight experience in Brett Omerod, Jason Euell and Bouazza, there was always a risk of conceding and with former Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam driving the team from the middle, a goal seemed inevitable after Blackpool spurned a number of chances, including a disallowed goal by Bouazza, for offside.

And so the goal came, but against the run of play and in our favour. Andy Carroll, on his return to the first team, rose to meet a great cross from Danny Guthrie to make it 1-0 with little time left before the half-time whistle, just as Ando had predicted may happen. And that’s probably how most people expected it to stay but after parrying a shot from Adam, Harper was unable to prevent Ormerod finishing the rebound and the sides went into the interval all square.

Newcastle fans probably expected, or at least hoped, for a shake-up at half-time but it appeared to be much of the same in the second half with Blackpool having more of the play. And that resulted in what turned out to be the winner when, after failing to clear, the defence couldn’t stop a Jason Euell drive making it 2-1 to Blackpool. Hughton made changes to try and get us back in the game but despite Nile Ranger having a chance cleared off the line, this was all too easy for the home side and they went to pick up a deserved three points.

Time to dust ourselves down and get back on that bucking bronco they call The Championship, I reckon. Incidentally, Tony Green made an appearance on the pitch at half-time.

  1. p**s poor tonight,we got we deserved nothing, chris houghton has to desist from this 4,5,1 crap.
we should be going to blackpool to have a go,first half we were not at the races, apart from the goal.
when we went 2-1 down,we just didn,t seem to have a clue how to get back into the game.
how many times were we caught offside, giving away needless freekicks, when we were running out of time.
ranger was unlucky towards the end,but all in all not good enough.

  2. From my audio of the game, it sounded like that Bouazza was on fire and having it off to me. He seemed to be causing many of the problems, though I may be wrong of course with such limited information.

  3. Still a great match and a great place to go out on the town afterwards with win or no win, I’ll still be getting hammered!
