Sow: unlikely IMHO.Newcastle United are allegedly ‘linked’ with three players at the moment if various press reports are to be believed, although it is perhaps our continued interest on Modibo Maiga that is the strongest rumour.
You’d be forgiven for thinking the transfer window is still open judging by the players the press have Newcastle United linked with.
The Daily Mail has a minimalist report about our interest in Leicester City’s Jeffrey Schlupp, who is an 18 year old German-Ghanaian striker/left winger/left back. Schlupp has been signed up to Leicester since his youth days and has only made 18 senior league appearances, 10 of which were while he was on loan to Brentford. But he has scored 11 goals in those 18 games, which is an impressive start.
The Mail reports this in it’s usual omniscient way so there’s no proof that we’re interested in Schlupp at all, although if we are I’d presume he’s one ‘for the future’ so to speak. (more…)
January target?Newcastle United a reputed to be looking to strengthen things at right-back with Manchester City’s Nedum Onuoha allegedly being in the frame for a January transfer.
I’m not entirely sure where the rumour came from originally, but there’s one on a mild simmer about us being in the market for a new right-back.
Actually, come to think of it, it probably started when Danny Simpson was allegedly on the verge of signing a new contract earlier in the summer but for some reason didn’t. Simpson is contracted with us until the summer of 2013 and has been the subject of the occasional bit of transfer speculation, although nothing substantial enough to class our need as ‘desperate’.
Whether Simpson stays or goes, though, I can in fact see the need. We seem somewhat short of defenders just now and I think the right-back position could do with some more competition. Come to think of it, our defence could do with a few more numbers in general. A couple of injuries could easily put us in the mire and the fullback positions in particular seem to be undermanned. Besides Simpson and Santon, I guess there’s always Perch, and both the Taylors can fill in at fullback in an emergency, but I would hardly call that ‘depth’. (more…)
Cisse tops the rumour-millTransfer deadline day leaves Newcastle United in desperate need of at least a striker and Papiss Demba Cisse currently leads the rumours in that respect.
It’s transfer deadline day and hopefully we’ll have something to look forward to by way of a new striker. Whether we’re after anything more than that remains to be seen but, either way, try not to wet your pants in all the excitement.
Just to recap as to where we are as of 08:00 on the 2011 summer transfer deadline day:
First-Team Players Out : Kuqi, Ireland, Campbell, Nolan, Routledge, Enrique, Barton and of course Carroll back in January (and Forster if you want to count that).
Most likely optionErik Pieters’ alleged move to Newcastle United appears to be dead in the water, interest in Aly Cissokho is cooling, so Davide Santon seems the most likely to be our new left-back.
It seems press reports that Erik Pieters is ‘close’ to joining Newcastle are wide of the mark if the Dutch press is anything to go by.
Various Dutch newspapers are reporting that Pieters will stay at PSV after talks with Newcastle broke down last week.
It’s seems that a disagreement about transfer conditions was at the heart of the problem, although some of the press are suggesting that, because the talks were dragging on, PSV withdrew anyway because they would not be able to find anyone to replace Pieters at this late stage in the transfer window.
Pieters’ agent, Piet van der Pol, said: “PSV will not sell Peter.” (more…)
From Inter to Newcastle for £5m?With talk of Davide Santon to Newcastle seeming ever likely, the obvious question is where will he fit into the squad?
The 20 year old started plying his trade on the wing and gradually moved back to his current position as full back, or to be more precise, wing back and despite being right footed, can play on either flank and is always willing to terrorise both defenders and attackers with his raw pace.
You’ll all be glad to know that unlike most Italian players, this lad actually has strength and doesn’t go down screaming about how the wind knocked him off the ball and how it should be red carded for violent conduct. So there’s a bonus.
Of course, the title is a little bit sensationalist – he could walk into the squad in either full back position and he probably knows it. He fits into the continental style of right footers on the left wing and vice verse and as far as I know he could very well prefer the left flank – that is, after all, where he gets the most games.
