Tiote, Cabaye, Maiga, Giroud? How will we look after January?

Will Tiote be at Newcastle after January 2011?
What's the odds of him staying at the Toon?
Reflections on Saturday’s game and a look ahead at what might and might not be happening in the January transfer window as far as Newcastle United is concerned.

How did we not win that game on Saturday? Swansea have one of the best defences in the league but luck was certainly on their side too, particularly in the first half where we were totally dominant throughout. I suppose it’s a case of what goes around comes around – I’ll be the first to admit we rode our luck a lot in the first half a dozen games this season.

The return of Colo was welcome and I thought he was fantastic on Saturday. Likewise I was impressed with Santon and Jonas. As to Obertan, Alan Pardew has been springing to his defence after he noticed the crowd getting on his case a bit. Pardew said:

That’s a bit harsh. Because he is so quick you always want him bursting down the outside. I thought he played well first half. He created three or four situations for us. He is a player who has only played 14 Premier League games, he is learning, his discipline was much better defensively but when you get a 0-0, there can be frustration from the crowd.

Overall, I though the crowd was very positive and I thank them for that. Yes, we want to win. We want the possibility of the top six. Don’t make me think I am happy with the draw.(more…)

Toon linked with three players

Moussa Sow allegedly linked to Newcastle United.
Sow: unlikely IMHO.
Newcastle United are allegedly ‘linked’ with three players at the moment if various press reports are to be believed, although it is perhaps our continued interest on Modibo Maiga that is the strongest rumour.

You’d be forgiven for thinking the transfer window is still open judging by the players the press have Newcastle United linked with.

The Daily Mail has a minimalist report about our interest in Leicester City’s Jeffrey Schlupp, who is an 18 year old German-Ghanaian striker/left winger/left back. Schlupp has been signed up to Leicester since his youth days and has only made 18 senior league appearances, 10 of which were while he was on loan to Brentford. But he has scored 11 goals in those 18 games, which is an impressive start.

The Mail reports this in it’s usual omniscient way so there’s no proof that we’re interested in Schlupp at all, although if we are I’d presume he’s one ‘for the future’ so to speak. (more…)

Erding, Sow, Gomez? Just who is the mystery striker?

Erding may be on Newcastle's wish list.
Erding - mystery striker maybe?
Newcastle United are allegedly planning a ‘mega-bid’ for some ‘mystery striker’, but who could it be?

That idea of ‘mega-bids’ and ‘mystery strikers’ does sound like The Sun is spicing up the story a bit. Having said that though, it’s probably true within reason. We certainly need a striker and there’s no denying that it’s currently a mystery as to who that might be, and ‘mega-bid’ is a woolly term that could mean anything. One man’s mega-bid is another man’s cheese sandwich as they say (although not often).

I would therefore suggest that The Sun’s story is completely true for once.

It’s up to us to try and guess who this mystery striker might be though.

About 10 days ago I picked up some rumblings in the foreign press about our potential interest in Melvut Erding (or Mevlüt Erdinç if you like) and I still think he’s a likely candidate.

The 24 year-old Turkish striker plays for Paris Saint-Germain and has 22 goals in 51 games for them. He has also played 10 games for Turkey, getting the ball in the net once. (more…)
