Has been a key player for us.Having already taken a look at our goalkeepers and defenders, the focus for the next edition of our player review moves up the pitch again to see how our midfield have performed throughout the season.
It’s been a strange position for us this year. On one hand, some say the midfield has been our achilles heel, it lacks mobility and creativity. On the other hand though, it has been a position that has yielded a return of 30 goals from the season. Without checking, that is probably a damn sight more than what we have had in return from the past few seasons. Of course 17 of them have come from Kevin Nolan which has helped improve that figure, but despite the criticism that has been aimed at them from time to time they have chipped in with their fair share of assists aswell. After all, strikers need service from somewhere, right? (more…)
Part of the Fab four! It’s that time of the season where awards start getting dished out, both to recognise personal achievements and team achievements throughout the season.
We have already had Kevin Nolan named as the Championship Player of the Year, but last night it was time to announce the PFA Championship Team of the Year. The PFA awards were held at a glittering ceremony in London, and whilst Wayne Rooney must be pleased to have walked of with the PFA Player of the Year award, it doesn’t really interest me so much. What does interest me is the Championship Team of the year, which turns out features four players from Newcastle United this season. They are Fabricio Coloccini (as pictured), Jose Enrique, Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll. (more…)

Chris Hughton: The sixth manager to gain promotion for NUFC.On the event of Newcastle United’s promotion to the Premier League, I decided to take a look at some of the statistics of Newcastle United’s season in the Coca Cola Championship, and here are some of the results.
Chris Hughton is the sixth manager in Newcastle United’s history to acheive promotion into the top tier of English football. The first was Frank Watt and the Newcastle United Selection Committee of 1892-1929. Watt was the longest serving and most successful manager in Newcastle United’s history, though his teams were selected by commitee. The full list is below.
1897-8: Frank Watt and the Newcastle United Selection Committee 1947-8: George Martin 1965-66: Joe Harvey 1983-84: Arthur Cox 1993-4: Kevin Keegan 2009-10: Chris Hughton (more…)
Carroll: "Raring to go for Palace".Good words today coming from two of our players, Andy Carrol and Kevin Nolan, with both of them saying the best thing to get over a defeat is another game, and that comes in the shape of Newcastle United’s home encounter with Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening.
Both lads are understandably annoyed with being eliminated from the FA Cup on Saturday, but are determined that it won’t affect The Toon’s promotion push and are seeking to use the defeat as a springboard to pick up the teams league form. Scouse Nolan said:
“Going out (of the cup) is a blow, but we can only look to our next game.”
“The fans were great at West Brom and that can only drive us on, as can this result.”
“We are still top of the league and we’ve got to finish off the job. This can inspire us to do that. We’re going for it.”
With the injury to Shola Ameobi, the onus could now be on Andy Carroll to help score the goals to keep us top of the league. His 2 goals on Saturday were excellent, and could be just the confidence boost the Gateshead born hitman has needed. Speaking of ending his 3 month goal drought, Carroll said: (more…)
