Lovenkrands: Hoping for a place. On the eve of Newcastle United’s League Cup clash with Arsenal, Newcastle United striker, Peter Lovenkrands, has been hailing the stylish passing play of the North London giants, likening them to Barcelona. However, the great Dane still thinks that victory is possible, especially after the Magpies’ scintillating 4-3 victory against the mighty Chelsea in the last round. Another one against the “Gooners” would mean a place in the Quarter Finals.
Lovenkrands said of Arsenal:
“They are the team who come closest to the passing game of Barcelona, it’s a similar style with the same kind of players like Fabregas, who can pass like Iniesta or Xavi.”
On what it’s like to actually play against them, Lovenkrands added:
“I’d pay to watch them because it’s so exciting, but it’s not too much fun playing against Arsenal when you’re running about after them. It’s a matter of trying to get hold of the ball first and if we can play like we did at Chelsea, you never know.”
Thanks to manager, Chris Hughton’s seeming preference for big target men such Andy Carroll and Shola Ameobi over swift gundogs such as Lovenkrands, it has been a lean time in terms of first team action for the Dane recently, however the League Cup has provided an opportunity for him to get some more time in, however it is still unknown whether he will feature for the Magpies tomorrow evening. Winners!Newcastle played out an entertaining pre-season encounter with Deportivo la Coruna in Spain this evening, and walked away with some silverware for their efforts.
In an enjoyable yet even match it was Newcastle who triumphed and took the Teresa Herrera trophy back to Tyneside with them, although admittedly it took a penalty shoot-out to seperate the two sides after they played out a 0-0 draw in the 90 minutes.
There was a fair amount of positives to come out of this evenings games, and the performance in general left me personally feeling satisfied as we head off to Rangers on Saturday. Joey Barton, sporting his porn effect moustache, impressed with Danny Guthrie in the middle, Fabricio Coloccini was a rock in defence, Leon Best and Andy Carroll made themselves a nuisance up front, and in general we kept the ball quite well at times. Newcastle need backup for these two.At the moment, all the rumours seem to be surrounding players such as Dan Gosling and Tom Cleverley.
The problem for me is that both of those are midfield players, and in my opinion we should be making signing a striker a priority. Now it’s only speculation surrounding those two players, but they are both tipped to move to Newcastle soon if you believe what you read in the press.
That is all very good and what not, but what happens at the business end of the pitch? Who is going to put the ball in the back of the net? We need to score goals to survive in the Premier League. Do I have faith in the players that we have at the minute being able to do that? Yes and no is my answer, which is obviously confusing so let me explain a bit more. (more…)
Carroll and Lovenkrands - The deadly duo?Well there isn’t much in the way of news as yet today, so I have decided to take a look at just how some of our players may fare in the Premier League next season.
I think it’s widely percieved that the squad at least needs depth added to it, so for a change I wont be looking at what players we may or may not get in, or indeed whether we are going to spend money or not.
What we can have a look at is what we have in the squad right now, and why not start with having a look at our strikers? Andy Carroll and Peter Lovenkrands have been rather impressive throughout the Championship campaign, and the pair of them have forged quite an effective partnership up front for Newcastle scoring 35 goals between them. The big man/little man combination seems to be working, and it’s an understanding that can only get better in my opinion. (more…)
Hmm, where to strenghten?Whilst I was at work doing various bits and bobs, my mind started wandering. Not on to mucky stuff for once, but about Newcastle and how we should go about strengthening the team.
After all, as football fans we all reckon we know what would be best, and I am no different. The real problem I had with deciding on where to strengthen the team was trying choose whether I should decide with my head, or with my heart, the difference between the two could be millions of pounds! So anyway, after some more musing I decided to use my head. My heart wants us to sign players that will see us finish comfortably mid-table, and perhaps beyond. I would love it if that was the case, but then my brain kicked in and I realised that the players needed to finish so high up the league will be well out the reach of our alleged budget. (more…)
