The Gallowgate - Soon be sporting three new signs. There has been a bit of a storm brewing at St James’ Park over the last few weeks, and it is six advertising boards that have been the in the eye of it.
Controversial plans to stick some advertising signs to the side of the St James’ Park were given the go ahead yesterday despite the plans attracting more that 23,700 objections, including objections from as far a field as Malaysia.
But now Newcastle City Council have agreed the planning application submitted bby the club which will see three new signs attached to the Milburn Stand and another three signs attached to St James’ Park on the outside of the Gallowgate End with the long term aim being to increase commercial revenue coming into the club. Fortress St James'.It may well sound like an obvious statement to make, but if ever a more obvious statement has been so vaild then I would like to see it.
We now know what the fixtures are for next season, we now know that it is Manchester United away on the first day of the season, again, and we know that it is highly unlikely that we will take any points away from Old Trafford and back to Tyneside, but stranger things have happened.
Realistically, a vast amount of our away games next season will be defeats, although that is not unusual for us in the Premier League. We may get a few draws, even the odd win, but deep down I think most of us now that a lot of the hard work is going to have to be done in the cathedral on the hill that is St James’ Park, which is why my initial annoyance at the way the fixtures panned out has been replaced by a careful optimism after I realised that we have no real back to back fixtures against the top teams as it stands, which is good. Bank owned @ St James' Park?Things never run smoothly at Newcastle do they? Come on, you can admit it, it’s ok. And some interesting revelations today have ensured that the tradition unfortunately continues.
The Guardian have managed to track down some of the inner workings of what is going on behind the iron curtain, with the focus yet again being on the financial side of the club.
In quite stunning fashion, The Guardian have revealed that Newcastle no longer own St James’ Park, or the training ground, or the youth academy. They have also revealed that all the money owed to us from the sale of players such as James Milner and Obafemi Martins has already been borrowed against and is due to be repaid as and when we recieve it. Our magnificent support.Manager Chris Hughton has today called on the Newcastle fans to help push the team over the finishing line, starting on Monday when we go head to head against promotion rivals Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park..
Nottingham Forest have sold out their ticket allocation for the top of the table clash and the sheer importance of the game should mean that Newcastle have a crowd near to 50,000. Whether it will be enough to topple our record of 49,644 set against Middlebrough earlier in the season remains to be seen but either way an electric atmosphere can be expected. The only reasons I expect this game to not sell out are because of the Monday evening kick off and because of live Sky TV coverage. That said though, a crowd of around 50,000 on a Monday night will be magnificent and flies in the face of critics who claimed that we would struggle as crowds desert us. (more…)
'Fantastic'? St James Park.I’m not talking about this season, although life has been largely fantastic at St James’ Park which now boasts the only unbeaten home record in the football league. I’m talking more on the grander scheme of things, and the news today is that Newcastle United are ‘proud’ to announce a new sponsorship deal with a company called Fantastic Telecoms. Never heard of them? No, neither have I, however they are now the clubs “official telecoms partner”.
On the face of it, it doesn’t sound that bad. But when I read more into it, some alarm bells started ringing. Perhaps i’m reading too much into it? Perhaps the whole renaming debacle of a few months ago that touched a nerve with me has left me with some doubt as to just what the implications of this deal are?
Fantastic Telecom are part of the much larger MDS telecoms group, the deal will offer Newcastle United fans phone and broadband packages in a more cost effective way for the consumer. As an added sweetener, 10% of all subscriptions will be donated back to the club to invest in the youth setup. (more…)
