Highlights of today’s Newcastle United pre season friendly against Turkish Super Liga runners up, Fenerbahçe, at the Sonnenseestadion in Ritzing, Austria.
It was Newcastle United who opened the scoring, with youngster, Mehdi Abeid, cracking one off in the 76th minute. However Fenerbahçe drew level with an strike from Cristian just before the final whistle.

Hello, good evening and welcome to our latest “match banter” feature, which this time sees Newcastle United facing the Turkish giants of Fenerbahçe.
Known as the “Yellow Canaries” in their native Turkey, the Istanbul side, who were last years runners up in the Turkish Super Lig should provide a tough Turkish test for the Magpies in the run up to the Premiership (and Europa League) season.
For more background to the game, I prepared a pre season guide for Toon fans some time ago, however since the time of writing, the news has been that the venue has been changed from Káposztás Utcai Stadion in Sopron, Hungary, and will now be taking place at the Sonnenseestadion, Ritzing, Austria, which is the home of SC Ritzing. He scored two goals, narrowly missing out on a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory for the second string Mags.
Newcastle United’s club reporter, Dan King, wrote of the mystery Frenchman:
“Two well-taken goals from a French trialist helped Newcastle Reserves start their pre-season campaign with a win against an experienced Hamilton outfit at the Magpies’ Benton training ground.
“The teenage winger, who has played for his country at youth level, scored twice in the first-half and Marcus Maddison added a third from the penalty spot before Alister Crawford netted a late consolation for the Scottish First Division side, who beat Sunderland’s second-string 3-1 earlier this week and included a host of senior players. Good evening and welcome to our latest, and probably one of our last “match banter” features, this time for this evening’s pre season friendly against the millionaire playboys of AS Monaco, to be played at the Hacker-Pschoor Arena, Landsberg am Lech, Bavaria, Germany.
Although Monaco are fallen giants, having gone from being former Champions League finalists to being relegated from France’s Ligue 1 in 2011, like ourselves they now have another “Silver Supremo,” Claudio “Tinkerman” Rainieri to rescue their fortunes now, and this should provide a far stiffer test than our last pre season game against German third tier side, Chemnitzer. Having written that, the Saxon sausage munchers did beat us 1 – 0 in that game! However we should see more of the big guns trotting out for this one so we’ll see what happens. On the subject of big guns, one aging giant in the Monaco side will be 36 year old ex France midfielder, Ludovic Giuly, who has has enjoyed a glittering career at Lyon, Monaco, Barcelona, Roma and Paris St Germain, before he returned to Monaco for what will almost certainly be his last hurrah in 2011.
