Fenerbahçe vs Newcastle United
A tough Turkish test for the Magpies this evening!
Date: Saturday, 21st July.
Venue: Sonnenseestadion, Am Sportplatz 1, 7323 Ritzing, Austria.
Kick off: 7pm local time / 6pm UK time
Referee: Paul Petho.
UK TV: Live on ESPN UK.

Hello, good evening and welcome to our latest “match banter” feature, which this time sees Newcastle United facing the Turkish giants of Fenerbahçe.

Known as the “Yellow Canaries” in their native Turkey, the Istanbul side, who were last years runners up in the Turkish Super Lig should provide a tough Turkish test for the Magpies in the run up to the Premiership (and Europa League) season.

For more background to the game, I prepared a pre season guide for Toon fans some time ago, however since the time of writing, the news has been that the venue has been changed from Káposztás Utcai Stadion in Sopron, Hungary, and will now be taking place at the Sonnenseestadion, Ritzing, Austria, which is the home of SC Ritzing.

As with the previous pre season game against AS Monaco, this game will be televised live in the UK on ESPN, though as usual, I shall endeavour to post links to streams of the game for those who can’t get it.

Also as usual, I will also be posting the official team sheets for the game when they become available, as well as highlights when the game is over.

Howay the lads!

Team sheets

Fenerbahce(4-2-3-1): Mert Gunok (G), Orhan Sam, Bekir Irtegun, Serdar Kesimal, Hasan Ali Kaldirim; Mehmet Topal, Cristian Baroni; Dirk Kuyt, Alex De Souza (C), Miroslav Stoch, Moussa Sow.

Subs: Serkan Kirintili, Gokhan Gonul, Selcuk Sahin, Salih Ucan, Recep Niyaz, Caner Erkin, Semih Senturk, Ozer Hurmaci, Sezer Ozturk, Henri Bienvenu, Volkan Demirel, Mehmet Topuz.

Newcastle United (4-3-3): Rob Elliot (G), Danny Simpson, James Tavernier, Fabricio Coloccini (C), Ryan Taylor, Cheick Tiote, Dan Gosling, Gabriel Obertan, Haris Vuckic, Romain Amalfitano, Demba Ba.

Subs: Steve Harper (G), Davide Santon, Mike Williamson, Mehdi Abeid, Gael Bigirimana, Sylvain Marveaux, Jonas Gutierrez, Shola Ameobi, Sammy Ameobi, Papiss Cisse.

* Apperently, Romain Amalfitano has been injured in the pre match warm up, so Sylvain Marveaux will be starting instead.

It also seems that Papiss Cisse is on the bench too so I’ve added him to the original team sheet.

    Aye it has, GeordieDan, good to hear from you!

    Me too, though I still hate Richard Branson because of my broadband! It’s been OK recently though (touch wood).

  3. I feel your broadband pain mate.

    Wasted a good hour arguing with an Indian call centre last week when mine went off again. :#

    Its still about eleventythree times faster than any other option though (when it does work)so we can’t whinge to much. ;)

    The new season is coming! Starting to get excited now. :D

  4. Hi guy’s We normally pick up all the games on ATDHE. Their page is showing about 8 different streams for the game. Good for a 2-2 the neet. Happy hunting !HAWAAAAAAAAAAAAAY the lads.

  5. Hi Worky @6, wer’e off to Poland next week on a business holiday with a trip to Auschwitz thrown in. I suppose that for footballers who mostly live in their own little bubble until they retire, the rest of the world must pass them by somewhat, so as with the togetherness factor, it will be good to keep them grounded

  6. Yes Worky, A little thing entitled “Little Did I Know” coming shortly. Not too long but I think it may be interesting.

    “Bloody hell. A concentration camp?”

    Aye, lots of Dachau pics, but I’m still looking for a bloody team sheet!

    I’ve been to see Pol Pot’s camps and interrogation centre in Cambodia a few times.

  8. My missus is Polish and there’s a concentration camp – Majdanek (The one in The Reader) – in her home city. It’s just been left as it was, no audio guides, videos or even any info – there’s not even a gate, you just stroll right in. Amazingly powerful stuff, think even footballers would find it moving..

    On a lighter note, looking forward to this match – anyone know if Colo and Ben Arfa will be getting a run out today?

    (Great site btw!)

  9. Does anyone know if any of these streams work on an iPhone? At work and no other chance to see the game if not :(

  10. Rob Elliot;
    Danny Simpson, James Tavernier, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Ryan Taylor;
    Cheick Tiote, Dan Gosling;
    Gabriel Obertan, Haris Vuckic, Romain Amalfitano;
    Demba Ba

    “Does anyone know if any of these streams work on an iPhone?”

    I’m no expert on IFerns, StaffsToon, though you may need a video streaming app?

  12. BTW GeordieDan the Turkish season starts a day after the BPL so presume their preseason is similar to ours ?

    StaffsToon if your phone can play Flash streams then you could be OK ?

  13. I’m currently watching Birmingham v BM Gladbach (no de Jong) and that’s via Flash. Clarky’s got them playing well, theyre leading the Germans 2-1 with 10 minutes to go.

    Dunno….. They have a Champions League qualifier in ten days time so will probably want to make sure they are in fine fettle for that.

  15. Jimbob says:

    “Hmmm a 4-2-3-1”

    Good news bad news JB. Formation could work well but Obertan’s playing :).

    Cheers jt!

    To be fair, as you know, alot of players come from Africa nowadays, and though they may be on huge wages now, many of them have known stuff we can only imagine in the past.

    Colo’s in, Benny isn’t looking at the team sheets.

    “Looking forward to seeing Vuckic behind a lone striker.”

    I do hope he doesn’t keep getting broken again this season, Jimbob. He’s such a big, burly lad, yet he seems to break something every time he falls over!

  18. We are desperate for a CB Andy. Pardew said today 90% of games Ba will pay in the centre… So either it’s 4-4-2 for the season or maybe 4-2-3-1 with either Ba or Cisse behind the other… I still think 4-3-3 suits us but doubt Cisse will operate the left side.

  19. Yeah he does Worky, he seems to be made of glass! Very talented player though, just needs to stay fit and get a decent run in the side.

  20. Soz forgot subs

    Elliot;
    Simpson, Tavernier, Coloccini (c),Taylor;
    Tiote, Gosling;
    Obertan, Vuckic, Amalfitano;
    Demba Ba

    Steve Harper, Davide Santon, Mike Williamson, Mehdi Abeid, Gael Bigirimana, Sylvain Marveaux, Jonas Gutierrez, Shola Ameobi, Sammy Ameobi

    .cock saying

    “In a change of formation from their previous two fixtures of this tour, striker Demba Ba will lead the line on his own, and will be supported by wingers Gabriel Obertan and Romain Amalfitano.

    Cheick Tiote, Dan Gosling and Haris Vuckic will form a midfield trio, with the latter given licence to get forward and support Ba”

    So 4-3-3 or 4-5-1, pays yer money :)

  21. That’s a very good point workyticket, Ivory Coast and Senegal have seen their share of war in the last 20 years.

    Will be interesting to see how the effects of Ramadan pan out this year – I assume NUFC have complete control over what Ba and Cisse eat when the sun goes down – they must be trying to work out the best way to deal with it..

    Looking forward to seeing Colo back in action and getting surprisingl excited about this Koura fella..

    “6:30pm kick off? ESPN aren’t broadcasting till then, thought it was 6pm?”

    Jimbob, I saw the same things for 6PM all over, hence the timing above and for this post too. But then I saw one or two for 6.30pm and got all confused.

    It’s still Aussies in very tight shorts ATM. They all look like footballers from the early eighties.

  23. again .cock saying:

    “United skipper Fabricio Coloccini will start his first game of pre-season, as the Magpies face Fenerbahce tonight in Austria (7.30pm kick-off local time)”

    We had a long discussion about that last season, jt. In Islam, Muslims who are engaged in extremely strenuous professions may sometimes be excused from fasting over the period of Ramadan, which should include being a footballer at the highest levels. But it’s something of a moot point I suppose.

  25. Must have missed that – did Ba take advantage of that last year? I guess not.. They seem to be pretty devout Muslim, does that affect their ability to opt out?

    “That’s a very good point workyticket, Ivory Coast and Senegal have seen their share of war in the last 20 years.”

    The residents of the country now known as D.R. Congo, and also the areas surrounding it have almost certainly had it worse than any other area in modern history. It’s been like a non stop holocaust there most of the time since the days of Prince Leopold of Belgium in the late 19th Century. He was as bad as Hitler, and the country has been destroyed by the worst wars since the Second World War since the days of Belgian slavery too.

    “Must have missed that – did Ba take advantage of that last year?”

    Apparently not jt, though I am a keen student of Islam and I consulted with some very devout Muslims about it too.

    Amalfitano injured in warm up so Marv is starting now.

    Thanks Phisix, I’ll stick in a note about that.

  29. Did not know that about the Belgians!

    It’s ooooooooon! (the match, not some retribution for Belgian crimes)

  30. Really dont want us to pay 20 mill for carrol,and I dont want to see obertan in a newcastle shirt.

  31. Phisix says:

    “Im warming to the home shirt now. when is it released for sale?”

    I think it’s been delayed until the eigth of next month, Phisix, if my memory serves me well (which it usually doesn’t!)

  32. Nice one Worky. I had a look online yesterday for a date but I could not find any information about it. First day buy for me this season like, especially after losing a stone in weight.

  33. Gosling has been pretty bad/not involved. I am, however, impressed with Tavernier. I did not expect him to be a competent center back at this level yet.

  34. How did you manage that weight loss Phisix ? Well done btw.

    As for Vukcic I’m sorry but I think he’s almost as bad as Obertan :(

  35. Cutting junk food out of my day to day living and eating a bit healthier. Add that to a gym me and my mate bought and set up in his garage for use 4 days a week and thats how much I lost in 6 weeks. Just need to lose one more stone before I can start building muscles.

    No large Toon top this season ;)

  36. We need to stamp out these long balls to goal and long ball clearances in defence.

  37. Actually think Gosling has been tidy. Vuckic looks off and Obertan is ripping that right wing as usual…

  38. How close is that Fererbache team to being full strength? We have seven regular starters missing today.

  39. Assuming he’s supporting Ba, Vuckic has done very little supporting :)

    Gosling never seems to time headers and Obertan spends more time running into space than running with the ball :(

  40. Jimbob says:

    “How close is that Fererbache team to being full strength? We have seven regular starters missing today”

    Point well made JB but surely this is an opportunity for those “fringe” players to show their worth ?. Unfortunately for every game he plays Obertan must be giving Pardwho another ulcer :)

  41. Impressed with Tavernia. Very composed. The whole backline has been good. Tiote is outstanding. Vuckic doesn’t look right. I think his natural game is to play behind the strike force and not part of it. Obertan is frustrating. Marveaux is quiet. Ba is trying but misses the service.

    Would like see Bigirimana again as he looks terrific for someone so young. Also like to see Abeid. I can see Jonas, Shola and Sammy coming on.

    Andy, he’s an excellent player, though he’s obviously very rusty with so many injuries and close season and all that.

    We’ll agree to disagree WT. I see him being loaned out before very long. Agree about Tav though, the various loan spells seem to have helped his confidence no end !

  44. Vukic needs more games,gosling is shite,we tryed to get rid of him,but were unlucky,we need extra bodys in fast,injured in the warm up…here we go.

  45. Another advert…this is taking the piss. Anyone got a link thats not on adverts?

    “Its over Worky”

    I was typing that just as the referee was putting the whistle in his gob, Phisix.

  47. Entertaining for a pre-season game. Sammi looks a talent. We need another goalie, Eliot looked uncomfortable all game, bad positioning and never came for a cross.

  48. Played some decent stuff today. Sammy looked sharp and Tav did well. Need additions though.

  49. Another good work out. Plusses were Tiote as usual, Colo and Cisse with their first games, Tav and Bigi. Abeid took his goal very well so hopefully that’ll give him confidence and Sammy showed nice touches.

  50. Yup GS he doesnt look comfortable and was lucky no one connected with Alex’s cross. Others need to step it up too and Obertan needs to go on loan somewhere just so he can remember what it was like to have a decent games !

  51. The young ones, Tavernia, Abeid, Bigi (Tiote’s love child?) and Sammy all looked good. Vuckic didn’t look right in that upfront position. Obertan was his usual frustrating self. Marveaux was dissapointingly quiet. Gosling tried hard but will always be second fiddle to others. Santon seems to have shrugged off his sluggishness. Cisse looked back to where he left off last season. Ba tried hard but got little support or service. Tiote was outstanding. Shola was rusty. The defence was good but I’m not sure about Elliot.

  52. We looked pretty good in the 2nd half I thought. Sammy Ameobi and Cisse looked particularly good I thought… Got to say Obertan looked just as dodgy as he did for much of last season but it’s still early pre season so i’ll give the benefit of the doubt.

  53. “The young ones,”

    ♫ Shouldn’t be afraid… ♫

    Only those over 60 will know what you mean Worky. Those who want to sing along:

    The young ones,
    Darling we’re the young ones,
    And young ones shouldn’t be afraid.

    To live, love
    While the flame is strong,
    for we won’t be the young ones very long.

    Tomorrow,
    why wait till tomorrow,
    Tomorrow sometimes never comes.
    Love, me,
    there’s a song to be sung
    And the best time is to sing while we’re young.

    Once in every lifetime
    comes a love like this.
    I need you and you need me.
    Oh my darling can’t you see.
    Young dreams
    Should be dreamed together,
    Young hearts shouldn’t be afraid.
    And some day when the years have flown
    Darling, this will teach the young ones of our own.
    The young ones
    Darling, we’re the young ones
    The young ones
    Darling, we’re the young ones.

    I’m nowhere near 60 Kamar, and I know what I mean! Most people my age know it as the theme to an anarchic sitcom.
