Campbell lays into fans over ‘fat’ jibes.

'Big' Sol Campbell.
'Big' Sol Campbell.
Sol Campbell was acting the big angry bear today as he took the chance to lambast some fans who had labelled him as ‘fat’.

The sensitive soul pulled no punches in his criticism, calling those people who targetted him ‘idiots’ and ‘pathetic’. Quite right too, as most people will understand that Sol Campbell is a few weeks behind everyone else in the race for fitness, aside from a few it seems. But lets not forget the double standards with which the media are reporting this story with.

Yesterday, The Mirror branded Campbell ‘Blobby’ in a headline whilst The Sunday Express once again lay into fans by proclaiming that we are ‘getting on his back before he has even kicked a ball for us’. The second one has a small amount of truth in it, but I assume it is fine for The Mirror to lambast us whilst labelling Sol ‘Blobby’? Once again, the press have decided to take a pop at the fans using any old excuse. Sol Campbell is a wise head and can look after himself without the need for press interferance, as is highlighted below. (more…)

Skipper’s armband still up for grabs.

Who gets the privilege?
Who gets the privilege?
The Newcastle captaincy is still up for grabs for this season, but who will be the likely heir to the captains armband?

The full-time club captain is yet to be named although it seems likely that either Alan Smith or Kevin Nolan will get the honour of the captaincy this season.

The next captain won’t be Sol Campell anyway, as Chris Hugton has ruled out that particular avenue, so that leaves us with options that are within our current squad, which isn’t a bad move in my opinion.

“I can categorically say that Sol will not be captain,” Hughton told The Chronicle. “I can completely rule that out and there is no truth in the talk that he will skipper this season. That is still to be confirmed.” (more…)

Steven Taylor out for 3 months.

Taylor - Out for 3 months.
Taylor - Out for 3 months.
It has been confoirmed today that Newcastle defender Steven Taylor will be sidelined for three months with the shoulder injury sustained at Carlisle nearly two weeks back.

It’s a huge blow for both the player and the team as Newcastle look to use this season to consolidate their place in the Premier League, although the signing of Sol Campbell has cushioned the blow a bit, for me anyway.

This is the latest setback for Taylor in what is turning out to be his ‘annus horribilis’. It all started back in January when he injured his knee against West Brom which forced him to miss most the remainer of the season. Then there was the infamous ‘Glassjawgate’ affair in which Taylor allegedly recieved a broken jaw in a training ground dust-up, now add this latest injury to the list and we have a central defender that has only made two appearances this year due to this horrendously bad luck with injuries. Sol Campbell signs on for one year at Newcastle.

Sol signs 1 year deal.
Sol signs 1 year deal.
Newcastle have today confirmed that they have secured the services of 35-year old Sol Campbell on a one year deal.

Campbell will take the previously vacant number 5 jersey and will bring with him a whole host of experience that will hopefully help Newcastle establish themselves back in the top flight.

Although Campbell is appraoching the end of his playing career it still looks like it could be a good move for Newcastle. For me, Campbell proved he can still play at Premier League level last season with Arsenal, and the fact that Arsene Wenger was apparently keen to get Sol to sign on at The Emirates again should be a decent sign that he could have another top flight season left in his tank. Campbell - Tooning in at Newcastle?
Campbell - Tooning in at Newcastle?
It looks like Sol Campbell could finally be a Newcastle player as reports suggest that the defender is to undergo a medical at the club this afternoon.

There have been strong rumours about the the 35-year former England international and a move to Newcastle throughout the summer, although the rumours have cooled recently.

In fact the last thing I heard was that Campbell was going back to Arsenal for this season, so something has changed along the way, but what? We’ll probably find out tommorrow as that is when Sol should be confirmed as a Newcastle player, providing everything goes to plan with his medical of course. (more…)
