Sod England. This is bad news for Newcastle!

Carroll out of England action.
Carroll out of England action.
Andy Carroll’s England debut looks to be on hold as the Gateshead lad withdrew from the national team with a groin injury.

It’s a blow for Carroll, who has deserved to be called up to the national team, but it is an even bigger blow to Newcastle who will now be without the striker for an unconfirmed amount of time.

I’m guessing a couple of weeks at least, but you all know how good, or not, my guesswork is!

Carroll is a very important player for Newcastle, but there was always a chance that he would get injured at some point. Now we will see what we can do without him, but at this moment in time I don’t feel too good about it. It’s not just the goals that we will miss from Carroll. His all round play and the fact that he worries opposition defenders will also be a big miss. (more…)

Carroll rewarded for fine form with England selection.

Andy Carroll. England's number 9?
Andy Carroll. England's number 9?
Andy Carroll has been playing excellently for Newcastle this season, which is fantastic for us to be honest.

Speculation had been circulating suggesting that Carroll could be rewarded for his good form with a call up to England, and for once that speculation appears to be true and Carroll has indeed been called up by Capello.

I’m really happy for the lad as his performances on the pitch have warranted him getting a call up, and it will show Carroll that if he keeps performing on the pitch then he will, hopefully, get rewarded by playing for his country.

That is the way it should work in fairness, but it hasn’t always been the case with the England team and players have been picked on reputation rather than form before.

Carroll will need to be aware that the spotlight will be on him now, more than ever in fact, which is why it is important that Carroll really starts to think about his behaviour on the pitch. An England call up could make him realise that he needs to change, which is what Capello is aiming for. (more…)

Will Capello give Carroll the nod?

Psst... Carroll. He wants you!
Psst... Carroll. He wants you!
The man of the moment, for many reasons, seems to be Andy Carroll. For every negative headline that has circulated around the Gateshead lad, a positive one has closely followed.

And things could get even more positive for the seven-goal hitman later on today when the England squad for the friendly match against France is announced, as it is widely believed that Carroll will be called up to the senior squad for the first time in his fledgling career.

It’s been a meteoric rise to fame for the local lad as only twelve months ago he was struggling to find the net, and was looking rather ungainly in the process. The all-round improvement in his game since last Christmas has been truly staggering to be honest.

Carroll has been an absolute beast for us on the field so far this season and his contributions, both offensively and defensively, have been pretty staggering, and he is now our joint top-scorer to boot! (more…)

Andy Carroll is going nowhere!

Carroll is going nowhere!
Carroll is going nowhere!
Speculation circulated over the weekend regarding the future of Andy Carroll amid reported interest that Chelsea were preparing a bid in the region of £20 million for the Gateshead-born striker.

With no quotes or sources to back it up, I pretty much disregarded as utter rubbish, but now Chris Hughton has had his say and put the rumour to bed for good.

Carroll’s stock on the football pitch is rising rapidly and it is expected that he will get a call-up to the next England squad when it is announced later on in the week. Whether it is too early or not for the player is a separate issue really, all he can do is try his best, but it does mean that his star will be burning that little bit brighter, which perhaps inevitably will draw some interest from some of the ‘big-boys’.

“He’s not for sale and we don’t worry about that,” Hughton told The Guardian. (more…)

Carroll for England?

Carroll for England?
Carroll for England?
It looks like Andy Carroll could be getting a call up for England, certainly if you believe what you read the press this morning anyway.

Various media outlets are speculating that Fabio Capello, who was at The Emirates yesterday, has now seen enough of Carroll to afford him a place in the national team.

Of course, the decsion to call Carroll up, if he does get the call, is helped by the fact that England are suffering a striker crisis at the moment.

Whilst Wayne Rooney being out doing whatever he is doing in the USA, Darren Bent being out for three weeks or more with a hernia injury and Jermaine Defoe yet to recover from an injury that has kept him out for several weeks now may make Carroll a default selection, it would also be harsh on the lad as his on-the-pitch performances have deserved the accolades and recognition of an England call-up.
