Ryan Taylor prepares for more set piece glory.
Ryan Taylor prepares for more set piece glory.
Messrs Ryan Taylor and Ameobi Junior spared United’s blushes at Glanford Park, as Newcastle battled back from a goal down at half-time to put their name in the hat this Saturday for the League Cup 3rd round draw.

As I found my way to the turnstiles, and to get me in the mood for the match, I purchased the match day program (£3) and happened across the usual ‘all about Newcastle United’ section. There was an insightful piece about the deadly ex-Newcastle United striker, Paul Dalglish, titled ‘Whatever Happened to Paul Dalglish?’ I remember frequently asking myself the same question after he had played a match for us, as his impact on Tyneside was minimal. Anyway, turns out that the Dalglish article was not a ‘wind up’ from our hosts and he used to play for the Irons.

Before the match kicked-off and as the team news filtered through, I was slightly disappointed that Haris Vuckic found himself on the Magpies bench. I was looking forward to getting a good look at him, but little did I know that the match would progress into extra-time and I would get the chance to see the young Slovenian. It was good to know that Dan Gosling was about to get his first competitive start and Sylvain Marveaux was to make his Magpies debut. (more…)

Irons in the fire! Scunthorpe United v Newcastle United League Cup preview.

Irons in the fire at Glanford Park.
Irons in the fire at Glanford Park.
Venue: Glanford Park, Scunthorpe.
Date: Thursday, 25 August.
Kick-off: 7:45PM.
Referee: Graham Salisbury.

Scunthorpe united await the Magpies this Thursday night as the two sides meet at Glanford Park in the League Cup second round.

The match is scheduled for live broadcasting via Sky Sports 1, kick-off is at 7.45pm (BST). Graham Sailsbury is the man in the middle. Hopefully,  Alan Parry won’t be  Sky commentator for the game, simply because I find his voice annoying. We shall see…

The tie must finish on the night, with 30 minutes extra time to decide the match if the scores are still level after 90 minutes. If after extra time there is no winner, the game will be decided by penalties. We all love a good penalty shoot-out, don’t we?

You may remember our last visit to the Irons during our 2009-2010 championship season, where United lost the match 2-1. Kevin Nolan was on target for us that night. (more…)

Ashley’s false pretence over away tickets?

Mike Ashley: No shame.
Mike Ashley: No shame.
I’ve been thinking about Newcastle United’s membership policy on away matches.

Now, I’m sure you remember our first match of pre-season, where a few morons decided to invade the pitch at Darlington, inciting trouble between both sets of fans. If you can’t remember what I’m referring to, check out Thump’s piece from July, when United announced the membership policy.

There was much debate at the time, as to whether this was the right thing to do. “The minority have spoiled it for the majority” was the cry from some fans. Now I understand there is no excuse to invade a football pitch and cause trouble, but I think this membership policy has many flaws and I’ve been questioning why the club have sanctioned it.

I’ve recently returned to the UK after travelling, so obviously I’ve not been able to see any matches while I’ve been busy enjoying the wonders this planet has to offer. I’m situated in Sheffield at the moment, where some of my family now live. While I’ve been away, Newcastle spent a season in the Championship, meaning certain members of my family could catch the local Newcastle away game.

Being down in Sheffield meant they enjoyed games such as Doncaster, Sheffield Utd, Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest. They also made a few trips up to St James’ Park also, but getting the chance to see United close by really does help considering not everybody can afford to travel across the UK to see every away game. It’s not that they don’t want to see them all, it’s just that there is a financial crisis going on, we live in a country where every penny someone earns could well be the last and many people’s jobs are not as secure as they used to be. Derby day looms: Sunderland v Newcastle match preview

Sunderland v Newcastle match preview.
A visit to the dark side
It’s here…

12.00 pm on Saturday sees the 145th Tyne – Wear derby take place, as Newcastle United visit the dark place to take on Steve Bruce’s Sunderland.

Due to police advice, the game will take place at noon and there is no scheduled live broadcast of the match. If you’re not braving the journey to the Stadium of Light, you will likely be able to find a broadcast here. Just keep checking that site before kick-off and you should be able to find a link. Like last season, Howard Webb is the man in the middle.

Newcastle approach this game on the back of a 0-0 home draw against Arsenal, in which the only notable incidents were a stamp by Alex Song, Joey Barton getting angry and a slap to the face. (more…)

Spin, frustration and fear – a normal Toon transfer window?

Anybody else feeling like this?
Anybody else feeling like this?
With the exciting news of Rob Elliot’s alleged arrival at Newcastle United from Charlton, I’ve been asking myself several questions about current predicaments at St James’ Park.

Firstly, this is not Elliot’s fault and, if he does come here, I welcome him to Newcastle and wish him all the best.

Right, I could now relay my thoughts on to you dear reader, about the 7 month struggle to find a striker, no left-back and general rubbish I hear coming out of the club on a regular basis, but that would warrant at least 5 different 1000 word articles and I’d rather wait until after September 1st 2011 to vent my spleen.

Actually, I’ve changed my mind. Lets start with the left-back position…

In regards to our alleged pursuit of Erik Pieters, PSV technical director Marcel Brands has had this to say:

Since the weekend we have no news from England.

So quite what to make out of that is totally up to you, personally I can see this transfer not happening, simply because whoever it is who deals with negotiations at our club, has failed to notice we need a left-back in the squad NOW and not next week. I’m also sure Ashley probably thinks £6-7 million for a full Dutch international left-back is just ludicrous. Actually maybe it’s Llambias? Either way, it doesn’t bode well does it? (more…)
