Bruce and Chopra: No love lost.
Ex-Newcastle United forward Michael Chopra insists current Magpies boss Steve Bruce doesn’t play football “the Newcastle way” as he urges the club to bring back Rafael Benitez.

Despite keeping the Magpies safe in mid-table like his predecessor, getting into the quarter finals of the FA Cup before football was so rudely interrupted as well as getting some positive results against big clubs, such as home wins over Manchester United and Chelsea in the Premier League, North-East born Bruce still hasn’t managed to win over the Newcastle faithful this season with his defensive style.

Bruce’s style not winning fans over.

The former Sunderland boss deploys a rigid and defensively orientated style of football that Chopra suggests goes against what Newcastle fans want to see.

That pragmatism isn’t winning favour with the Geordie public and it looks increasingly likely that Bruce’s tenure may end after one full season in charge, with Newcastle currently 14/1 in the football betting for a top-half finish in the Premier League standings.

The Toon Army are already on tenterhooks as they wait for further updates on a potential Saudi-led takeover at St James’ Park, with Mike Ashley’s reign in charge set to finally end.

There will be very few tears shed around Tyneside if Ashley’s time ends, while the rumour mill is rife already in regards to who the new ownership are likely to appoint as manager if the deal is concluded.

According to Chopra, who, to be fair, has a history of making disparaging comments about Bruce, many fans are already convinced a managerial change must happen. Wins against Manchester United and Chelsea were both achieved by 1-0 scorelines and Newcastle supporters aren’t content watching their team trying to ‘nick wins’ he said before adding: “It’s not entertaining, it’s not football and it’s not Newcastle.”

Pochettino linked to Newcastle.

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is being heavily touted for the post, though it remains to be seen if Newcastle are on his radar with the Argentine recently suggesting his next club must be genuine contenders for silverware after his time in north London ended without a trophy when he was sacked back in November.

Benitez left Newcastle last summer, a decision that rankled with the passionate St James’ Park faithful at the time. The Spaniard had brought stability to the club and many believed he could go on to secure the silverware that Newcastle fans so desperately crave. Benitez has forged a career based on success at big clubs and, according to Chopra, bringing back the old manager is preferable to appointing the hugely talented Pochettino.

Benitez has “unfinished business.”

Possessing a track record of winning trophies is something that Newcastle’s potential new owners should put their stock into. Chopra feels there is ‘unfinished business’ for Benitez at the club he managed from 2015-2019 before seemingly losing patience with Ashley’s unwillingness to strengthen the squad.

A return to Newcastle would see any new owners getting off on the right note as Benitez has ‘already got plans for the football club’ that he can begin implementing straight away.

Having won 13 trophies with clubs in Spain, England and Italy in his career, Benitez is ahead of Pochettino according to Chopra. The latter has been lauded for his style of football but, crucially, Benitez is a proven winner and that sways the vote in his favour to get a second bite at the St James’ Park job.
