Newcastle United v Norwich City.
Another battle of the birds at SJP this afternoon.
Venue: St James’ Park, NE1
Date: Sunday, 18th March 2012
Kick-Off: 4pm (Sky TV)
Referee: Phil Dowd (Staffs).

Hello, good afternoon and welcpme to our “match banter” feature for this afternoon’s visit from the “Canaries” of Norwich City.

Here’s hoping for a better result than last time at their place, when we lost 4-2 in what was their highest total of goals in one game for the season so far. Grant Holt put two past us back then, with Wes Hoolahan and Steve Morison scoring the others for the Canaries in reply to our brace from Demba Ba. At least we will have home advantage this time though..

For a far more detailed look forward to the game, check out UTD111’s excellent match preview for all the team news, stats, what the managers have been saying in the run up to the game and all that sort of thing.

As usual, I will also be posting the team sheets for the game below when they become available.

This game will be on Sky Sports TV in the UK, but if you have any good links for the game, please feel free to post them.

Howay the lads!

  1. Just tried that bloodzeed one, probably the best quality stream I’ve seen! Thanks

  2. Tiote out for Gurthie then. And Arfa holds his place over Obertan. Not sure what to expect here today.

“This game will not be broadcast on UK TV, but if you have any good links for the game, please feel free to post them.”

    It’s on Sky Sports.”

Aye I noticed Jimbob, thanks. It’s corrected now I’ve done the teams.

  4. Jimbob, from the club site:

“Perch should play alongside Guthrie in the middle of the park, with Yohan Cabaye asked to take up a spot on the left flank, but tucking inside, while Hatem Ben Arfa will continue on the right wing.”

  5. Sky have it as a 4-3-1-2? Suppose that makes more sense?
HBA behind Ba and Cisse, rather than Guthrie on the right and HBA on the left? I dunno, we’ll know in a bit I suppose!

    Nice applause for Muamba.

  6. Was kinda worried we were letting chances pass. Ideal! Cisse was being criticized a bit recently but he’s hardly had a full 90 mins!

  7. Couldda had four in!
We dominated the first quarter and it was all Norwich in the second quarter.
See what happens when Norwich adjust in the second half cause it’s for sure we will continue to play the same game.
Does Williamson think he’s Ginola or Stanley Mathews, just get it out of the box for C/sakes.
The fast break seems to be working against Norwich, cant wait until they pack the defence.
Of course the same thng is applicable to Norwich, as they have some pacey forwards.

  8. Chuck, I think Norwich were doing better in some parts of the first half, but they were isolated upfront. They haven’t looked quite so isolated this half though.

  9. Here we go again, been on the back foot since the biginning of the second half.
Norwich by far the better side.
They are packing our half and open for a quick counter, but no one seems to know what to do.
    Aaaarrrggghhh !
What did i say about the second half ?

  10. Santon for HBA, looks like The silver supremo wants to hold onto a one zip lead, Aaaaarrrrggghhh!

  11. I think we should just remain static and allow Norwich on to us. Hopefully Krul will make a massive clearance and Cisse can smash it in from 40 yards.

  12. Looks to me like Pardwho borrowed Bielsa’s formation and tactics book this week ? Perch in the middle of the two CB’s and Jonas and Simmo playing wide.

Still doesnt stop us from giving away possession on a regular basis but thats more about the team methodology and Pardwho than the players.

Quiet as well could this be the Sports Direct mausoleum in future years ?

Doesnt look good for Superkeeper hope he can stay the course ?

  13. Ba is visibly knackered, so he takes of Cisse? No pace up top. Pump them long balls to Shola so we can see out the clock with twenty mins left…

  14. Cisse’s workrate was twice that of Ba this 2nd half. No idea what the sub was for.

“Killie beaten the Hoops in the League Cup Final”

Super Killie go ballistic, Celtic are atrocious!

  16. Didnt save the search but if you select all games this season home and away where the side has scored more than two goals and let in “Any” we end up 3rd from bottom just above Wolves and QPR.

  17. We got Perch playing in the midfield and who does he replace HBA, and people wonder about this guys management skills ?
Oh 1 Oh! hear comes the fenham Eusabio !

  18. 3 points, fank thuck. :-)

    Where? Where Andy?

    Oh, I see Andy.

  20. Phew ! never so happy to hear the final whistle.
What can i say we lucked out, being outplayed for the majority of the game, only dominating in the first twenty minutes.
    Bizarre !

  21. At least we got three points but again it was shite to watch. No surprise that a lesser team came to St James’ Park, mostly dominated the match and we just hoofed it around second half.

  22. Seems every game we’re hanging onto something for about an hour! Don’t fancy dying young. HBA did well I thought. Cabaye having an up and down game. Shola on a confidence game atm, seems like he was slicing them up!

In general though, should we struggle against Norwich at home with our near full strength side?

  23. Quality ball into the middle is what we’ve lacked for so many games this season. Jonas manages two in one game from left back ?

Still isnt right but we got three points so there’ll be those who’ll be digging out the European route maps ready for next season :)

  24. Though Ba & Cisse are national side team-mates, they have not looked in synch here, with Shola much the better at the second striker role.
He’s good at holding the ball and not a shabby passer,
    ok Shola !

On the basis of the quality of players available then the answer is a unanimous “No”

However this is Pardwho’s team that has “hard work” at the top of the priority list. Unfortunately skill levels, ability to beat a man, ability to pick out a team mate with one touch (or even two or three) passes all come way down the list of his priorities.

It looks like we have enough to finish in the top ten this season so Fatman will feel his manager has done enough and we’ll all have to wait another season, as a minimum, before the bloke is considered not fit for purpose.

Maybe fans dont see or cant be bothered about what goes on behind the scenes to produce what we see on the pitch but sooner or later they’ll begin to wake up and smell the coffee about Pardwho – but judging by some of the comments acroos the web – it aint gonna happen soon :(

IMO he’s the Toon’s “Elephant in the House” !!!

  26. Though not a great fan of stats. i see we are twelfth in the league on completed passes.
It’s pretty hard to guarantee a passes arrival when half of them are, hoofball hail mary passes.
I dont get it, the Norwich game turned out to be (as seemingly does every second half) a replica of the Arsenal game, the difference being we were leading.
But the result was us defending desperately.
When we should have been going after that second goal to seal the win, Pardew takes off two of our offensive players.
I can only surmise he was willing to settle for a one goal lead, dangerous !
And did we not hear prior to the game he intended to go all out in attack, to get the three points.
I’m sure there was more relief among the fans than satisfaction with the way the game was played, not exactly a classic, expect more of the same.
you are never going to see attractive football with this guy managing.

  27. Chuck,

You wrote that you didn’t see those two Manchester United – Athletic Club games, but I have have links to videos of the whole two matches if you were interested?

  28. It’s moved up four places since I was last there then!

“Sunderland is fourth worst city in Britain

Proud Wearsiders today hit back at claims that tourists are shunning Sunderland because it has nothing to see and they loathe the Mackem accent.

The city was named the fourth least visited in the UK and at risk of being lost to future generations of travellers, in a report by hotel chain Travelodge.

The firm, which has a hotel in Low Row, polled 5,000 travellers and 69 per cent said Sunderland has nothing to offer them, and a quarter would avoid it because they dislike the local accent.

But civic leaders and city ambassadors have criticised the poll…”

I would say that Durham City was the “Athens of the North,” Chuck. Hyem to one of the finest Cathedrals ever constructed and Britain’s third Grove of Academe.

  31. WORKEY
Wey a kna man!, great historical city and in general I would imagine a fine place to live.
Just practicing my mackems accent, how does it rate ?
