Newcastle United v Norwich City.
Chris Hughton returns to SJP..
Venue: St James’ Park, Newcastle.
Date: Sat 23rd Nov, 2013.
Kick off: 3.00pm.
Referee: Mike Dean.
UK TV: None.

Hello, good afternoon and welcome to our ‘match banter’ feature for this afternoon’s game against Chris Hughton’s Norwich City at St James’ Park.

As usual, I will keep this one fairly short and sweet, as I have already done most of my pre-match ramblings in the Norwich City mega match preview I prepared earlier. However, if you fancied a bet on the game with some great odds available, why not try Betfair? You can also follow events as they happen throughout the game on the NUFC official website.

What the managers have been saying.

Alan Pardew: “We’ve got ourselves in a poised position – now we need to capitalise on that, something we’ve not done well in the last 18 months. If we win we can put ourselves right in the mix. For us, it’s a great opportunity and we don’t want to pass on those opportunities. They don’t come around very often in the Premier League. If we get ourselves in a good place with 50,000 (fans) that’s going to make a big advantage and we need to make sure we carry that through.”

Chris Hughton: “When you’re on the back of a win, and you’ve got a little bit of momentum, then of course they are the times that you’re very much looking forward to the next game. It was a big win for us against West Ham, but we’re also very conscious of where we are in this league. We’re not that many points away from teams that are deemed to have had a good start to their season.”

Well that only leaves it for me to give you my usual reminders before signing off for now. Firstly I will be posting the official team sheets for the game, as well as links to watch it online (it isn’t being broadcast live in the UK) about an hour before the kick-off. As well as this, I will also be posting highlights when it’s all over. For those of you you can’t watch the game live, never fear as I will even posting a video of the whole game later on so stay tuned!.

  2. Same old, same old ? Maybe .cock have it as 4-4-2 just to confuse a blog ?

Tell Paul I’m not watching but good luck all the same :)

  3. Cautious Chris’s 11.

Norwich City (4-5-1): John Ruddy (G); Russell Martin (C), Michael Turner, Ryan Bennett, Martin Olsson; Nathan Redmond, Bradley Johnson, Leroy Fer, Jonny Howson, Anthony Pilkington; Gary Hooper.

Subs: Carlo Nash (G), Steven Whittaker, Sebastien Bassong, Josh Murphy, Wes Hoolahan, Johan Elmander, Lucianno Becchio.

  4. That’s the team I thought he would play but Pardew is painting himself into a corner. There is no way he can drop his Captain which means MBiwa misses out when Debuchy comes back.

Still, for today I hope this team are good enough to beat Norwich. Need some cheering up after the past 2 days of the cricket.

It is interesting watching the bin dippers. Rodgers had Liverpool do a backs to the wall second half and Everton scored. Are you watching Alan Pardew?

“Still, for today I hope this team are good enough to beat Norwich. Need some cheering up after the past 2 days of the cricket.”

GS, from what I saw it was OK on the first day, then went tits up on the second?

  6. The bin-dippers game is quite good. There is a theory that Chelsea loaned Lukaku to Everton to sabotage their rivals. If so that was a stupid move because he is better than any of the players they are currently playing and they look very lightweight without him.

“Afternoon Chaps :) missed the fookin’ goal haha”

Gouffran from a corner. He was pretty much on the line when he scored it though.

  8. im watching it on nutjob.eu perfect stream just about 20 seconds behind but that fine with me, Also whats up with shola? he looks like a different man

  9. Poor defending again, though passing and resulting possession improves by the game.
Remy is a natural and will be playing for one of the Londons finest next season.
Gouffran and Sissoko, both working hard, with Shola showing how to lay on the perfect pass.
I guess Tiote thinks he can shoot and he does have a hard shot, but not many score from the halfway line.
The great defender and excellent header of the ball (yeah right) Williamson is playing his usual poor game.

  10. This is what i’m talkin bout, we really need at least one or more decent CD’s, let Colo Fgug off, take His buddy Jonas with him, cause i’m sick of his crying about going home.
The less said about Williamson the better, usless cnut.

  11. Dokky says:
    November 23, 2013 at 4:37 pm

    “it’s never easy is it”

Dokky, apart from a friendly against Motherwell, the last time we scored more than two goals in a game was almost a year ago against Southampton (4-2).

  12. Win is a win, But we could have just as easily thrown it away?
No doubt big head Pardew will say, “Ah fowt we woz excellent”, Or words to that effect!

  13. Only 2 points behind S’ton and above Citeh. Its a funny old game.

Have we even played well in any game? Some good halves here and there.

  14. Could have lost the three points easily, through dumbass tactics.
We played a good first half, clearly dominating play, except for a shaky defense on the rare occasion Norwich put us under pressure.
This tactic of taking your foot off the gas and concentrating on holding a lead has to go.
Other top sides dont play this stupid game , but continue to look for goals until the final whistle.
But thats the kind of management we have.
And yes Shola had a decent first half, but it became obvious he no longer has a full game, in which case bring him on for a forward for the last twenty minutes.
Our need at this time is center backs, Colo has lost a step, williamson is for a guy six four, almost useless in the air.
That should be Kinnear’s job, go get us at least two good CD’s.the rest can wait and perhaps a decent manager, while he’s looking.

  15. I think we have to drop Coloccini as maybe his head is in Argentina again. It certainly is from today’s quotes and he was at fault for the Norwich goal.

  16. Debuchy coming back means a straight choice between Colo and MBiwa and given current form it has to be MBiwa.

  17. chuck says:

“williamson is for a guy six four, almost useless in the air.”

Chuck, you have completely lost the plot over Williamson. He was our best defender today, and a fair amount of that was due to his ability in the air once again.

  18. GS
Exactly, and Collo was the one out-jumped for the goal. Obviously not good enough to be in the same defence as Iron Mike ‘clean sheet’ Williamson. ;) AND he wants away! get shot I say, past his sell by date anyway. Mbiwa has the pace we need to sweep up at the back.

  19. This has happened before with Coloccini. When he starts to think about Argentina he becomes half the player.

It is so idiotic as well. What right does he have to ask for a free transfer? And I bet he would have to take a cut of a million or more in wages. At his age, with only a few years left, can he afford to do that? He is kidding himself.

  20. Good win, but as you can see I am mad at Coloccini because he is putting himself before the team. That is definitely not Captain material and he should be stripped of it today.

  21. GS says:
    November 23, 2013 at 5:28 pm

“This has happened before with Coloccini. When he starts to think about Argentina he becomes half the player.”

I actually thought he was OK overall, but he’s always been shite in the air.

  22. Worky: I don’t think he looked as comfortable on the ball as usual and didn’t bring the ball upfield a few times like he normally does.

Maybe I am fitting my view of the game to my preconceptions. That wouldn’t be unheard of for me. Similar to the way Williamson is judged sometimes before he has kicked a ball :)

M’Biwa is not the tallest either and he doesn’t deserve to be dropped.

Since I am on a rant. Jonas wasn’t on the bench and is usually one of Pardew’s faves. Was he not training in Argentina? What, they don’t have gyms and local teams where he lives?

  23. GS says:

“Maybe I am fitting my view of the game to my preconceptions.”

    You mean like Chuckles, GS?

Did you watch Santon in that game, GS? Both he and Debuchy (when he plays) have been told to stay way back compared with how they were, and we were playing a team who were on the back foot for much of the game.

  24. Worky
No i call em as i see em!
I guess you must have missed “Iron Mike’s” header close to the six yard box, where he headed the ball in the air directly above him, rather than out of danger, unimpeded at the time, only goes to show how poor he is in the air.
A guy that tall should dominate both boxes during set plays and we all know his goalscoring record since he’s been at the club, yep! two own goals .
So much for his being good in the air.

    DJG
I agree Colo. has lost a step, but he’s still worlds ahead of that donkey you rate Williamson.
With Worky i understand it he once praised Williamson and doesn’t know how to admit he could be wrong.
But for you to claim Williamson is a better player than Colo. shows how little you understand football and if i were you i wouldn’t make it obvious.
Plus i’m not one of your get behind the team guys, i call em like i see em, warts an’all.

“With Worky i understand it he once praised Williamson and doesn’t know how to admit he could be wrong.”

Thanks Chuckles, I was absolutely pissing myself laughing at that one! Do you know what psychological projection means?

  26. On reading most post game comments.
I find a lack of any analysis of what the game was about.
Criticism and insults are plentyfull, but those who only criticise, never seem to venture an opinion of what took place and why.
    Why is that ?

  27. Worky
Yes i do actually, Which has nothing to do whith my claim.

Look anyone who understands football, will tell you Williamson is not a good player and for you to continue to insist (even convincing a few Knaa nowts) that he is.
Well that’s more about ego and admitting you may have been wrong
We both understand that and to get all defensive whenever i mention his name, sez it all.

  28. I made some comments during the game Chuck. I was also commenting on something that Worky brought up in his intro that was about the mindset of our Argies. I don’t want to get into yet another argument with you.

You bring up Williamson and I disagree with you. What is wrong with that?

I agree we could do with someone better as a central defender, but he is what we have and MBiwa and Coloccini don’t appear to be able to play together.

WHO SAID I (OR ANYONE ELSE) WAS DOING FULL MATCH ANALYSIS ANYWAY?

  29. Worky says

“Did you watch Santon in that game, GS? Both he and Debuchy (when he plays) have been told to stay way back compared with how they were, and we were playing a team who were on the back foot for much of the game.”

Are you saying they should for Chelsea, Spurs and then Pardew has us playing the same tactic against Norwich when they should be given more license to attack?

  30. GS says:
    November 23, 2013 at 7:00 pm

“I agree we could do with someone better as a central defender.”

I did try to tell Mike Ashley, Derek Llambias, Alan Pardew and Graham Carr who to get, but they didn’t listen.

  31. Worky: we weren’t doing the high pressing today like we did Spurs 1st half and Chelsea 2nd half. I can never really fathom our tactics. All I know is that if we are ahead at the half we usually go into our shell.

  32. GS, as I pointed out earlier to Dokky, with the exception of Motherwell in a pre season friendly, the last time we scored more than two goals in a game was almost a year ago against Southampton.

  33. GS says:
    November 23, 2013 at 7:15 pm

“Worky @67: isn’t Vertonghen playing fullback for Spurs though?”

He’s played centre back and left back, GS.

  34. Worky: I had read some complaints on the Spurs links before they played us about playing Vertonghen out of position and Dawson full stop. They were 4th at the time and giving AVB a hard time. So, we are all pretty fickle.

The funniest ones are Man U who wanted to get rid of Ferguson one of those few years they didn’t win the league recently.

  35. Well anyway!
A fair game, where we played well as usual in the first half, stretching Norfolk.
Some nice tactics, bringing the ball out and the passing was much improved.
With most working hard, especially Sissoko, Remy, Cabaye and Gouffran, hard work brings goals and thats what it takes in this league.
Though we missed the dual attacking threat of Debuchy and Santon, they were not really needed and i wish they would concentrate a bit more on defense in future.
The middle of defense is where we need help and hopefully we can bring in at least one if not two, decent defenders and i wouldn’t be upset if we got rid of a couple.
Jonas and Colo. would be no great loss , time to get rid of the deadwood.
Of course the second half proved to be as expected as Jonas and Santons turns to-wards the middle when advancing the ball.
A two goal lead ? Park the bus!
Instead of continuing to press for more goals, sit back and absorb the Norfolk attacks.
Ok ! but in turn it gives an advantage to spring fast breaking counters, especiall with the pace of Sissoko, Gouffran and Remy, but it wasn’t until they scored that we saw any breaks.
HBA should get a start, as i’m sure he wants to be included in the French side, instead of starting Shola, who shold be a final twenty minute impact player.
I’m wondering why Taylor has not had any time lately, could be he’s not fit ?
And what about giving some time to the bench, Pardew goes with the same side until someone gets injured or carded, how do you expect players to become game fit ?
I still have no faith in Pardew and believe we have got our last three wins in spite of him.
He is as predictable as the tides and all the other managers have his number.

  36. Worky @73: the Spurs fans were mostly moaning about AVB and Dawson.

On Williamson, we all know his limitations and I think he does as well. He is not very good on the ball and gets a bit flustered sometimes. It is up to our other skill players to not put pressure on him because he will knock it long or out. We can’t have him and Krul both doing that because it often gifts possession back.

Tiote puts Williamson under pressure sometimes, whereas Anita doesn’t. But, big Mike hasn’t tried any stupid dribbles and has kept it simple. What you see is what you get and the other players should know he is not Beckenbauer, they’re on the training field with him every day.

It is up to our players and coaches to work within Mike’s limitations. He has a role to play just like Tiote. You wouldn’t expect Cabaye to play centre back, so why expect Mike to hit the Hollywood pass? We are not playing total football for Gods sake.

The stats aren’t really lying. That we have better results with him in the side.

ALL THAT SAID, I WOULD STILL LIKE A BETTER CENTRE BACK IN JANUARY.

  37. On Taylor: I think we should be ultra cautious because he is decent cover. He keeps twanging his hamstrings and that may be because he isn’t given enough time to heal. I am not the physio, but you would think with a reoccurring injury he should be given extra time when we have others doing a decent job.

  38. On the plus side with Mike: he is a decent tackler, is better than average in the air, has decent positional sense and keeps it simple.

  39. And on the same theme, Tiote should know his role. And that is not to shoot from 30 yards 5 times in a game.

  40. GS says:
    November 23, 2013 at 8:00 pm

“And on the same theme, Tiote should know his role.”

Beating people up and getting cards thrust at him?

    GS says:
    November 23, 2013 at 7:57 pm

“On the plus side with Mike: he is a decent tackler, is better than average in the air”

He’s very good in the air and despite what Chuckles says, it isn’t just a matter of being 6’4. There are six footers who are shite in the air because height is only half of it. You need timimg and technique as well.
