Tottenham take on The Toon.
Tottenham take on The Toon.
Venue: White Hart Lane.
Date: Saturday 11th Feb, 2012.
Kick-off: 5.30pm.
Referee: Andre Marriner.

Good afternoon Geordies (or should that be good evening?) and welcome to our regular “match banter” feature.

Today of course we face Tottenham Hotspur away at White Hart Lane. If you read my match preview you will see from the stats alone that this should be a very tough proposition for the Magpies despite the Tottenham manager’s recent “distractions.” However, Spurs’ drab 0-0 stalemate against Liverpool may give cause for both hope and despair. Whilst they seemed to lack their usual potency upfront, they certainly kept things tight at the back, but we’ll see.

As usual, i will try to post the team sheets for the game below as quickly as I can once they become available.

This game will be broadcast in the UK on ESPN.

Howay the Lads!

Tottenham Hotspur fact.

Tottenham Hotspur are widely beleived to have been named after a Geordie, Harry Hotspur the 2nd Duke of Northumberland, who owned much of the land on which Tottenham now stands.

  1. Liverpool lost, Chelsea losing 2-0 and Arsenal drawing with the Mackems. 4th spot is ours for the taking and to distant our-selfs further away from Arsenal and Liverpool.

We have to do this. HWTL!!

  2. this is how strong we are.We shouldn’t do one thing- to receive early goal and we did it great. In moment like this i really see how far top 4 is

  3. Obertan standing admiring Ekotto for the first one and Danny Simpson been a statue for the second

  4. simpson, willo, perch, guthrie, obertan aren’t top 4 quality and obviously you can’t reach top 4 with them.

  5. What a shambles. No one cutting down on players and we keep playing long ball. This hit it and hope tactics are starting to pee me off now

  6. Bliddy hell… Always the ex toon that come back to haunt us.

Fish and chips Waddle, fish and chips.

  7. Just texted my son to ask why Pardwho thinks he can go toe to toe ( 4-4-2 ) against Spuds, and with two underachievers in the team ?

Could be six by half time.

Pardwho for England ? Yes please :)

  8. Do not know how AP is going to find any sort of excuse for this display, sorry should not have used the word DISPLAY, meant to say CRAP

  9. Yes, Please give Pardew to England and let us get rid of him. Everyone can beat Blackburn, Wigan, Aston Vila, but if you need something special- show it against Spurs for example.
“Great tactics again- Obertan vs Bale and two upfront- who the hell think we are. Don’t you know your squad ,Pardew.
And one more- don’t forget to praise Perch”, haha

  10. And one thing for Spurs(without Defoe, Vaart,Lenon), this team looks really prettier than Man utd and City and deserves to win Premiership soon.
About us- i don’t care. Wins over 10th, 9th and 15th don’t have any price when you live in an illusion.
Won’t be surprised if we look like Bolton next campaign, as they did a year ago, just like us now.

  11. Everybody needs to calm down – its just a bad day at the office, we’ll be back better than ever next match with Cabaye back. No ‘Pardew Out’ Talk.

  12. When we play well you cant see the cracks yet when we play s**t thats when you notice simpson, perch & obertan are not worth a place in our team?

  13. When Pardew gets his tactics wrong we get thumped said it before and this could turn out to be a right hiding.Spurs were always going to be up for this one pity we werent over after 5 minutes great chance for that 4th spot back to reality just not good enough.

  14. Actually i don’t see any difference between Simpon’s and Obertan’s dislpay over Aston Villa’s win.
They are just limited players and cannot offer more than they do.
    True for me.

  15. Some strange comments here tonight. Not sure how people can sing spurs praises with things like prettier than man u and city and deserves to win the league, while in the same breath slating Newcastle for getting beaten by them… Also, its funny how a bad result is always solely down to Alan pardew being shit, yet a win or a good performance is always cos the players are great. Can’t have it both ways chaps…

  16. Howay man. if we went to spurs with a 451 formation then we would of complained about our negative approach. Pardew has put the best formation we have in our armoury Perch & simpson havent done much wrong but i cant stand them. why they are in our team is beyond me. Another weekend where we could really cement our place as a big contender for europe yet another weekend where we are being shown we are not as good as our leagie position suggests.

  17. We came out looking for 3 points and got off to a poor start. Shouldn’t be collapsing like this though. We will be in minus goal difference by the end of this ;)

  18. We are never going to be great until we get rid of Simpson, Willo, perch and Obertan. Guti has been crap to.

No great comeback today I am afraid.

  19. anyone thinking arsenal repeat? and all of those bashing Pardew need to stop. he has been, generally, a very good manager.

  20. It just goes to show against real opposition we are a shambles. I know Tiote and Cabaye are out but we need to replace out lower class players come the summer and get some quality players in.

  21. damage limitation now but spurs have been just to good, a comeback would be good but hard to see any spark from that first half. get one or two would see our goal difference improve but the way tottenham are playing they can score more. keep faith we are in a good position to finish strong with tiote and cabaye to return can only look up

  22. Well this is shite. Bit like the Blackburn game where most people said if we play like this against a top team we will get battered. And here we are against a top team… Getting battered. Looking forward to the second half plan b… Not.

  23. As supporters we have the right to complain at this time, the transfer window has just closed, we went into it looking for defence additions and we ended it in exactly the same way. OK Raylor is injured and a Cabaye is out banned, + Tiote in ACN, but we are in no way prepared for such absences and once again its been proved against a good team which if we are to be any good is what we should be measuring ourselves against.

  24. Same old same old every one blame perch! If you watching he or we ain’t even done much wrong just out played by better team! Who expected t be were we are now! Deluded springs t mind

  25. Fellas!!!!

It’s the middle of February and we are talking about Champion’s League qualification in 4th spot as an outside possibility.

Did ANYBODY think that would be the case in August 2011?

    Jeez!

  26. scott says:
” Also, its funny how a bad result is always solely down to Alan pardew being shit”

Scott we were poor against Blackburn but won with a deflected shot and a last minute breakaway goal. Villa should have been four one up by half time until Pardwho decided he should stop their wing threat.

It’s been said already, if we play crap teams then we look good (ish). However when we’re asked to tough it out with most of the top teams (particularly away from home)we’re worse than poor.

Bright side ? At least we aint going down :)

  27. johnny says:

” all of those bashing Pardew need to stop. he has been, generally, a very good manager.”

Generally ? apart from 99% of the crunch games where we need a manager to work out a plan a, b and c :(

Stevenage, Blackburn, Brighton plus Fulham, Norwich and most of last seasons howlers :)

  28. willo witn another calssy movement.
I DON”T UNDERSTAND HOW RIDICULOUS SHOULD BE TO KNOW YOU NEED NEW DEFENDER, TO HAVE 2 MONTHS, AND NOT TO DO IT?

  29. I’m just dissapointed Bale hasn’t chipped in, I captained him for my fantasy league this week!

  30. hmm dont know what pardew has in mind about ben arfa but i think he doesnt see him in his future plans hopefully im wrong but seeing how he is overlooked so many times its very hard to watch and for the player himself

“hmm dont know what pardew has in mind about ben arfa but i think he doesnt see him in his future plans hopefully im wrong but seeing how he is overlooked so many times its very hard to watch and for the player himself”

Meanwhile Newcastle make a switch with Dan Gosling on for Papiss Demba Cisse

    That’ll change the game !!!!!!!!!!

  32. This past week’s soundbytes have all been about Pardwho saying “I’m going to Spuds to try to win” etc etc just as the week leading up to the Brighton game was all about “It’s about time Toon won a trophy, Wembley here we come, blah blah blah”

I’ll go on record here and now and state Pardwho will never win a major trophy while at NUFC or at any other club he subsequently joins when someone finally has the common sense to replace him.

Arse in Fenwicks window (with local TV and that pillock Ryder from the Chron in attendance)in the unlikely event :)

  33. Sorry lads – worst team I have seen at the lane this year. Do us a favour and beat Arsenal for 4th.

  34. The buildup was all about can Spurs stop the Senegal duo.. Nvm. Didn’t expect any points today and didn’t get any. Well 6th and 1 point from 4th. Thats not bad surely? 2 winnable games coming up with Tiote and Cabaye back and both SJP and 2 weeks rest. Didn’t expect any points today and didn’t get any. Sucks about our goal difference but we we’re never anywhere near the top 5 in goal difference anyway! HWTL

  35. demba 3 says:

“Do me a favour Andy mac go support SunDerland”

or do me a favour Demba and work out why Pardwho was chosen to take over the reins from Hughton ?

  36. PeteTHFC says:

“Sorry lads – worst team I have seen at the lane this year. Do us a favour and beat Arsenal for 4th”

Most teams would recognise how you play at the Lane and try to nullify it Pete but not us :( . Well done to Spuds and Arry (even though he’s still a dodgy dealer IMHO).

  37. workyticket says:

“I’ve put the match highlights up for those who desperately want to relive the experience”

alternatively why not go to “CorporalPunishment.com” and watch men being thrashed within an inch of their lives, same thing really :)

  38. Andymac obviously been in a different world if he thinks newcastle ain’t improved this season! Wot were you expecting? Title challenge? Deluded kid. A win today would of took us top 4 and you got the nerve complain! Sad man

  39. demba 3 says:

“Andymac obviously been in a different world if he thinks newcastle ain’t improved this season! Wot were you expecting? Title challenge? Deluded kid. A win today would of took us top 4 and you got the nerve complain! Sad man”

Sorry my team have just been thrashed 5-0 and I have the nerve to complain, what was I thinking of ???

  40. Yes we all disappointed but you can’t get on pardews back after this. They title challengers on fire! I expected more but ain’t gonna beat my self up still over the moon at were we are now, think 99% of fans will be 2

  41. demba 3 says:

“Yes we all disappointed but you can’t get on pardews back after this”

So formation, personnel and tactics were spot on were they ?

What about getting on the player’s backs demba 3?

  43. I agree worky players were poor never have rated oba but as soon as he pulls on that black and White shirt i will support him. Spurs have made alot of teams look poor

  44. Demba you muppet I’ve already asked you

“Tell me why Pardwho was appointed in place of CH”
then I asked you ” and
“So formation, personnel and tactics were spot on were they ?”

get your finger out first m8y :(

  45. If we went there 4-5-1 you would of complained we were 2 negative, as for the team i would of picked the same you obviously never seen benny at blackburn

“I agree worky players were poor”

demba 3, I didn’t say the players were poor, I just don’t understand why you think it’s wrong to criticise Pardew after a poor performance because we’re doing quite well overall, and yet you seem to think it’s ok to criticise the players. what’s the difference?

If it’s wrong to criticise Pardew because we’re doing well overall, then surely it would also be wrong to criticise the players who have done the most to achieve that success?

  47. AndyMac says at 5.59pm:

“Just texted my son to ask why Pardwho thinks he can go toe to toe ( 4-4-2 ) against Spuds, and with two underachievers in the team ?”

Pardwho the Clueless says at 8.32pm

“But a lot of the blame lays with me, we probably had too many offensive players on the pitch”
