Is this really the new Newcastle United East Stand sign?

St James' Park East Stand sign.
Hmmmmm...
Well known Newcastle United site nufc.com have posted the image you see here of the new sign over St James’ Park’s East Stand, much favoured by pensioners with tartan lap rugs and flasks of tea, and myself I may add. But I digress…

The picture, posted by “KM”, was supposedly taken on Wednesday, September 14th, and as you can see, the sign isn’t quite “exactly the same” as the club claimed in a statement. The lettering has been italicised to fit in with the much more important Sports Direct signage which will now be flanking it.

Toon blogger, Steve Wraith, claimed on his Twitta around a week ago that when completed, the sign would read:

“(puma logo) sportsdirect newcastle united sports direct (puma logo)”

And he certainly seems to be right so far. However time will tell once and for all when the Blackburn game referred to above takes place on Saturday, 24th September.

  4. I wonder if the new Fifa 12 will have this sign?

May as well be Sports Direct United, and change this blogs name to thesportsdirectblog.org.

  5. have you ever heard the saying?????

if you pay me i will?????????

    and my comment is

If you pay me i will go on a stadium tour and find out for you!!!!!!!! and take a picture as well.

  6. He need not have bothered with the Newcastle United bit. How fcking bad does 3 (maybe 4) SD signs look? That’s excessive I think. Sports Direct kit next season maybe?

Does even the etihad stadium have ‘etihad’ written everywhere, or the Reebok stadium, JJB stadium?

We should use the rest of the AC cash to change the seats to blue and red, maybe even banish the black and white stripes, and have blue and red ones. How sexy would that look?

    I’ll stop now, we’re 4th aren’t we.

  7. Thank goodness we all sat on our hands and didnt bother protesting by not buying…………..

    “It can be even worst.”

Ginkoh, if you can imagine what is “even worse” there’s a good chance that you have guessed Mike Ashley’s next move. That’s usually true in my experience anyway. ;-)

  9. Does SD have an anthem, they should play that instead of Local Hero, and have the PA announce the fantastic bargain deals in your local Sports Direct outlet…

Half-time entertainment could consist of a catwalk across the pitch, with all kinds of sporting wear and equipment on show.

  10. if i remember rightly the JJB is now the DW and there are more DWs in that staidium than there were Sterois in Dwain Chambers blood a while back.

DW stadium is pretty well covered in DWs. you even ever to pass a DW hyper market sports shop to get to the ground.

if ashleys enemy is anything to gain inspiration from the seats will be in for a change.

to be honest Mikes lacking in adverts compared to his bitter rival. anyone noticed the Mag pie on the menu at St. james? apparently there is a carrot, blue cheese and chicken pie being trialled as we speak. you can guess what the name will be cant you.

  11. To be fair, that picture look exactly the same as the one with them tearing the lettering down. The three lines through the picture are the same, could easily be fake. But you would have to question someone sad enough to do that.

  12. or maybe we could get all the players (in their black and white shirts) to parade adverts on the back of their shirts ?

or have all their shirts tagged with a 50% off label which would flutter in the breeze as they ran along the pitch ?

  13. i was looking at this “f**kin’ monstrosity”,earlier today.
what is it with this dickhead ashley?,does he get a kick out of antagonising the fans?
another tacky sign to go along with his other tat, this man has no class, fullstop.
he really is going out of his way to ensure an empty stadium,in the future.
they have no idea of the apathy, they are creating at the club…
someone needs to take them to one side, and inform them of their actions, because they will have f**k all to sell,at the finish.

No one really WT I was being facetious :(

Modelled by Chavs carrying screwdrivers and looking furtively from side to side perhaps as it’s Sports Direct?

  16. worky,”signed picture of sports direct owner”?
is it humanly possible to blow up photos to that size?

  17. TROJAN 69 says:

“Someone needs to take them to one side, and inform them of their actions, because they will have f**k all to sell,at the finish”

I have a feeling that it wont concern them Trojan because the bums on seats contributes a lot less than TV money especially if we get to 10th or higher :(

  18. not to worry everything is “hunky dory”,on “planet pardew”.he’s waxing lyrical about mike williamson’s return.
that story is akin to passing a second hand shop, and seeing a dress in the window, with a sign attached saying,”lovely on”.

  19. andymac, a few more performances of mondays standard, and it’s “parachute payments” and windy nights in watford, all round.

  20. Trojan, stop your negativity and look at the table :-)

Actually I’m sure Pardew is thinking about the game on Saturday and conjuring up a plan to punt the ball to Shola faster.

  21. everthing has become charvered up,in the ashley era,he tries to treat everyone like his employees.
i wonder what it will be next?,you have to be in the stadium for four hours, before you can have a toilet break.

  22. jimbob, ah knaa, a must be deed ungrateful, who else was banging on about the best start to a season in years?
was it not “fat sham”?,and look what happened there lol.

  23. Does it matter? It just seems like most of you will jump on anything the club do, to be honest it makes us all look like morons to be so petty, after all it is just a sign …

  24. Yeah Trojan, but I doubt Pardew will be sacked mate. Ever.

He’s doing well now, and if the wheels fall off, he’ll still keep the job.

Who else would work for Ashley? We’d have David Pleat or Ron Atkinson.

I’d rather have Pardew than either of them.

  25. jimbob @17

how dare you mate, you have no idea how popular the DW stadium is.

if you did your research properly you would see that the DW stadium is filled to capacity every week.

Wigan fans worship their ground, just like any Rugby League club should.

  26. AndyMac

I’m ashamed Stephen, you’re right, should have done my research…

I’ll look into the Rugby League website, have a look at the stats for attendances, and when we’re up against Wigan, I’ll post an apology to them in my match preview…

  27. It’s a sign, who the he’ll cares? Look at all the other stadia in the premiership. Welcome to reality then move on.

  28. i wouldn’t go that far jimbob thats just taking the P**s.

the wigan football fans will be wandering what on earth is going on. poor fellows.

anyone who lives in a rugby town and expects to fill a stadium with of football lovers must surely be on day release. or an away fan.

you are better off writing to the the local health authority. might get more luck.

  29. Kev says:

“It’s a sign, who the he’ll cares? Look at all the other stadia in the premiership. Welcome to reality then move on”

Happy to see it renamed to SportsDirect Park in two years time then ?

  30. cant the newcastle council step in and do something i remember a few years ago the council stepped in do block a move ashley was planning if it was the newcastle signage or for something else, tho would be a laugh if someone were to nick the signage and put it on ebay be worth a bit :)

  31. as far am i’m aware the council asked the Newcastle MP to bring it up in parliament.
thats when it was mentioned in the houses and ashley looked the biggest dick head ever.
but as far as the council doing anything they cant do much.
the land it is built on belongs to the freemen of the city, do some research on that one. the likes of Sir bobby robson, Allan sheerer and even Nelson Mandela are all free men of Newcastle upon tyne. they can let their cattle graze on the pitch at anytime they choose.

so if we get any more grief from ashley we should all club together and buy wor Alan 5 thousands cows. and there is very little mike can do about it.

as far as the legality of it all, the council still own St. James Park it is leased to the owners of the football club. even if ashley wanted to change the name of St. James park it would not be worth the paper it is written on. the property is owned by the council and the property is called St. James Park. so any change in the respects would be pure cosmetic. any one can stick a name on their house but to those who matter most its always going to be the same.

and to be honest lets just let the big baby have his day. im certain we might enjoy his downfall someday.

and all this fuss is only giving mike free advertisement.

try thinking about Newcastle united and not thinking about sports direct at the same time.

    the less talk the better.

the way i see it, its like living at home with your parents, your mother has the hoover on and you lift your feet to let her hoover, you know she is there but you just carry one watching the tv.

    Stephen, that is great stuff!

I’d love you to write a ‘blog along those lines to publish on here if you were up for it?

  33. Tbh, I don’t see what the problem is, yeah I know it’s not good looking or what some of the fans want to see but personally I’d be looking at the footy on the pitch instead of looking at the advertising around the stand…

All teams do it now, I can bet you Etihad will have as much advertising boards splattered around the Manc Citey ground if this new £400m deal goes ahead, they’ll want fans to see it at every turn & Ashley will be the same for his company Sports Direct, if you want to blame anyone, you should be blaming Sir John, as he new when he sold his shares to Ashley, that that was exactly what they wante dto do, ‘advertise his southern based sported empire in the NE’… he said it himself….

The fact of the matter is, as long as Ashley is the owner, he will do what he can to advertise his profit making, multi millions pound company anywhere & everywhere he can, no matter what we the fans say… the only problem we will have is if he does sell, the new owners would just cover up what he’s plastered all over the stadium with their own branding unless he pays them for sponsorship… and who knows, the next shirt sponsors may well be Sport Direct… at least it’s not feckin Tombola ffs… lol lol

Oh yeah nearly forgot, how many of you so called die hard fans who class the Sport Direct product as tat can honestly say they haven’t in the last 4 yr brought a single thing from there… but I bet you did before Ashley brought the club… lol lol so in essence, it was your money which you brought those trainers, trackie suit, shirts etc etc… that helped Ashley buy the club in the first place.. lol, so no one to blame but yourselves… lmfao…

  34. TBF – it looks photoshopped. If you looke to either side of the “RECT.com” there is a slight line.

  35. Why doesnt my fellow Newcastle united fans grow up, its only a sign for gods sake, does it really matter if that clown Ashley put a million stupid signs on the stand, as long as the team is doing well on the pitch, thats all that matters.

  36. “its only a sign for gods sake” – as long as its not a sign from the gods! Whom they wish to destroy they first make mad!

  37. “All teams do it now, I can bet you Etihad will have as much advertising boards splattered around the Manc Citey ground if this new £400m deal goes ahead, they’ll want fans to see it at every turn & Ashley will be the same for his company Sports Direct”

Yeah but we’re not getting £40m per season for the chance to have tat all over the place !

“as long as the team is doing well on the pitch, thats all that matters”

I take it you didnt watch Monday nights game ?.

  38. just goes to show that something needs to be moaned about every day. pack it in and just support the team or create a business from nowt make millions and buy the club

  39. take the c and . out of the sign, and that sums ashley up=
    RECTOM.
    bb,what does that stand for?,BORING B*****D!!!!!!.

  40. For crying out loud why don’t you all get a life, it’s a bloody sign who cares. It’s more than likely photoshopped anyway even if it isnt so what its not the end of the world.

I swear that if Ashley invented the cure for cancer you lot would find a fault with it, “how are we going to get tickets for away games now that all these patients are being saved… the fat twat” would be your response no doubt.

Get over it, get on with your lifes and get behind the team no matter who owns it, it is still OUR club

  41. Lads / lasses – forgive me if someone has already posted this but i have it on good authority that we are changing to Nike next season so dont think the puma thing will happen but the rest if it seems pretty real !

  42. Im the KM who sent it in to .com… i was at a meeting at sjp yesterday and at 1130 it looked normal, then at 1pm it looked like that….. they had rigging on both sides so it looked at though it will be something along the lines suggested by steve wraith

    Thanks for that KM.

  44. NUFC337 – If I recall correctly, did’nt Ashley have to apply to the council for planning permission to put up this signaage (horrible shite that it is). I think the City Council need reminding that they have p****d off a few thousand voters!

  45. Fashley had to ask to put giant billboards around the ground not this advertising, why do people think he can’t do this when it’s his club. Out of all the things he’s done you lot are really complaining about this? Mind you I probably would if all I done was watch it on TV

  46. I don’t really care what he puts up on the roof, so long as we keep winning points on the pitch BUT it is a shame for those who have booked SJP for their wedding, complete with the wedding photos all taken from Level 3 directors area to have the iconic “Newcastle United” in the background – now they will have Sports Direct.com to remind them in their old age :-)

  47. just looked at this picture and couldn’t help but notice how apt the sign is i mean he has done a very good job of wrecking nufc i would pretty much say it is rect !!!

  48. No criticism !
    FFS, it’s only a sign !
    Get behind the team !
If you dont like it dont go to the games!
If you can’t say something positive……..
Ashley’s brought stability to the club….
We got a better and younger side this season, (dont forget cheaper) really ?
I liked the idea of 50% off signs on the players shirts, cant be any worse than whats already being advertsed, perhaps they could be changed for each game,(using velcro strips) things like specials on extra large ladies knickers, (black & white stripped of course) there’s no end to it if one uses a bit of imagination.
So get behind the club and our benevolent owner and all you negative a**holes, enough already, we only wanna hear positive sh*t, ok !

  49. thebronzedgod is a muppet. wait, i apologize to muppets all over the world for that. thebronzedgod is a mackem. there, fixed.

  50. Its just a new sign. It still say’s “Newcastle United” and thats the most important thing.
