One Chrissy Hughton?

One Chrissy Hughton?
One Chrissy Hughton?
Personally, I’m still buzzing from yesterday’s 5-1 demolition of derby day rivals Sunderland.

As results go they don’t get much better than that, but one thing I found that was a nice extra touch was the widespread backing for Chris Hughton that sounded out from the crowd on a number of occasions yesterday.

In a week where Hughton’s tenure as Newcastle boss had been called into question, mainly by the media, it seemed quite appropriate that the crowd united behind Hughton in front of a worldwide television audience. It was a proper ‘two-fingers’ to the press who have been trying to stir up some trouble where none had previously existed.

Chants of ‘One Chrissy Hughton’ and ‘Walking in a Hughton wonderland’ rang out from various parts of the ground yesterday, although I have no doubt that the media will try to paint us as fickle and suggest that we were only singing those songs as we were winning against our unwashed rivals from down the road.

The fact is that we know different. The controvrsial poll that Workyticket put up a week or so ago where he asked the question of whether or not Newcastle should sack Chris Hughton may have cause a stir on the ‘blog, but the results of the poll can’t be argued with.

The fact is that the vast majority of fans have always been behind Chris Hughton. Most fans recognise the job that he has done as our manager and realise that it is he who has helped to mould a team that has the best team-spirit that I have seen in black and white for a good number of years, possibly in my whole Toon supporting lifetime.

As for his supposed contract wrangle, I’ll guess we’ll have to wait and see on that one. One thing that can be made certain is that the Hughton detractors, including the “fans” who have access to the media, will have been sileneced by yesterday’s performance, and yes I am looking squarely at you Mr Malcolm Macdonald!

No doubt Supermac will try and wriggle out of what he said yesterday, and given the calibre of the man I wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to turn it around and claim that he was trying to fire the Newcastle players up for the game yeatserday.

If he does end up claiming something similar to that then he needs reminding that nobody of any real importance at the club, and by that I mean players and manager, really gives a toss what comes out of his motormouth.

Next up it is Arsenal away, and there is a very real chance that we will lose the game. Arsenal are Arsenal after all, and they are looking rather tasty at the minute. My main hope is that the toys don’t come back out of the pram again if we do lose next weekend.

Hughton deserves time. We have tried everything from big-time managers to superstar players, but the one thing we haven’t tried is giving people time.

Now there is an idea…..

  1. I know we shouldn’t get carried away by it all, but looking at the table now, if we’d only produced that kind of performance against Wigan, Stoke and Blackpool, as well as not being cheated out of the Man Shitty game, we couldve been sitting pretty at the top. Anyhoo, that’s all why fors

  2. F*** THE PRESS!
    FOREVER.
They haven’t got a clue what happens at NUFC, they are completely out of the loop.

    TOON TOON.

    Today’s task…
Root out a mackem & ram this win down their throat.
    :)

Anyhoo, that’s all why fors and what ifs. What I would really like to see, more than anything else, is for the crowd to show even half of the passion and support on display yesterday in all future home games. With a roar like that we’ll scare the shit out of the majority of visiting teams.

    HEAR, HEAR! :)

Chris Hughton deserves credit, a healthy transferkitty and better wages. And of course: he needs support from the players and the fans!

  5. Bugger! Thought id stopped that first post from going through. The perils of posting via mobile phone. But hey! At least I’m first.

  6. On thing that Mr Ashley should concern himself is that there will be other club chairmen who will be looking at CH and thinking uhhmmm there’s a bargain Manager to be had here. So the sooner Mr Ashley sorts it out the better.

  7. The thing that gets me, and I hoped it might have been cut out this season, but it hasn’t so far, is inconsistency.

I don’t think we played like world beaters yesterday, we just played to the best of our ability, and look what happened. Why isn’t it like that every game? We would be bloody second or something if we did!

Spot on re the atmosphere. The place was jumping yesterday and i bet it played a big part to boost the players and help them raise their game. It was like the Entertainers days with the crowd as loud as that. I bet it scared half the Sunderland team to death and if we could only recreate some of it for every home game who’s to say the players wouldn’t respond accordingly?

  9. ohh and has anyone noticed? We’re a quarter of the season in now, 14 points on the board, not bad I reckon, good points total to go for, 10-15 points every 10 games!

    HWTL

  10. What a bobby dazzler!!!!!

    5 fcucking 1 man.

    Unbelievable.

It seems wrong to single any one player out for special praise after such a magnificent team performance but Andy Carroll was immense.

He was practically unplayable and ripped huge gaping holes in their defence for others to exploit all day yesterday.

  11. anyone else think we should play the 2nd team against arse on sunday to keep players fresh for the more winnable games vs blackburn wed, and fulham sat? Don’t like to concede games but i think it would be smart to set up and aim for at least 4 points from the 3 games.

  12. Batty – like i said it was a magnificent all-round team performance – Barton included.

I just thought Andy Carroll destroyed their defence – they must have got home last night and thought to themselves “what the f**k was that”.

Ripped to pieces by an Avatar!!!

  14. aye barton is making the team tick – hard to take for sum like.

one joey barton there’s only one joey barton.

  15. I think the spiral of decline we suffered, culminating in our relegation, sucked all of the life out of SJP and we ended up with an atmosphere more akin to a morgue. The team at the time showed little backbone for a fight and that reflected strongly on the crowd. But now! Now we have a team that, while they may not be the most talented set of players to grace our pitch, at least have the team spirit and the stomache for a scrap. Surely that’s worth cheering? Surely that instills passion? We won’t win every game, but as long as we have a group of lads out on the pitch trying their best, then surely it’s up to us to try our best as well? Give these lads all the encouragement we can and I’m sure they’ll respond well to it. So, next home game, let’s shout ourselves bloody hoarse for the lads and make SJP every bit the fortress that it once was.

    Howay the lads!

  16. To paraphrase JFK, “Ask not what my club can do for me…)

Compare the atmosphere yesterday to the Wigan and Stoke games and you realise how much a large and noisy crowd can influence performances on the pitch. Newcastle were first for almost every ball yesterday and nobody shirked their responsibilities. Everyone played their part and it was a pleasure to see such commitment from 1 to 11 or 23 :)

So next two home games lets have more of the same (even if it is Blackburn and Fulham) and preferably full houses too :)

  17. BBB – I stopped readin the TF when it said;

“But most of all I’m delighted for Chris Hughton. Our understated, modest manager has been treated like shite by Ashley-Llambias this last week”

Really? And there was me thinking it was the press

  18. It’ll take more than some WUM with the personality of wet fart to kill my buzz, Toonsy – don’t you worry!!

While we’re on the subject tho – where’s all the Nolan haters??? ;)

  19. We should have a lame “Caption Contest” for that one :)

    I’ll start it with

    LC: You’re effing useless ref
MH: Maybe but at least I’m not a tw@t Makem

  20. yes barton was good as was carroll, nolan ect,but half of this good play could not happen if not for one thing imo a player you can trust, that lets other guys play and that man is a good d/m tiote is that man,how long have we waited for such a class player

  21. It all got a bit emotional in Level 7 when the whole crowd made a collective gesture and he clapped us all.

    Sorry, but I don’t agree

Every game is winnable. Arsenal were a little bit fortunate to beat West Ham 1-0 with a goal in the 88th minute. We are a much better team than West Ham, so who knows what might happen at the Emirates, if the lads show the skill and commitment and team spirit that they showed yesterday?

  23. Jersey Geordie – Whilst I advocated leaving certain players out in midweek, I wouldn’t like to see it in a a league game. It should be our best team for every league game in my opinion.

  24. We’re not going to win every match but it’s consistency of effort that will see us through.

  25. West Brom went to the Emirates and played Arsenal off the park fo 75 minutes. Have Faith anything is possible in this league just ask Citeh fans :)

  26. we will see a different toon team at the Emirates than what turned up at St James’ last week. I fancy us to come home with a point, CH will get his tactics right for that one. We gotta come out of the starting blocks at full speed, we cannot afford to allow Arsenal an early goal…

  27. AndyMac, I hope to God that story is pure crap. That really would be the worst thing to happen.

At this point, I’m actually very happy with how Ashley is running things and keeping us focused on stability, while still bringing in quality players like Tiote to the squad
