Awarded £1.5m costsKevin Keegan is to be awarded costs after winning the tribunal for constructive dismissal against Newcastle United.

1. Introduction
In paragraph 54 of our Award dated 1 October 2009, we identified a number of consequential issues the determination of which we postponed in order that the parties could provide us with written submissions on those issues. We have since received detailed written submissions from the parties and, in this Supplementary Award, we set out our determination on those issues.
2. Award
First, we conclude that there is no basis for altering our award of £2m plus interest in favour of Mr Keegan. Clause 14.8.1 of the Contract is not subject to mitigation, as the Club agreed at the hearing. It is subject only to Clause 14.8.5 which does not apply here since Mr Keegan is not employed by ESPN. Hughton unfazedChris Hughton is calm about the fact that Newcastle United have only taken 2 points out of the last 12 and went down to Scunthorpe last night.
Talking about last night’s game, Hughton said:
“The game plan was to come here and do well.
“On the balance of play and chances it’s a game we should have won, but we have to do better.
“They were able to turn us at times, they were always a threat and had a lot of energy in the side and at the clinical moments they got the goals.
“We didn’t defend moments well enough and that enabled them to get the goals that they did. On the balance of play it’s a game that we should have won.
“I think this is a pressure on us. We are a side in this division that everybody expects to do well and certainly our own supporters expect us to do well and that’s the pressure that we carry with us in every game. That’s a pressure that we’ve got to live with.”
Yes, that plus the pressure of working with a squad that’s down by 7 players on last season’s squad, which was itself already stretched. (more…)
Colo, we need you!!Uh-oh! Newcastle left Glanford Park with absolutely nothing tonight as Scunthorpe took all three points with a 2-1 win, and it would take a brave man to suggest the St James’ garden is rosy right now.
Despite having plenty of possession and creating a number of decent chances, Newcastle spurned several of them and were unable to prevent Scunthorpe scoring twice and that was all it took to swing this game the Iron’s way.
Due to work commitments, I was left to listen to the game on Radio Newcastle and the commentary of Mick Lowes and former assistant to Sir Bobby, John Carver. It didn’t sound great. Scunthorpe were backed by their biggest crowd in 21 years, and as with many teams this season, were obviously pumped up for this as they’re playing a relegated ‘big boy’ who are second in the league. But Newcastle appeared to have the better of the first quarter, although they couldn’t convert possession into goals.
Scunthorpe began to have the better of the play towards the end of the first half but the teams went into the break all square. Having missed a chance before the break, Woolford made no mistake after Khizanishvili was outpaced by Hooper, to make it 1-0. Hughton responded by swapping Geremi for Harewood but it was Kevin Nolan who equalised just after the hour, following what sounded like great build up play. (more…)
Making a fist of it in The Championship?‘The Iron’ awaits Newcastle United this evening, and no, not the dreaded domestic variety which partners an ironing board, but The Iron of sunny Scunny fame. Scunthorpe, built on one of the largest iron-ore fields in Europe, is home to one of the country’s major steelworks, and the link with iron provides Scunthorpe United with their nickname.
Scunthorpe have been up and down (the various divisions over the years) more than a tart’s knickers, from successful promotion to subsequent relegation the next season, and have yo-yo’d around between divisions one and three.
Moving from their previous home, the Old Showground, to the new purpose built Glanford Park in 1988 was a big step forward for the club. Currently one of the smallest grounds in the Championship with a capacity of 9088, away fans who normally have an allocation of 1678 tickets, are housed in the South stand. Previous high profile players Kevin Keegan and Ray Clemence, both played for Scunthorpe in the late 60’s before leaving for Liverpool.
The 90’s saw two Wembley play off visits for The Iron, and they must have enjoyed their trips to Wembley, which continued on into the last decade. Scunthorpe were League one champions 2006-07, before seeing a break in 2007 from Brian Laws wo had been with them for 10 years. (more…)
"It's time we woke up now"Following Newcastle United’s defeat at the hands of Forest on the weekend, Jose Enrique has been hitting out at the team’s lack of form.
Enrique said:
“It’s time that we woke up now.
“We have been top of the table, which is good, but we need to wake up because we haven’t been playing very well.
“We can’t think we’re in the Premier League – it’s not true.
“We’ve played only 12 games, and there are 34 games left.
“The team haven’t played very well in the last three games – we have two points from nine.”
True enough. We’ve got a game away at Scunthorpe tonight and then home to Doncaster on the weekend. We really should be winning these games against lower table opposition if we’re going to sustain our promotion push. (more…)
