Lovenkrands: A story of turmoil, tragedy and success.
Lovenkrands: A story of turmoil, tragedy and success.
The last in the series of our player reviews for the 09/10 season will take a look at our strikers and how they have done this season.

We have already worked our way through the team starting with goalkeepers before moving onto have a look at our defence and midfield. Our strikers have been very important for us this season and have combined to score over half of our goals this season, 47 of them in fact, and they have been spread pretty evenly between the various front men. For the first half of the season we spent our time playing mainly one striker with Kevin Nolan in an attcking support role, something that has probably helped Nolan score so many goals whilst limiting the chance of any strikers hitting the 20 goal mark. Still, it’s a team game as the saying goes, and as long as the ball is hitting the back of the net I don’t really care which player scores them. Let’s take a look anyway. (more…)

Newcastle United player review 09/10 – Midfielders.

Has been a key player for us.
Has been a key player for us.
Having already taken a look at our goalkeepers and defenders, the focus for the next edition of our player review moves up the pitch again to see how our midfield have performed throughout the season.

It’s been a strange position for us this year. On one hand, some say the midfield has been our achilles heel, it lacks mobility and creativity. On the other hand though, it has been a position that has yielded a return of 30 goals from the season. Without checking, that is probably a damn sight more than what we have had in return from the past few seasons. Of course 17 of them have come from Kevin Nolan which has helped improve that figure, but despite the criticism that has been aimed at them from time to time they have chipped in with their fair share of assists aswell. After all, strikers need service from somewhere, right? (more…)

Has been Fab-ulous this season!
Has been Fab-ulous this season!
Here I continue with the second of four installments of my player reviews for the title winning season just gone.

Last time out we had at look at how our goalkeepers had been getting on throughout the season, which was pretty easy by all accounts as there isn’t that many of them. Now we step up the difficulty and broaden our review to feature our whole defence and look at how they have performed this season. The back four has been a very strong area for us this season, a strange thing for a Newcastle fan to say following year after year of shabby backlines that nobody really seemed to be able to sort out. Granted we may have been playing against weaker opposition, but we have come out on top of them, miles on top in fact and we head to the Premier League with best defensive record in The Championship safely in the bag. I know we have had loan players in the shape of Patrick van Aanholt, Fitz Hall and Zhurab Khizanishvilli but I am going to discount them for this as they aren’t technically our players and only really played a handful of games for us. Harper: Waited long enough for his chance!
Harper: Waited long enough for his chance!
Here we go with the first in a series of player reviews for the season just passed. Rather than an individual write up for each player I thought it would give us more to discuss and work through if I reviewed the team by on-field position.

That of course means our player review for the season 09/10 will feature four editions; Goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and strikers. So in true football cliche style, let’s build from the back and start off between the sticks with a review of our goalkeepers and how they have done this season.

It does appear to have been an area where we have been blessed with quality for a good few years now, and with top quality rising through the ranks at St James’ Park it looks likely to remain one of our strongest positions for some years to come. For many years we had Shay Given, a brilliant keeper and widely regarded as one of the best in the Premier League throughout his time with us. In January 2009, Shay moved on to Manchester City where of course we wish him all the best, apart from against us next season. Whilst losing Shay was a blow, most of us knew we had a good backup ‘keeper in the form of the forgotten man of Newcastle United. (more…)

Which one would you choose as 'Player of the Year'?
Which one would you choose as 'Player of the Year'?
With the news that Newcastle United’s Kevin Nolan has been voted as the Championship’s ‘Player of the Season’, and as the season enters it’s final straight, it’s time here on NUFC ‘Blog to decide who YOU think has been Newcastle United’s first team player of the season.

For the poll below, we have only chosen players who have made ten or more appearences in the first team, either as a starter or a sub in all competitions, so very new members of the squad such as Mike Williamson, Fitz Hall, Wayne Routledge etc, good though they’ve been so far, have just missed out, as have some of the younger members of the squad who have made the odd cameo appearence. In total, this makes a total of 18 players to choose from. (more…)
