If you can't say WHEYAYE, you're not coming in!Those Keegan years seem a long time ago, don’t they? The days when we were everybody’s second team, when The Entertainers indirectly earned Sky a fortune as punters flocked to subscribe. When people admired and respected us and the North East was regarded highly as a region and so too were we as a group of canny, devout football followers. A bit daft maybe but ultimately a loyal, passionate and decent bunch of merry black and white-clad, funny talking hopefuls.
But on current form it seems the club is a long-running circus and we the fans are the biggest joke on the stage. Yet also disliked for our arrogance and a perceived lack of grace and humility. Oh for the days when we were proud!
Mind you, how much of a stuff do we really give about what people think? I mean seriously though? (more…)
Scene 1: Rome 44B.C. Julius Caesar was fighting off an attack by a murderous group of Senators – “Et tu, Bruté?” (meaning “and you Brutus?”) were the words uttered by Caesar to his closest friend Marcus Brutus – when Caesar saw that he too was involved with the murderous group. Caesar lost his will to fight back on seeing the betrayal and allowed the Mob to cut him and kill him. It was the ultimate betrayal by a man who Caesar had loved as a brother.
Scene 2: Newcastle 2007
Mike Ashley buys Newcastle and appoints Dennis Wise as a club Director: (more…)
Kevin Keegan: Geordie "messiah"? So recent rumours inform us that the front-runner to take over the reigns at Newcastle is a local consortium. Which brings us to an interesting question – is that what all Newcastle fans desire? Do we believe that the only people who could understand us sufficiently to be in a position to manage us effectively, would need to be ‘one of us’?
If you listen to the media, experts and opposing fans (even the odd NUFC fan) then it would seem that it’s exactly what we need. The premise being, however, not that they agree we are a unique club and a special brand of supporter but rather that we are somewhat insular, over-expectant and delusional (the word has lost all meaning it’s used that much). These tendencies thus leading to our downfall in times of trouble, when we become distrustful of the ‘outsiders’ in charge at our club. At which point we drive them out with pitchforks and banners. Apparently, we love our local ‘messiahs’ and collectively we are our own worst enemy. Of course the myth is so much easier to pedal when you ignore the fact that the main protagonist in the argument, Keegan, was born in Doncaster. Minor details though. (more…)
Bobby Robson: Messiah? Or very naughty boy? As NUFC fans we are living in tumultuous times. The club is a mess from top to bottom, the fans are in disarray and we are about to start our first season outside top flight football for 16 years.
Here, I will attempt to disseminate all the chaos that is surrounding the club and show you the exact point where it all went wrong and the one single person who is to blame for all this. Although the tabloid style headline may give you a clue as to where I’m going with this, please, keep reading you might be surprised.
First of all let me take you back to 1992. Suede were playing at the Riverside, A second laser tattoo removal ward opened at the Freeman hospital and in February of that year a certain Osvaldo Ardiles was still manager of Newcastle United Football Club. Before the end of February he would be replaced by a Mr. Kevin Keegan. At the time I remember being more shocked than elated. Here was Keegan, a footballer I’d admired when he played with FC Hamburg, a legend at St James Park and the person who allowed me to see a helicopter up close for the first time ever, coming to manage my football club. Along with Sir John Hall now firmly on board nothing could go wrong. We were saved!
By the end of March Keegan had walked out. Bugger. (more…)
