Chris Hughton post match interview.

Post match interviews from Chris Hughton and Blackpool manager, Ian Holloway, following The Magpies’ desperately disappointing 0-2 home defeat to the Tangerines earlier today.

At this point I was going to work in some joke about us being ‘Tango’d’ or somesuch, but it looks like Toonsy got there first in his match report. Let’s hope we have more luck against the Toffees next time! (more…)

Hughton: On the sniff despite what the press say.
Hughton: On the sniff despite what the press say.
Toon managerial maestro, Chris Hughton, has been looking forward to Newcastle United’s return to the Premiership, and keeping an eye out for new players so it seems. In an interview for Newcastle’s Chronic, he spoke of the need for selective reinforcements, though reiterating that feels he already has the nucleus of a squad which could succeed at the highest level. He began on the need for continuity, saying:

“One thing we need to keep is the spirit and enthusiasm we had last season. That, for me, is one of the most important things.”

Although members of the press have kindly informed Hughton that he will have no money whatsoever to spend on new players, Newcastle’s deluded manager insisted that he has been out trawling for new faces at the club. On this he added: (more…)

Butt in action, but for how much longer?
Butt in action, but for how much longer?
Newcastle United manager, Chris Hughton, speaking in an interview, has given a very strong hint that this may be Nicky Butt’s last season at Newcastle, and that he may be retiring from the playing altogether as our spell in the Championship reaches it’s close.

Hughton said of Butt:

“If I look at the period of time I’ve been here, Nicky has been a wonderful ambassador,”

“I knew of him before, of course, and his achievements at United when he was one of that group of young quality players.

“What I’ve seen of him in my time here is exactly that – someone with the grandeur he had at United. (more…)

Nasty Nigel’s Derby Ram a timely reminder up Magpies!

Still a baby-faced assassin?
Still a baby-faced assassin?
The predictable platitudes are already forthcoming from within, as Chris Hughton seeks to demonstrate how hurt Newcastle players were by last night’s heavy defeat to Derby County. Despite being denied an apparently legitimate goal in the second half and with some dubious decision from the officials, Hughton refused to blame anyone but the collective in black and white.

Having watched Derby categorically destory our impressive record-breaking unbeaten run in the league, supporters were given a reminder that the Cardiff demolition was perhaps a distraction from the otherwise inauspicious form leading into and out of the Christmas period.

However, Hughton was keen to point out that the results perhaps flattered the hosts, saying:

“It’s a very hurt changing room. The manner of the defeat has hurt them and I’m quite sure there’ll be a desire to turn this around.”

“It’s certainly a big blow. We’ve done something that we haven’t done all season and that’s concede three goals. If you do that then there’s a good chance you’ll lose football matches.” (more…)

Williamson Toon transfer finalised with 3.5 year contract.

Mike Williamson: Transfer completed.
Mike Williamson: Transfer completed.
Newcastle United have finally reached an agreement with Portsmouth, and possibly, Watford, in the complex maze that has been the Mike Willamson transfer kerfuffle.

After a complex ‘menage a trois’ involving Portsmouth, the Toon and Watford, a completed medical and personal terms agreement, the 26 year old centre back is now finally a Toon player.

Mike has signed a 3.5 year contract for an undisclosed fee, and with Danny Simpson and Steven Taylor injured, and Ryan Taylor suspended for a straight red card, this will of course provide some much neeeded defensive support in the next few games. As to how much of a deciding factor this was in the negotiations would be a matter of speculation.

Speaking on the big transfer scoop, manager, Chris Hughton said:

“He’s a big lad.

“He’s a lad of the right age where’s I think there’s still a bit of development in him. (more…)
