"Spend, spend spend" says Shearer. Writing in his column for the Sun, Alan Shearer has laid the blame squarely at the door of Mike Ashley for the Newcastle United’s current lack of form.
“Newcastle missed a huge opportunity in the summer” he began, continuing:
“Having punched above their weight last season and almost made it into the top four [sic], this was the time to spend. The club was up and running again after so many years mired in uncertainty. There was once again a feel-good factor and even Mike Ashley was enjoying it. But he needed to put his hand in his pocket and strengthen with two or three quality players. The best time to buy is when you are in a position of strength.”
Which is fair enough, especially the last sentence which is very true. “Momentum” is vital in football, something which the ex Toon hitman acknowledged himself when he continued later in the piece:
“Sadly the momentum built up by Alan Pardew last season has been lost and Saturday (Newcastle’s 1-3 defeat to Man City) was a stark example of that.”(more…)

Hello, good afternoon and welcome to our “match banter” feature for this afyternoon’s game between Newcastle United and Premier League champions, Manchester City.
With a tough series of games coming up over the Christmas period, the Magpies will be hoping to get off to a good start against the “Citizens.” Whoever the opposition, Newcastle United need some more points, and they need them soon with only one solitary win amongst five losses in our last six games. Against such daunting opposition, even a draw would be welcome this afternoon, with hopes pinned on three points against our next opponents, Queens Park Rangers. Just what we need right now!Venue: St James’ Park, Newcastle. Date: Sat 15th December, 2012. Kick off: 12.45pm. Referee: Andre Marriner (W.Mids). UK TV: Sky Sports 2.
Newcastle United’s Christmas of horror begins with a visit from last season’s Premier League champions, and the only club whose name sounds like a Gay night at Rockshots, Man City.
As you may have noticed, our run of games over the Christmas period could be a nasty business. Following this one, we have what should be a bit if respite with another home game against troubled Queens Park Rangers, though it wouldn’t surprise me if their fightback under new manager, ‘Arry Redknapp, started against us. Then it’s the other Manchester away followed with a trip down to my neck of the woods, North London, to face Arsenal. Finally, for the first game of the new year, we have the not to be sniffed at Everton. The word is that Derek Llambias has a collection of out of work managers including Big Ron and Jim “Bald Eagle” Smith on speed dial in case it all goes “tits up” for our current Silver Supremo over the holiday period. Llambias might also go down the ex NUFC legend road tried before with Keegan and Shearer as Malcolm ‘Supermac’ MacDonald is no longer otherwise engaged since the “Legends” show was axed.
