Pardew’s policy on the bairns

March 9th, 2011 | 51 Comments |

Phil Airey, Newcastle.
Toon future maybe.
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew talks about his philosophy on the bairns.

I like discussions about the youngsters and tried recently to get you all interested in it via that Italian tournament. Which you all promptly ignored!

Anyway, let’s begin with what Pardew said:

I think that depends on the results.

We’ve still got a bit of work to do, to make sure we’re safe and we want to finish as high as we can.

But I won’t hesitate with Ferguson like I did at the start of the Everton game, because I can see he will be very buoyed by his performance for us.

That’s good for us moving forward and it might even be good in terms of the next game, because if José doesn’t make it, he will definitely come into contention for starting the game. (more…)

Carroll ain’t a Geordie

Turncoat
Well, whatever
Andy Carroll thinks Liverpool is brilliant Then again he’s only been there 5 minutes..

This is short, simple and on topic.

Carrol said:

It was great to get out there and the result made it even better.

I was on the bench and itching to get on right from the kick-off really but I’ve started now and can’t wait for the next game.

When I was running back (after being called for a substitution by Dalglish) all the fans were shouting and screaming and so I got a little bit excited.

I was over the moon to get on there and get back playing.

The support was unbelievable for me.

The fans have been great since I signed and even when I was warming up, they were fantastic.

It was an incredible atmosphere, definitely one of the best I’ve ever experienced.

Like I give a sh.. , erm, hoot.

Go easy on me over the imflamatory headline. Just letting off steam.

Hey, look, no rambling!

Injury updates re Joey and Ireland and a bit of transfer speculation

March 8th, 2011 | 4 Comments |

Not coming to the Toon IMHO
Jermainne Lens? Nah!
Some injury news about Joey and Stephen Ireland. A complete lack of injury news about Jonas. Oh, and more transfer speculation.

There isn’t a huge amount of news around this morning and I can’t do my thinking posts until I’ve had least 2 meals, so I thought I’d sum up bits of this and that

There’s good and bad news on the injury front.

Joey and Stephen Ireland look good for Stoke but Jose seems to be a doubt. Pardew said:

Ireland trained Thursday, and looked like he was going to be OK, and then got the thigh injury which kept him out of training on Friday.

Joey actually trained Friday thinking that he’d be OK, but again didn’t feel quite right.

I don’t think there’ll be a problem for Joey and Stephen against Stoke.

We’ll wait and see with Jose. He’s a key player for us, and that injury affected us more than any other one.

I know Joey’s had issues in the past and we’ve sometimes given him some grief, but two names I like to see on the team sheet are Barton and Tiote. It kind of gives me that extra boost of confidence as we go into a game. (more…)

Newcastle are a mid-table team

People are starting to think Newcastle United might be of European quality, but what’s the reality?

Realistically, are we European candidates?

I ask because there’s enthusiasm in some quarters that maybe we might have a shot at Europe.

In my opinion our best match this season was away at Birmingham and yet when I was up in the Toon for the Spurs game it was just as if something didn’t quite click.

Clint wrote an excellent post on this a while back about being cautious in our ambitions

I think we’re a mid-table team this season and I will not get my hopes up beyond that.

I do think there’s potential there though. Assuming Ashley doesn’t sell everyone, I think we have the makings of a good squad.

There’s such a lot of speculation as to who will stay and who will go, but I think Tiote, Colo, Ben Arfa and Barton are the ‘core’ to build on. I’m not so sure about our front line but I don’t want you all to moan at me, so I’ll leave it at that.

Incidentally, as regular readers will know I’m an accident waiting to happen. I kid you not when I say I knocked myself out with a broken chair. Just kind of leant back and the next thing I knew I had a massive bump on my head. I expect sympathy in droves!

Apologies for my short posts today. Loads of work to do.

Pardew re Nile: “He’s always on the cusp of being late”

Nile Ranger
Doesn't bode well.
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew’s comments about Nile Range don’t make very good reading.

There is very little news about Newcastle today beyond our dismal defeat at the hands of Everton.

However, I did pick up on some comments about Nile Ranger from Pardew:

We see him day-in and day-out, and I said from day one he needs to sort himself out as a professional footballer.

He’s always on the cusp of being late – we’ve stopped him from being late but he’s always on the cusp. We’ve only improved him five per cent on that factor.

If we had improved him to 50% and he was here early and preparing himself – and the other players see him preparing himself – and when he trains he’s here on time to warm up and he’s doing the right things, then the other players will start to buy into him.

At the moment the other players are looking at him and thinking ‘You’re a young boy, you need to learn’. And he does. And that is reflected in his game.

He’s had big opportunities for us, but to be fair they are opportunities he’s created for himself. And that is the point – he has got talent. We’ve got to just try and eke it out of him . . . it’s not going to be overnight, but it’s coming. He’s getting better.(more…)
