Pardew: “we are very much on the case of players”

March 5th, 2011 | 20 Comments |

Alan Pardew, Newcastle manager
Gimme the dosh
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is planning to spend to strenghten the squad in the summer.

My cat will be the death of me. Yesterday he threw up by the side of the bed, which forced me to kind of dance around it, thus jolting my bad knee and putting me in agony all day. And this morning I jolted my knee again because of the cat. It was dark when I got up and the cat is black, and for nefarious reasons he was asleep halfway up the stairs, so I trod on him and we both howled as I tried to dance around him again.

But will he do anything useful like rid me of a rat at the bottom of the garden? Not a chance.

Anyway, if you remember I put up a post a few days ago about Keegan saying that Pardew would not see any of the money we got fot Carroll. Pardew has however come out to counter that, saying:

We have sat down and discussed briefly what the plans are, of course. It’s very important to have a strategic plan of what you are doing.

We don’t want to be doing everything at the last minute – although like all transfer windows, you have to be patient because sometimes there are six or seven teams involved around one player who is available, and then they fall away. (more…)

Newcastle sued over Nolan’s tackle

Kevin Nolan, Newcastle United
Sued for 6 figure sum
Newcastle United settled with a six figure sum over Nolan’s tackle on Everton’s Victor Anichebe.

Newcastle United were sued by Everton’s Victor Anichebe over a Kevin Nolan tackle in February 2009.

To be honest I don’t remember the tackle because I have a memory like a sieve and can barely remember what I did five minutes ago, but apparently a ‘six figure sum’ was settled upon for lost earnings.

Apparently the player was on a highly-incentivised contract and his legal team argued he had lost out on a substantial sum of appearance bonuses that he would have earned had he remained fit.

My point, though, is does this happen regularly? As I said, my ill-fated memory does not work very well but I can’t remember one player suing another for a tackle before.

Why, for example, have we not sued Manchester City for Nigel De Jong’s tackle on Ben Arfa? (more…)

Prediction competition – week 2

March 3rd, 2011 | 13 Comments |

NUFCBlog.org prediction competition
Gan on!
Predictions can now be made for week 2 of the NUFCBlog.org Premier League prediction competition.

Now look, I know the prize money is only £25 at the end of the season, but £25 can be the difference between a night with the woman of your dreams and a fish from the the mountain streams, if you know what I mean (and I’m sure you do).

It’s only week two and just because some clever clogs has 11 points it doesn’t mean you can’t catch up. I have only 1 point and I still live in hope, although not much.

We have 17 entrants and I want 20 to make it worthwhile considering this competition for next season, so please click on the Prediction Competition menu item if you’re tough enough.

Simples! (more…)

What are Ashley’s summer spending plans?

Mike Ashley, Newcastle owner who will prove himself in the summer
Your move Mike
The debate goes on about what Newcastle United Owner Mike Ashley will spend in the summer, but we really won’t know until then. Bobby Moncur counters Keegan’s recent statement as ‘ill-advised’ and is – like me – in the ‘wait and see’ camp.

Kevin Keegan recently came out and said that Alan Pardew would see nowt of the £35m the club got for Andy Carroll and he may yet be right.

But other Newcastle ‘legends’, such as Bobby Moncur, have come down on the other side of the argument, guessing that Ashley might get his wallet out for more than a swift ‘all on red’ bet at the casino.

Just a tangent for a second (although one relevant to Newcastle for a change), but I walked into a bar earlier in the week. Hang on, that sounds like a joke: did I say ‘ouch’, meet a talking dog or a man with a large green head? No, actually, what I meant to say was I went to the pub on Monday for a meeting with my local village cricket club (rebels all, terrorists to a man) and met a new chap wanting to join the club who claimed to be a batsman and a Blackburn supporter. Amortisation and how it affects a football club’s profit figures

March 2nd, 2011 | 179 Comments |

Loads of financial nonsense to give you a headache
Ouch - me head hurts!
Much recent discussion about Newcastle United’s profits and/or losses in the transfer market has convinced one writer that a tedious post about amortisation is necessary.

I’ve noticed discussions in the comments on this ‘blog lately about players sold v players bought and the profit or loss that club makes as a result.

If, however, you try to tally this up with club accounts you have to bear in mind something called amortisation, which distorts things a bit.

I’ll demonstrate how it does so in possibly to most boring ‘blog article ever written.

Let’s say we buy a player for £12m in 2011 and he goes up in value playing for Newcastle (of course) and we sell him one year down the line for £24m. Without amortisation, it’s simple: we’d just record -£12m in 2011 and +£24m in 2012 against that player, giving us an over all profit on that player of £12m:

2011 2012 Profit On Player
(£12m) £24m £12m

However, in the real world – at least the one inhabited by accountants – it doesn’t work like that because of amortisation. If a player has signed a two year contract and is sold after one year, he is valued by his amortised book value, not by how much he cost in the first place. (more…)
