Cabaye, Cisse and Tiote: Three of NUFC's five signatories.62 players from 37 clubs around the world have called on UEFA chief Michel Platini to strip Israel of their right to host the UEFA Under-21 European Championship in solidarity with the people of Gaza after the recent killings by Israel of over 100 Palestinians in the Gaza strip.
Of the 62, five Newcastle United players, as well as one ex-Newcastle United player (Leon Best), have been signatories to the statement condemning the slaughter. This is the second highest contingent of players on the list after French club, Olympique de Marseille (though there was no Joey Barton on the list). The Newcastle United signatories to the statement are Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye, Papiss Cissé, Sylvain Marveaux and finally, Cheikh Tioté. Strangely though, there is no Hatem Ben Arfa there.
The full statement, along with the list of 62 signatories and their clubs is below:
“We, as European football players, express our solidarity with the people of Gaza who are living under siege and denied basic human dignity and freedom. The latest Israeli bombardment of Gaza, resulting in the death of over a hundred civilians, was yet another stain on the world’s conscience.(more…)
Toon travel to the land of the giants.Venue: Britannia Stadium, Stoke. Date: 28 November 2012. Kick off: 7:45pm. Referee: Howard Webb. UK TV: None.
Hello, good evening and welcome to our “match banter” feature for this evening’s game, which sees Newcastle United facing the biggest, roughest, toughest, meanest hombres in the whole of the Premier League, the “Potters” of Stoke City.
Ti say that we need a win would be an understatement, with our last one in any competition coming exactly a month ago, a 2-1 demolition of West Bromwich Albion. The winning goal in that one came off Papiss Cisse’s backside in the last minute of injury time, and we may need that kind of luck this evening as no one else has managed to break the Potters at their Britannia Stadium home in the last 13 attempts. Stoke City - Big lads and long balls.Venue: Britannia Stadium, Stoke. Date: 28 November 2012. Kick off: 7:45pm. Referee: Howard Webb. UK TV: None.
This evening’s game will see Newcastle United seek to avoid their fourth defeat in a row against the Premiership’s tallest side, Stoke City, who are unbeaten in their last 13 games at the Britannia Stadium.
None of their recent games could be described as emphatic victories, with their biggest being a 2-0 defeat of Swansea at the end of last month. However, Alan Pardew needs a win more than at any time since he took over as manager in December 2010, and getting one against Stoke in their own back yard could prove to be a difficult propositon. The Magpies current injury situation hardly helps either, with no less than eight players on the treatment table. You can see all the details of the carnage amongst the mangled Magpies on the team news and squad section below.
So, moving on, lets take a more in depth look at recent form, as well as our previous results against the Potters at their home, the Brittania Stadium.

Another disappointing home defeat for the Magpies as they were sunk by two goals, with Swansea’s leading goalscorer Michu getting his seventh of the season in the 58th minute. A disastrous sliced clearence from Tim Krul in the Newcastle goal fell to the Swans’ Spanish international winger Pablo Hernandez, who then proceeded to bang in an excellent cross straight on to the head of his fellow Spaniard, who headed powerfully past the hapless flying Dutchman. Simpson: Alot on his mind at the moment.Whilst we don’t usually get involved with tabloid WAG tittle tattle here on NUFC Blog, an interesting tit-bit has come to my attention in the ongoing tabloid drama between Danny Simpson, his old flame Stephanie, and his new flame, that Tulisa woman from that awful “N-Dubz”, and also that awful “X-Factor” thing.
According to the Stun, Stephanie (25) spoke on the Toon right back’s reaction when he found out the she was pregnant with the couple’s second child, sobbing:
“I found out I was pregnant a fortnight ago and he wasn’t very happy.”
Then, in news which may be of more interest to Newcastle United fans, she continued, claiming that the frisky full back said:
“I haven’t got a club — they’re not renewing my contract in May — how are we going to afford another baby?”
